Every single day, I refresh Twitter, I read blog posts, I check Facebook. More often than not, I’m seeing opinions. Every so often, they’re right, or perhaps based in some fact. But typically, they’re hyperbolic, highly emotional, and often wrong. But that’s OK. Because the Internet has largely become a forum where much of the respectability behind the idea of emoting has fallen by the wayside. Has it created an echo chamber of noise and nonsense? Yes. Absolutely. And who knows how to undo that? But ultimately, there’s been an unwritten agreement that it’s better to have the ability to say whatever you want than needing to be screened and pre-approved in order to speak.
And because of that, Beyoncé can sing one of the more important gospel songs ever created, on music’s biggest night, and you can criticize her for having the gall to do that. Are you in the right? Of course not. But you have every right to say that, because it’s your opinion.
Somehow, this act — this right — of supporting whomever and denouncing whomever, doesn’t extend to Kanye West. Because when he does it, it’s obnoxious — even though we turn around and do the same thing, day in and day out.
One positive thing to come out of the Kanye/Beck arguments was that it was pointed out how Kanye is a Beck fan and I had either forgot or never realized that he gives him a little shout out in an old song:
From "Get 'em High":
I thought that was cool. Anyway.....I hope Beck and Kanye work together on some music.
He's obviously not a fan. He basically he's not creative or talented. That was the biggest bullshit of it all. Fine, you think your friend Beyoncé should have won. You didn't have to insult the very talented person that did win
lol. He said he loves Beck.
As TMZ reports, West clarified his comments upon arriving in New York City on Monday. After being asked by a reporter if he intended to imply that Beck wasn't an "artist," the rapper said, "I wasn't saying Beck; I said the Grammys. Beck knows that Beyoncé should have won; you know that." When asked if he had even heard of Beck "before yesterday," West added, "Come on, man. I love Beck! But he didn't have the Album of the Year."

He's probably right, Beyonce should have won. And the Grammys, and the RIAA, for all the money they make from Beyonce, Jay-Z, Kanye, etc, have never displayed any willingness to award any people of color from the current generation any significant awards. The last two contemporary African American acts to win Album of the Year were Outkast and Lauryn Hill. Seal was the last black artist to win Record of the Year. Seal.
It isn't a stretch for me to imagine that Kanye meant something to the extent of "Why should we as people of color care about awards we can't win?"
Why is anyone surprised by anything Kanye does? Especially the haters? Just like last summer, why was anyone surprised by how things went on the farm? I, for the world, cannot understand that. You don't have to like him, that's fine. There are a lot of bands/musicians I do not like. But how the hell can you keep complaining about him, when honestly, he is true to himself? Truer to himself than a lot of people performing nowadays. He says what he thinks. Yes, maybe you want him to have a filter or something, but just because you want him to doesn't mean he has to be what you want him to be.
Annie Lennox, brilliant. Made Hozier look like a piker. When a 60 year old out performs you, you should sit down.
The Annie Lennox/Hozier collaboration was my favorite of the night. I would expect a seasoned performer to outperform the new kid on the block. I thought he gave proper deference towards her during the performance. You could tell he was beyond excited to be on that stage, with her, at that moment. I can't wait to see him at the Ryman.
I'll stay on the hater side of the fence with this one. The guy effectively uses the guitar as a prop and has a manager that has either watched talent buyers murder someone or has blow them all, with enthusiasm. 1 album, 1 single, and that single may sound good but it's likely like a Mike Hard Lemonade... one is ok, 10 would likely kill you.

As an aside, I can attest that one can, in fact, survive ten (and even 16) Mike's Hard Lemonades. I do not recommend it at all however.

I. Just. Don't. Understand.
I don't believe that anyone is surprised by what he does. It's pretty much expected that he's going to do something to put all of the attention on him. Make no mistake, this is not about Beyoncé or anything else. This is all about Kanye. The people that don't like him and the things he does should probably just ignore it and he would go away. We are giving him the attention that he craves. But as long as he keeps making an ass of himself and people keep defending him, we are going to continue to speak out against it. We have that right as much as he has the right to do the things he does.

Bravo. Kanye's on the run now. Who is your coalition's next target?

