Hi guys!
My name is Katie and I'm new to the message board! I've gone to Firefly Music Festival in Delaware the past few years. I've always been interested in Bonnaroo and this year my friends and I are making the switch! I have some friends that have gone/will go, but I love being a part of the community. I am a part of the Firefly page on Facebook and their message board. I figured that I should get on here and try to get some tips from people. I have so many different questions that I don't even know where to start. I'm sure I will think of more questions along the way. Here are some:
I have heard that RV camping is awesome and that you don't actually need an RV. How much do these sites go for?
I understand that camping comes with each ticket, but is there a "premier" or "better" camp site that costs more?
If I get there early is it better? At Firefly, the earlier the better. I would lineup hours before the camping gates opened.
Where's your favorite place to camp? How many lots are there? I don't mind a walk, but the closer the better for me so I can come and go.
How big are the spots? What if my tent is too big?
I'll have to live with it, but how are the showers and port-a-potties?
Welcome! Those are all good questions, but some of them are a little complicated and all have been answered somewhere on the boards. Check out this link which points to a ton of good information. If you still have questions after reading some of that ask away!
Better camping is VIP and requires a VIP ticket. I don't think this is worth it for what they get.
Earlier means nothing. I get there usually around midnight to 2am Wed night every year. We have gotten 5min walk and we have gotten a 40min walk and everything in between.
You have no control over where you are camped. Unless you get the family camping, VIP, or Tent City.
You get about 10'x12' in front/behind your car. We normally have 2 vehicles and can fit 2 tents and an easy up between them. Our tents are 10x10 which I think is kind of a normal size.
Never used the showers though some of my friends have. There is a long line and it costs money. I don't think it is worth it as there are trofts you can rinse off with for free. You need mud boots for these.
Porto potties are good first thing in the mornings. After that they can get bad. They are cleaned several times a day so just hit them after you see the truck drive away. Bring your own toilet paper.

I can't remember where exactly, but I am 99.9% sure that they have stated that you need an RV to camp in RV camping. You can't just buy an RV pass and set up tents.

I took it to mean renting an RV. But they didn't do that last year did they?

I understand that camping comes with each ticket, but is there a "premier" or "better" camp site that costs more? You can get a VIP ticket for guaranteed closer campsite and more perks. But as far as GA goes, it's a crap shoot where you end up.
If I get there early is it better? At Firefly, the earlier the better. I would lineup hours before the camping gates opened. Like I said above, it's a crap shoot. I've gone through the gates around the same time both years and got two different locations. First year we ended up in Pod 1 towards the back, last year we were in Marty McFly.
Where's your favorite place to camp? How many lots are there? I don't mind a walk, but the closer the better for me so I can come and go. Pod 1 was fun, but the walk sucked. You won't be going back and forth to camp throughout the day if you're there. I liked where we were last year (Marty McFly). Wherever you end up camped, you'll make friends and have a great time. There are TONS of camping lots. Google a map of previous years to get a better idea.
How big are the spots? What if my tent is too big? Somewhere around 10'x20'. We fit a 10'x10' EZ-up and a 2-3 person tent comfortably. If you're going with a group, you can combine your campsites (if your group is big enough, check out Groop camping). Or just make friends with your neighbors to create as much shade as possible.
I'll have to live with it, but how are the showers and port-a-potties? The portos are portos. Bring a headlamp or flashlight for nighttime (even in Centeroo), toilet paper, etc. Showers are $7 and they are often cold, which was actually kinda refreshing last year.

I took it to mean renting an RV. But they didn't do that last year did they?
They did not do RV Rentals last year. Something about the contract with the company falling through. My recollection is more from the Ask Gary years where people said that was their master plan to secure a larger site, and they got shot down.

