I've been thinking, it might be fun to do some long term bracketology with this forum with the eventual goal of determining our consensus best album of all time. Itd take a total of 32 weeks to complete (breakdown below). I would be using the Top 200 albums of all time from the website acclaimedmusic.net to create a series of brackets pitting them against each other. Initially, it will be 8 matchups per week, eventually dwindling down to 4, then 2 near the finish, then 1 for the final.
The matchups would be posted on Sunday night and discussion would be open for the entire week. Voting would open at 11:59 PM on Thursday, which you would message me directly to my inbox before voting closes Sunday at noon. At some point on Sunday, I will tally up the votes, announce the winners, and post the matchups for the following week. I want to note that there is no issue with posting your ballot on the thread, but for the sake of making vote-counting easier for me, I will not count anything except direct messages.
Breakdown:
Week 1 will be a preliminary round simply to get us to a workable number of 192. It will feature albums 185-200 on the list.
Week 2 will begin the first round, which will take 8 weeks. 16 albums each week, from the albums ranked 65-184, as well as the 8 winners of the preliminary round, will be involved in matchups. It is worth noting that after each round, the albums remaining will be re-seeded in order of original seeding.
The 2nd round will follow the same format at round 1, with 8 matchups per week, lasting 8 weeks. This round will feature the albums ranked 1-64 for the first time, as well as the remaining 64 albums, re-seeded.
Round 3 will follow the same format as the previous two rounds, with the remaining 64 albums re-seeded, but will only last 4 weeks, because that is all it would take for all of the albums to have been posted at the rate of 16xWeek.
Round 4 will begin the phase where only 8 albums will be posted per week. This will take 4 weeks, which will take us to the round of 16, which will follow the same format as round 4, but will only take two weeks.
The quarterfinals will be the only round in which 4 albums will be posted per week. This round will take 2 weeks.
For the semi-finals and finals, only one matchup will be posted per week. This will take 3 weeks, and bring us to the end of our journey.
The only 2 crucial rules are that A) please do not vote if you have not listened to both albums involved in a matchup in their entireties. B) you are not required to vote on every matchup to submit a ballot.
I will leave this up until Sunday without starting the game, just in case this is viewed as a terrible idea and needs to be scrapped

For the sake of keeping things interesting, I will nit be posting matchups in any week that are exclusively at different ends of the list. For example, the week two matchups would consist of album #65-68 versus the four lowest ranked remaining albums as well as albums 125-128 versus albums 129-132.
How are you coming up with the list of 200 and seeding?

That's actually.... a really solid list. I wouldn't agree with the ordering, but just skimming through the list I didn't notice anything that was either left out, or out of place.

Yeah, it's probably the best one I've found so far. I had a phase where I was obsessed with artist, album, and song lists. Its far from perfect, but it's better than any other alternative.

agreed, this is a non scientific thing just for fun. I think its a pretty good list. If we had to create our own list here somehow Darkside would end up being the greatest album of all time.
Given the current acclaimedmusic list, I doubt Pet Sounds will end up being our #1.
it took me years to wrap my head around why Pet Sounds is so amazing. It did click a few years ago. It was a strangely devastating moment when it all came together.
I'm all for it. I love the chance to discuss and listen to some of the greatest albums of all time.
I completely agree with this sentiment.
Though, while I'm poor at properly discussing, I will be all over reading this thread and participating as much and as fervently as possible, especially because there are plenty of these albums that I haven't heard and plenty that I've heard many times. You're all about to learn (via my voting in this thread - if it proves successful - and through Now Playing Dos) how much great music I've been sleeping on. I blame youth. And inadvertent ignorance.
........Abbey Road isn't even the best The Beatles album. It's not the second best. It's probably not the third best. Fourth maybe, definitely fifth.
Abbey Road Revolver Sgt. Pepper's The White Album Magical Mystery Tour Rubber Soul Let it Be
Isn't there a thread for this somewhere??? I'll play along though:
Sgt. Pepper's Revolver Rubber Soul/White Album/Abbey Road (these all switch around occasionally like I was saying, AR is def top 5 but whether it's 3,4,5 depends on the day)
Meh. Starts strong, drops off in the middle. It's true saving grace is the fact that it has what is probably the greatest ending to any album ever (of course 'The End' medley, but I think starting with She Came in Through the Bathroom Window is when it really picks back up)
If you want to talk truly perfect albums then we have Blood on the Tracks, Remain in Light, Pet Sounds..
