The only act I've seen from Roo '15 is Twenty One Pilots twice, once in April and once in September of 2014.
The April show was indoors at University of Cincinnati, and you had to be a student to have floor access, so my buddy and I were in the bleachers. The crowd was going crazy and we wished we could be a part of it, which is why we went again in September at an outdoor venue. Same exact show with a few covers added into the set list, but the guys had the exact same crowd interaction at both shows. It was fun to be a part of the crowd at the second show, but at the same time it cheapened the experience for me because I've heard that their shows for the past few years have all been the same. Additionally, it was the most unruly crowd I've ever been a part of, I was right by the bar at the front and almost had to leave, and I've never bitched out of a good spot before because of the crowd. I like their music and they put on a killer live show, and if you've never seen them and want to jump around and have a good time and there are no conflicts, check it out. I won't be there unless there is nothing better to see.
2014:
April 05 - Twenty One Pilots
May 15 - Lana Del Rey
May 30 - Why?
June 12-15 - Roo '14
June 24 - Arctic Monkeys
September 05 - Twenty One Pilots
September 23 - Lorde
September 26 - Why?

Billy Joel - (w/ Elton John 2001) Joel was actually the much more engaging of the two and because the show was split it was just hit after hit. I still don't really like him being the #1 on the line-up but I think he fits the Sunday closer bill quite well. I expect him to surprise a lot of people. (A-)
Deadmau5 - (the previously mentioned Roo 2010 show.) This was the 3rd act of maybe the best night of my life so I'll always have a soft spot for deadmau5. The crowd energy was through the roof and his music is "big" enough to carry the main stage. I'll be there for at least 3/4ths of it. (A+)
Kendrick - (Roo 13) Didn't enjoy this one very much. But it was Sunday Afternoon and all he had was a DJ. If he goes full band and his new album supports that, it could be a fantastic show. - Push
Robert Plant & his new band - (Forecastle 2013) - Actually enjoyed this show quite a lot though it was cut short by a storm. The Zeppelin songs sound great. Plant's voice is 80% but when he's on, he's really on. And the band is top notch. Their new album "Lullaby and the Ceaseless Roar" was actuallly a pretty enjoyable listen. (B)
MMJ - (Louisville 2010 at the Yum Center, part of 2008 legendary show, Jim James solo at Forecastle 2013) - They're good at what they do, but my personal experiences have been varied. The Yum Center concert was good but I was in the back. 2008 I bounced around a lot and missed the later epicness. James solo was actually my favorite of the 3. Still, you know what you're getting. I want to be there. But late night, I might go another route. We'll see what the night has in store. (B+)
Bassnectar - (Bonnaroo 2010) Waiting for LCD Soundsystem, I ended up front row at this show. All I remember is a collage of light, bass and people. I didn't even see the epic glow stick wars until I watched Youtube later. Still, he was fantastic. Saw a bit of him at Forecastle in 2012 and it didn't have the same magic. Still, this is a rager and people who go will leave satisfied. (B+)
Flume - (Forecasle 2014) - fun Sunday evening show. His Lorde remix is epic. I personally think he should be listed 22 rather than 11, but whatever. His show will be fun, but I'll probably skip it since I've seen him before. (B)
Atmosphere - (Forecastle 2012) - Fun show even though I knew only a few songs. Slug's a great rapper and has a lot of energy. But another skip because I've already seen it. (B-)
21 Pilots - (Bonnaroo 2013, the end of their show Forecastle 2014) - Yeah their music isn't the best. But their live show has energy to spare. If you care about their music at all, you'll have fun at this show. I saw them, so I'll probably be somewhere else. But this is the definition of a guilty pleasure. (B)
Bluegrass Situation - (Roo 2014) - Saw the first half of this show and missed the Avett Brothers (damn). But its still an off the cuff Bluegrass Superjam. It's awesome. If it's against Caribou, I'll miss it. But barring conflicts its a great way to end the weekend. Great time. (A-)
Flying Lotus - (Roo 2012, Forecastle 2012) - Yeah this was his DJ tour, but both shows were a blast. I'm actually in the Pitchfork documentary "Fly First" in the crowd at his Forecastle show. So that's cool. I'll be at this show almost no matter what. You're Dead didn't hit me as hard as I wanted, but he's still a fantastic musician with a killer live show. (A+)
Gary Clark Jr. - (Roo 2012, Forecastle 2014) - guitar jams, blues, the end. He's really great and if he opens the day again on the What then I'll be there. But in conflicts I'll go the other way. (B)
Run the Jewels - (Forecastle 2013, Killer Mike @ Roo 13) - they've come a long way in a year and a half. Killer Mike is amazing live. El-P keeps up but you know. Still, I love RTJ 2 and will almost definitely be there. (A+)
Trampled By Turtles - (Forecastle 2014) - I hated this show. It was burning hot on an outside stage and every song was mid-tempo other than "Wait So Long." If they're on the Which, avoid avoid avoid. (D)
Against Me! - (Roo 2008, Warped Tour 2008, Roo 2011, Cincinnati 2014, Forecastle 2014 and maybe Louisville in February) - I love this band. I love the new album. Live they're a ball of energy EXCEPT at the Forecastle show. They played mid-day on a big stage and it just wasn't the best fit. If they have a tent show, go and soak it up because they'll kill it. (A+)