I understand that camping comes with each ticket, but is there a "premier" or "better" camp site that costs more? You can get a VIP ticket for guaranteed closer campsite and more perks. But as far as GA goes, it's a crap shoot where you end up. There is also groop camping, which is next to RVs and about a 10 min walk. I think it was $40 a person last year. People make groops on here so you don't have to have 40 people to do this

I cant say for certain but I was under the impression that you can purchase the RV spot without an RV. I went with friends past two years that had a pop up camper (technically an RV so im not sure) and I pithed tent there. Im guessing RV spots are 10x50. It makes sense if you want more space if they allow you to do that. Im also estimating that GA spots are 10x20. Its enough space for you to park your car, tent, and an ez-up. Not much more than that. I dont think it was ever too loud from generators or fumes in the RV area. It always seems like everyone runs out of gas the first day. The RV area the past two years was a pretty good spot to camp at as its just a 1 beer (15-20min) walk into centeroo. You use the non arch entrance near the other tent.
If you and friends are willing on taking extra vehicles , each person can get their own GA spot. Roll in to the same time and you should be able to be camped together making for a larger spot. Volunteers are usually pretty nice about getting caravans together for people wanting to camp next to each other.

Yeah, a pop-up camper counts as an RV in Roo's eyes. You can put tents up next to an RV in an RV spot, but as mentioned, be mindful of where generator exhaust is blowing.

Dear Dave Maynar: when you say "pop-up camper"... do you think the Vanagon Westfalia would qualify as camper-viewed-as-RV-by-Roo?
Camping with a friend who went to Roo for the first time last year with one pair of shoes and decided to buy this camper when he got home. Great guy to party with, but doesn't necessarily plan ahead. This might turn into a pain for my little GA caravan.
Also, mods - sorry if I'm posting in and bumping the wrong thread, it was up front tonight and super relevant.

From the handy dandy www.bonnaroo.com (http://www.bonnaroo.com/tickets#rv-parking-options)
"An RV is defined as any vehicle larger either in length, width or height than a normal 15-passenger van. All oversized vehicles, trailers, campers that are towed, and busses are considered RVs."

No that's not an rv.
Thank you! I was looking for the RV dimensions last night on the site last night and it said "coming soon". Appreciate the help!
1. Can't answer your questions about RV camping as I've never done it. I've had friends that have but I certainly have had a great time in a hammock and a pop up tent.
2. As other posters have said the only way to get "premier" camping is to get a VIP ticket which I have to agree is not really worth it. Camping with the rest of the GA field is really part of the experience. I have made best friends with my neighbors in the past and still hang out with them regularly outside of Roo.
3. Where you camp is a crap shoot. I've been extremely lucky in my camping spots all three years. I've literally been within a 100 foot radius every time. No idea how that had happened it's just been pure luck. No matter where you are though the walk to and from Centeroo isn't that bad.
4. Space for camping is plenty for anyone especially if you set up quick and get the tarps out and claim your land.
5. Like others have said, porta potties are porta potties. Just have to learn the cleaning cycle. I would recommend baby wipes and gold bond.
6. They have showers on the farm but I believe they are $7. Just go and get a solar shower. Once there you can fill it up with water and put it on the roof of your car and have a nice warm shower every day. Invested in once of these last year and it made a huge difference to my comfort level and general smelliness.

I can't really comment on RV or VIP as I've never done it.
But as far as space goes- we did it one year with a four man tent and an ez up. The key is to immediately make friends with your neighbors. We made friends with the kids parked behind us- and we pushed our ez ups together and made a communal shade area and ended sharing a lot of stuff. It was pretty awesome.
As far as Portos go- I don't think they are too insanely terrible. The way I survived them was to carry a little Porto pack with me to keep them clean and have everything handy. Also - don't forgot how dark they get at night! Some type of headlamp saved my butt a few times. Also be prepared for some muddy conditions. By the 3rd or 4th day the areas in front of them was soo muddy you needed rain boots or just a really good jump to not get covered.
As for showers - I didn't bother. I used the troughs for hands and arms- but I bought stock in baby wipes and they work wonders! Every night and morning- fresh as a baby's bottom.

Sure, you can purchase an RV pass on the website today. That doesn't mean they are going to mark your vehicle at the gate and send you to the RV area. In fact, their policy is the opposite. If you arrive at the gate in a regular vehicle they won't except the RV pass. They will treat you like everyone else. I know this from direct communication with the Bonnaroo people when my group's RV fell through one year. I'm lucky enough to have awesome friends, so everything ended up working out.
So don't buy an RV pass thinking your guaranteed that space with any vehicle you wish to bring. If you want to spend a little extra for room then do Groop Camping.
SupeЯfuЯЯyanimal I appreciate it! We have no experience bringing this thing in, so everybody else's are helpful. Thanks!
No problem. One piece of advice, if that's air cooled you're gonna want to be very careful coming to Roo in it. Like trying to come in as early as possible or time it where you are in line at night. I might be pointing out the obvious, but we over-heated because of sitting in line for so long. If you have questions start your own thread about it.
LoveLuckLaughter is a VW specialist. She'll have some words of wisdom or at least words.

