The beauty of this thread is that any album can win. It's purely based on everyone's individual opinions. However, if Kendrick loses, I will be very surprised. In a world where an album like Benji (an album that I still have not been able to finish in it's entirety because I get so bored with it) can beat out St. Vincent, Beck, and Angel Olsen for AOTM Feb 2014, I guess it's not crazy to think that Sufjan can beat Kendrick.
I at least kind of enjoy Sufjan's album. The fact that he whispers the entire time is aggravating, but it's much better than Sun Kil Moon's ramblings. But TPAB is probably the greatest album I've heard in three years. I am just one vote, and there are many votes left to be made. We'll see what happens next Tuesday.
For April, I'm particularly excited for San Fermin's album. The story behind the genesis of SJF is fascinating, the way the group dynamic works between the members, and they are INCREDIBLE live. I've heard some sneak peeks of that new album from seeing them this fall, but I'm really looking forward to hearing the rest.
Considering you've found the need to respond to my threads as if you are threatened by me I offer you some peace my confused counterpart. May you find peace in your restless soul.
I hope April will end up surprising me with help of you all because I'm honestly not that excited for that many things. I either haven't heard of so many of these bands or I know nothing about them. That said, I look forward to what the month will bring and there are certainly no limit of interest-piquing band names I have no idea about. For example: Stranger Cat, Skinny Lister, Turbo Fruits.
Oh but holy shit, I'm most psyched about Suuns And Jerusalem In My Heart. Anything with Suuns, I'm on board with.
As for March, however, it's gonna have to end up being between Courtney Barnett and Tobias Jesso Jr. for me.
I was really digging the Sufjan, Lightning Bolt, and Modest Mouse, but I can't in good conscience put any of them above this. Probably the AotY so far for me
5.5/four tet, daphni b2b floating points, avalon emerson 5.12/neil young 5.19/mannequin pussy 5.21/serpentwithfeet 5.25/hozier 6.12-16/bonnaroo 6.28/goose 6.29/goose 9.17/the national + the war on drugs 9.23/sigur ros 9.27-29/making time 10.17/air
Anddddd there goes the race haha. I agree with whoever said above that Kendrick will almost certainly win - though personally, after listening a few times and reflection, I think I am on board the GKMC>TPAB train.
But everyone and their mother here knows who I really really want to win, and I'll just pout silently in my corner since it is lookin' like it wont happen.

I feel bad for you that you cannot hear the beauty that is Benji. I live in the Midwest, so when he tells stories of his home in Ohio, it provokes images that I can easily connect with. Maybe it's a regional thing. Idk.
Also glad to see Modest Mouse get some love. I think if it had been about three tracks shorter a lot more people would have shown it some love.
Completely agree. There are a few decent-but-unremarkable tracks on there kinda weighing it down, but the majority of the album is fantastic, IMO. Definitely on my honorable mention list for the month.

Same here, still love it though. Not sure if the looooonng wait had anything to do with that Excited to see them later this month in Dallas.
I was down to this vs. Kendrick and I'm pretty sure hes got it locked up anyway so...
Death Grips - The Powers That B
HM: Kendrick, Sufjan, Tobias Jesso Jr, Lightning Bolt, Laura Marling, The Soft Moon, Courtney Barnett, etc... (sorry for the long list, but such a large variety of great albums)
I'm voting for this, as well. I really like Kendrick (especially the production) but I find some of the lyrics annoying and the social implications to be completely overrated and not nearly as deep as some people are saying. This, though, felt authentic and personal.

Ok, sorry to reopen this, but I keep trying to get that Kendrick Lamar album and it's just not happening. I start getting tired of it around "this dick ain't free" lyric over the free form jazz, am exhausted by "I remember you was conflicted, misusing your influence. Sometimes, I did the same", and am just over it by The Blacker The Berry. When Kendrick starts his speed rapping, I can't understand what he is even saying and really am not even feeling the music behind it. There are two songs I do enjoy (How much a dollar cost and complexion) and I think the production on it is AMAZING, but for the most part I think the songs are boring. I'm not trying to start anything, I'm trying to understand this album. I want to like it, I am just getting it right now.

Basically.
I think of TPAB very much the same way I think of 12 Years a Slave.
Do I see how it's a great album? Yes. Does that mean I like it? No. I like certain songs (How much a Dolla Cost, Complexion, and i come to mind), but as an album it just falls short.

Put my vote in for Sufjan. I loved that album.
Make sure you put the album cover of the one you are voting for. To be honest there are so many good choices this month that it is hard to be wrong with your vote.

That's the exact way I feel about the Sufjan album. I think it's a nice album with some sweet lyrics but it's not something I think is next level or anything.
I really liked the harmonies on All of Me Wants All Of You. I wish there would've been more moments like that on the album instead of Sufjan just whispering the whole way through.