Rudimental - Sasquatch 2014 - Great show, tons of energy and top 5 of that weekend. I love electronic acts that add in instrumentals and though their albums have a ton of big name vocalists that are too big to join them at the shows, their live fill-ins are great. In retrospect, I'm glad they dropped last year and came back this year. Grade: A
Ben Folds - Multiple - The Gorge 2006(ish), San Francisco (x2) 2008, 2010 - As everyone knows, his piano skills are insane and translate great live. His voice isn't what it used to be in my opinion but he still puts on a great show. Grade: B+
Bassnectar - Multiple - Roo 2011, Paradiso (at the Gorge) 2014. Tons of energy, had a great time both times. He didn't quite have his new stage setup going when I saw him last year so I'm looking forward to it for the LN Which. Grade: B
Childish Gambino - Roo 2011, Los Angeles Fall 2011. I prefer his older stuff and I'm sure his performance has changed a lot over the years as his music has evolved but he had a great backing band and like everyone says, tons of energy. On my probably list but will depend on conflicts. Grade: B
Florence - Coachella 2012 - Left her set early just because the Dre/Snoop/Kendrick/Pharrell/Eminem/Tupac Hologram experience began. But her show was fantastic, I've always loved her music and she really translates well live. She, I assume, will be a preheadliner and is in my top 10, barring any conflicts.
I'm really looking forward to this year as there aren't a ton that I've seen before. All these reviews are real helpful for Roo itself and when the bands come through town as well. Keep them coming!
Mac Demarco - Roo 2013. I saw his set during R Kelly and it was amazing. I never expected his show to be as insane as it was. If you haven't seen him, do it. It's an A+ show.
Slayer - Mayhem Festival. I've seen them at 2 Mayhem Festivals, each on different years. I don't remember the exact years. As many people have said before, a Slayer show is unlike any other show you can go to. It's pure chaos being mended together by a man that looks like a tan Santa. This is a show you can't miss. Even being as heavy as they are, both times I have seen them they played everything perfectly and with so much force you can't help but get goosebumps. If you are a metal fan, DO NOT MISS IT! A-
Run The Jewels (kind of) - If Killer Mike's 2013 show at Bonnaroo has any indication, you'd be stupid to miss it. A+
Deadmau5 @ Ultra 2012 and NYE last year: By far the best EDM act out there IMO. He takes you on this amazing journey throughout his set and then finally he sends you on your way with Strobe to end it.
Kendrick & Childish Gambino: Full disclosure I am not the biggest rap fan out there but neither of these two have held my attention when I've seen them on the farm.
Bassnectar I've seen twice and his shows are just absolutely nuts. Very high energy and two shows are never the same. He will have you dancing.
Holy crap this is the first time realizing that I haven't seen that many artists on this years line up!

Mumford & Sons (1x) - I'm not really a fan of the band, but I saw them in 2011-ish and enjoyed the show. If you are on the fence, I would recommend checking them out. Energetic performance, and they seem to really enjoy what they do. Grade: B
Kendrick Lamar (2x) - Saw him twice at Bonnaroos past. The first time was garbage, but the second time was great. I'd expect him to have improved even more since then, and I'm really excited to see what he's got going on. Grade: B
Florence + The Machine (1x) - Saw her in a midsize venue, and she killed it. Her voice was insane, probably the best (most impressive) vocalist I've ever heard live. And it's my understanding that she really shines in a festival setting, so I can really recommend this one, if you're on the fence. Grade: A
My Morning Jacket (3x) - Don't go see this band at Bonnaroo. Stay at your tent, grab a drink, wander around, whatever you do just stay away. Grade: Double F-
Alabama Shakes (3x) - Really good all three times, she can really sing. I'm kind of shocked at their high placement on the lineup, but good for them. Grade: A
Slayer (1x) - I think one of them has died since I saw them a couple years ago. They were awesome, if you're into that kind of thing. Really impressive. I'm pretty sure everyone knows whether they're going to enjoy this or not already, but I can testify that they still sound great. Grade: B+
Gary Clark, Jr. (1x) - He was great at Roo a few years ago, check him out if you can. Pretty straightforward blues. Grade: B+
Trampled By Turtles (1x) - Saw them at Lolla '12 and I was bored out of my mind. The people around me seemed to enjoy it well enough, but it was pretty uninteresting to me. Grade: D
Pokey Lafarge (2x) - I saw this guy open for Jack White for a few shows. Just trust me on this one, you have to check him out. Lots of energy, really fun, and there's not really anything else like it. The guy looks and sounds like he walked right out of the 1920's, and it's just a lot of fun. Grade: A+

Billy Joel- bridgestone ? On year- great show. He surprised us with shook me all night long cover with a roadie on lead vocals! Great song along
Mumford- I'm a fan- great sing along, good energy. If you are not a fan, just rail up for a LN show and leave more space for pseudo bluegrass loving people. Lolla 2013
Kendrick- as a fan, I have enjoyed but I understand the reluctance as a headliner. Hoping for big jump in his live show. Lolla and Hangout 2013
Florence- can't miss for me. Engaging, powerful. She set the table well for Pearl jam at midtown Atlanta in 2012.