Everyone has given you great wisdom. All I'm left with are some words.
Your Westy is definitely a GA vehicle, as they said. You could try an RV pass and find a volunteer who will go for it, but no guarantee.
Are you sleeping in the popup bed? If you are going to take the lower bed and not pop him up, I HIGHLY recommend putting him under an EZ up. I have a 10 by like 15 or something like that that I extend to the highest position and walk over mine when I camp. It gives protection from the rain to keep windows and hatches open for maximum air flow and much needed shade. It feels kinda like sleeping in a hot house while it bakes in the sun other wise. If you are popping him, I would rig some kind of shade device if you can, tapestries hung across a pull apart PVC based "clothes line", or something. Also consider buying reflective material or cutting window shades to size for the other windows. I Velcroed some reflective hydroponic material that I custom cut. It removes easily then but stays put as needed.
I see what I think are air cooled vents. Unless you have converted or added an oil cooling system, the air cooled overheating is a HUGE problem, as SFA said. We had to tow him behind the RV for a bit to give him a break. I have a custom dune buggy engine, so my pan and seals are not present, and so my "air-cooled" mechanism isn't functional, and I tend to overheat pretty easy when I'm at a stand still. But the sometimes 6 hr line in TN heat is hard on any air cooled Dub. So check your seals, have your mechanic adjust your timing and change your oil to the right weight for summer months and your engine.
We're all a mess of paradoxes. Believing in things we know can't be true. We walk around carrying feelings too complicated and contradictory to express. But when it all becomes too big, and words aren't enough to help get it all out, there's always music.

For the record, I would like to state that I absolutely hate the whole mad rush to jump out of your car with tarp in hand to claim space. In 2010-2012 the spots we had were not marked, and everyone in our area happily had more than enough space. The last two years I got spots that seemed very small and were clearly marked with white lines, yet some groups acted like they didn't see them so they could spread out 4 tents and two canopies in one spot, taking much of their neighbors' sites (no, not just mine). Don't be that guy, and don't be rude if your neighbor points out that you've taken half of their barely adequate space. Plan accordingly to make use of the space allotted to you, ask the parkinrg staff to leave you some space if you are carpooling, and try to make nice with the neighbors. Arriving with friends and sharing space is the best thing you can do.
Yes, the portos kind of suck, but not because they don't get cleaned, since they do. It's just the nature of the beast. And yes, Goldbond is a good idea, though Bodyglide or Goldbond Friction Defense are even better to prevent chafing, and go on just like stick deodorant. Best stuff ever. Oh, and baby wipes and/or something like Cottonelle wipes, for your feet as well as your unmentionable areas.
Those solar shower bags are cheap and effective, if you don't need great privacy or can rig something up. Otherwise, $7 doesn't seem so bad once you form over the dough and get clean. Even when they're cold and there are lines, there's nothing like a good shower if you've been getting all sweaty, dirty, and awesome for a day or two.

@lovelucklaughter thank you for the tips! Checking into whether the VW is air-cooled for sure. We were actually hoping for GA and not wanting to spring for the TV pass, so this is all good news to us. My friend that owns it lives in NC and I'm up in Ohio, so I haven't seen the new digs in person yet. Bonnaroo this year will be the maiden voyage, so I bet we will be feeling out his name soon You guys are all the best for commenting with tips and suggestions!

I was carried to Ohio in a storm of bees.
Like I was going to let you out of the morning without Brak.
CHICKEN NUGGETS IN MY PANTS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Don't even care how many people call me gay for cleaning myself. Reddit seems like a nice place.
I'm the meantime this summer, I'll be all like: "Enjoy the show as I rub this soapy ice cube over my scrawny frame. Is it the bonieness or the pale skin that reminds you of Skeletor?"
In the end, I'll smell nice, and anyone watching will be strangely turned on. Everyone wins.