Like I've said a number of times before, I don't like the person Kanye is, but his music speaks for itself. Ever since high school when College Dropout came out: "I woke up early this mornin' with a new state of mind, a creative way to rhyme without usin' nines and guns, Keep your nose out the sky, keep your heart to [god], And keep your face to the risin' sun"

Time heals all wounds, and perhaps that’s no more evident in the budding relationship between Kanye West and Taylor Swift. Six years after West infamously interrupted Swift on stage during the VMAs, the two were seen posing for pictures at the Grammys last weekend. Now, in a radio interview with Ryan Seacrest, West reveals that he and Swift plan to hit the studio together in the near future.
West also discussed the Grammys and his controversial stance that Beck should have given his Album of the Year award to Beyonce. “Beck is one of the nicest guys and one of the most respected musicians in the game,” Kanye explained, but “the Grammys are artists’ Super Bowl, and somebody’s gotta be mad that Marshawn didn’t get the ball” (referencing the Seattle Seahawks decision to not give the ball to their star running back Marshawn Lynch during the final play of the Super Bowl).
“When I said that thing about respect artistry, I think it came off the wrong way and that was a mis-wording on my part,” he added.

He's still wrong. Pretty much everyone can agree that Marshawn should have got the ball. You give to your beast rb when you're on the goal line. It's debatable whether Beyoncé deserved that award. Even if you believe she did deserve it, Beck didn't deserve to be disrespected like that.

I'm just glad he came forward and said he mis-worded the artistry part. that was the only part that really bothered me.

Maybe that's why Kanye is saying this stuff and clarifying his comments? Because he thinks Beck is "a nice guy" and "one of the most respected musicians in the game?" Do you even read shit before you comment on it?
Edit: the full quote says "there is nothing I would want to do as a musician to disrespect him in any way"
But yeah, Beyonce's album was an overwhelming critical and commercial success. It's "debatable" whether she deserved it.

Kanye West is an opinionated fella and he definitely does some douchey things but I think one of his major problems is not being able to express his thoughts coherently when in interviews or being quoted in soundbytes. He says very exaggerated things and stuff that rubs people the wrong way but he really just has an issue of putting his foot in his mouth. Since the Grammy quotes he's said multiple times he loves Beck and thinks Beck is great and all that. He just got too excited when trying to explain himself.
Seeing him live on the Yeezus tour and having him explain (in a long monologue that I wouldn't necessarily call a rant) the whole thing about designing sneakers and bitching about Nike and why he wants to be seen as more than just a musician made so much more sense than anything I could have read in an article/interview.
I'm not denying he can be a dick or say/do dick-ish things. But a lot of "the best" artists have had their negative sides.

No, I read it. I get that he's backtracking a bit now. Maybe he should have just kept his mouth shut in the first place? If he learned to do that, people wouldn't have a problem with him. But like I said before, his comments are more about Kanye than Beyoncé. He knows when he says shit like that he gets attention and that's all he wants. Even when he attempts to clarify what he said, he compares it to Marshawn not getting the ball. It's just not that clear cut, it's a bad comparison.

Or maybe you have no right to judge what a man can or cannot say? Although he's a celebrity he's still a person with his own views and can express them however the fuck he pleases. All over the Internet its "if he wouldnt have said something I dislike them maybe I wouldn't hate him." He clearly doesn't give a shit about what most people have to say about him.

It's just funny to me that people are offended by what Kanye said about a guy meanwhile the guy Kanye said it about isn't offended, thinks he's a genius, and considers Kanye an inspiration.

I also think Kanye has a weird relationship with Beyonce. Not in the sexual sense, but in the maternal. She's been making acclaimed pop music since the 90s so he obviously respects her creatively and thinks she still doesn't get her due. And if Jay-Z is Kanye's musical mentor/brother/father, Beyonce is the big sister/mother. And considering Kanye's relationship with his own mother, it makes sense that he would jump to Beyonce's defense whenever it feels shes been slighted.
Is there anyone else who supports Kanye in his action but feels that Beck's album was better than Beyonce's?
I thought Kanye's joke where he pretended to go up and then had second thoughts and shook his head and said "Nah" then left was funny.
I liked Beck's album more but I'm not a big fan of Beyonce's music. I thought her album was good (I actually listened to it now!) but it's just not for me. I also didn't listen to some of the other nominees. Was very surprised but pleased Beck got that award.
Kanye's comments after the Grammy's at a press conference rubbed me the wrong way since it seemed like he was talking shit about Beck but he clarified those comments and complimented Beck so I'm all good now.

yes.
I like beck's album better, but agree that people can have opinions. while I'm totally biased (obviously) in my feelings toward beyonce, I still would not have been surprised whatsoever if she would have walked away with it.
according to my last.fm account, morning phase is my 5th-most listened to album from the last 12 months. I'm super biased on my preferences.
