Meters probably would have been optimum, but at least Lettuce isn't going to suck. They were great on Friday, and they are playing again on Thurs with Soullive. You coming in tomorrow? I'm dying the way Oak Street Block Party schedule worked out since I have to work. Kung Fu, Sonic Bloom and The Heard are all early afternoon. I'm already off Thurs and Fri so I'm going to have to lump it. If I can get down there for Leftover Salmon, that would be tight. I might try to get to Kung Fu plays Steely Dan's The Royal Scam tomorrow night.

Looks like I'm blowing out around 3:00ish, so I'm going to pick up one of my kids and head to Leftover and get something to eat on Oak, then either going back home for a while or heading to Kung Fu plays Steely Dan depending on timing and such (probably end up going home for an hour or two).
Unofficial but sometimes reliable word on Zappa Plays Zappa, is that he's doing One Size Fits All. I didn't look at recent setlists, and I haven't seen anything else confirming or denying. That 72-78 era is my favorite Zappa era. Later, I liked the the Joe's Gargages, Shut Up and Play Yer Guitar albums and certainly Jazz From Hell was great and Man from Utopia. But the 72-78 run of: Waka/Jawaka > the Grand Wazoo > Over-Nite Sensation > Apostrophe > One Size Fits All > Bongo Fury > Zoot Alures > Studio Tan > Sleep Dirt > Sheik Yerbouti is the absolute shit!

So Oak Street Block Party was kind of money. Free Leftover Salmon show followed by Oak Street Allstars repping out Bear Creek with Adam Deitch, Oteil Burbridge, the Coomes brothers, Krasno, etc. solid. At the Kung Fu plays Steely Dan with 100 people. Lmfao. Bout to start, this shit will kill. And I'm not driving.
Bad ass and random day. Apparently after that superior Kung Fu plays Steely Dan and Kung Fu. I got dragged out to the casino. So I was pretty hungover and took a while to get rolling today. Hit Tbe Word who was pretty good and took a little break to go see Cyril play some reggae and Carribean. That was solid. Then went over to main stage to watch Paniic. We caught about an hour and went and paid about :30 minutes of full respect to Third World who was great. Then we went back to catch the last hour of panic. Got a po'boy and some stuffed shrimp. Both were necessary. We then blew out about 745 for Hatebreed and Slipknot. I figured it would be co headline but Hatebreed only played a short set. They got in I Will Be Heard but it was midcard status. Slipknot came out and played about 90 minutes and kicked ass. Only knock would be they should have had LED back or projection on the stage rather than a screened banner. But it's whatever. Solid ass show anyway. And with that, and all th great shit I saw last week, my Jazzfest comes to an abrupt end.
Leaving out dayside for a wedding in Austin. So I'm boned on the rest of this weekend. I would have gone to Break Science, Primus and probably Zappa plays Zappa unless I went to Go Hard on Saturday.
I was at the oak st block party early enough to catch kung fu. They absolutely slayed. Idk how anyone followed that set. I also got to dunk Oteil in the dunk tank and told him, "you should've stayed with Tedeschi Trucks" as I threw the ball that sent him splashing...
Primus was unreal last night. An hour before the show, some guy offered me a free ticket and $80 to get myself and him a poster. It worked out great. I was dead center on the rail. The chocolate factory set was cool (my 2nd time seeing it) but I'm glad it's wrapping up. The first set was so amazing that the chocolate factory set seemed like a letdown in comparison.

Talked to my middle kid who said the late night Break Science live band show was great. He said it was Break Science with 4 members of Lettuce (plus Deitch and Lee). He said they brought out Dominic Lali for the last half hour and said they tore it up the whole show to what amounted to a live broadcast of The Hot Sh*t
*edit* saw about 10 minutes of clips. Show looked fn great, and I'm sorry to have been out of town for it.
Neighbors told me Meters were great, especially the 2nd half of the set, and Winwood was too at the fest today.
I did Anders > Meters > Winwood > Dr. John today. Winwood was fucking amazing.
I got the superior blue version of that Primus poster from friday night. haha. I am jealous of their setlist from saturday though. Last night, the guys from Kung Fu were at the Zappa show and I hung out with them for a while outside before it started. They guest listed me for their late night show at Parish. Got there in time to catch the last half of Pimps of Joytime and then Kung Fu went on at 2am and played till 4am. It was a very unique set. I've seen them like a dozen times now and they played some new songs and some different versions of some of their old songs this show. Tim was using different guitar tone than normal and they sounded kinda like Lotus. I mean, it was good, but I personally prefer when they rage the fuck out like they did at fiyafest on friday.
Alright, so weekend 2 dominated weekend 1, and it wasn't even close (Sorry wedding mangs)
Not a musical moment, but the overall "highlight" was a synchronicity moment that really tied the whole extended Weds-Sun ragefest together. I'm sitting on DeSaix after fest on Sunday in traffic and fucking Joe Russo walks right past my car, I got his attention and shook his hand and talked for a sec before we were both on our way. Literally the last thing to happen to me as I was leaving NOLA. Sittin in my car after an epcot weekend and my fav drummer for the past couple of years walks right past me and I get to shake his hand. Fuckin' Yazzfest!
Too many awesome sets to really list or try to disect right now as I'm still hazy, but saw a ton of amazing sets and a bunch of cool sit ins. Skerik sitting in with Primus on the 2nd half of the Wonka set + Southbound Pacyhderm encore was pretty epcot.

Yeah Sarge, we ran into stars and almost stars all last weekend. Adam Deitch bummed a cig off me at Oak Street Block Party; Pepper Keenan gave me a chop to the stomach, etc. At one point last weekend, I had a mental list of all the celebs and sort-of-celebs I had seen at various shows and just around in general. But alas, that was a week ago Glad y'all had a good time this weekend. I needed some more, but I can hang tight for another 11 days!

I was really hoping for Amos Moses in the encore but it was still great. I caught "An Evening with Primus" in Port Chester right before the Wonka tour and that was the best show I've seen. Might have to catch them with Dinosour Jr on the upcoming tour though...
My favorite Primus show was during Hallucino-Genetics tour in 2004 at State Palace Theater when they played Sailing the Seas of Cheese all the way through. Tim's drum solo into Eleven for that show was overwhelmingly impressive.