Robert Plant- forecastle 2013- meh sadly. I hope the shape shifters have gotten better.
MMJ- yep everyone else is right. My brother drug me to a show and they were all I listened to for two months. Forecastle 2012
Bass head- 360 shows NYE is Nashville- it will be fun. Pretty bland the second time through.
Shakes- if Brittany is involved it is pretty good. I have seen one good show and two just okay shows. Local show 2012- good show; fests roo 2012, hangout 2012- just okay
GCjr- I just can't get enough! Gotta see him at least once. Maybe 5 times- best one shaky knees 2013 in the rain!
Gambino- go back to TV Donald Glover with your jorts- do not like his brand of hip hop. Seen him twice- just can't get into it. Hangout 2014, local show 2013 Leads me to RtJ- awesome, I love me some killer mike! RtJ- forecastle 2013
Put me in the positive for moon taxi. I have known the guys since Belmont days- nice guys and they love to play with their music so everything sounds different from show to show plus RatM covers are pretty solid. Seen them a dozen times, they love showing out for middle TN. I feel like they may sneak into a LN spot. If I find out, I will let you know.
May Tycho May Phoenix June Rooo July MMJ and Margo Price August Queen with Adam Lambert August Roger Waters (Bucket list #1) August Spoon and Portugal the man Sept Depeche Mode Sept Pilgrimage Fest
Kendrick Lamar - Bonnaroo 2013. One of the worst sets I've seen at Bonnaroo. F. I caught the end of the set when he opened for Kanye and was a huge improvement.
Robert Plant - My parents took me to see him when I was 6 years old (1989). At the time Immigration Song was my jam. The show was the best shit ever at the time A++++. I saw Page and Plant in high school. I was blown away at the time. A+++. I haven't had any interest in seeing him since.
Childish Gambino - Centennial Olympic Park 2014. Opened for Outkast. Last year was really bad for seeing terrible openers. F
Bassnectar - Bonnaroo 2011 - Caught a little bit after Arcade Fire. This bro with no shirt and a bear on a totem was bouncing into everybody and yelling, "MOLLY BEAR!!!" That was it for me.
MMJ - Bonnaroo 2011. Pit line for Arcade Fire. Enjoyed it but it wasn't from the best spot. B-. Verizon Wireless Alpharetta 2012 or 2013. A+. Lakewood Americanarama. B+. I feel like I saw them one other time, but I can't remember right now.
Spoon - Center Stage Atlanta ~2007. B. Tabernacle ~2009: Bradford Cox of Deerhunter played some songs with them. B+. Center Stage 2014. B+.
War on Drugs - Tabernacle 2014. Good band. Lame weekday crowd. I think it will be much better at Roo. B+
STS9 - Bonnaroo twice. B-. Tabernacle once. B-. Verizon Wireless w/ Big Boi. B+. My wife loves them, so going to see them with her makes me happy.
Flying Lotus - Bonnaroo: Bare bones stage setup. B+. Tabernacle 2014: Extravagant 3D stage setup. B+. I don't care for much of You're Dead and I think even his best material sounds better with headphones than live.
Caribou - New Orleans 2014. Killer sound manipulating set. A+
Run the Jewels - Counterpoint 2014. Very fun, but was cut short due to rain. B+
Bela Fleck - Bonnaroo 2010 or 2011. Awful. F
Mac Demarco - Walking back from a Chelsea Light Moving show, the back door was open to Mac's show down the street. I slipped in to watch the end of the set and it was ape shit crazy. Tons of covers. Probably would have been fun to see the whole thing, but I can't really rank it based on what I saw.
Unknown Mortal Orchestra - Tabernacle opening for somebody that I can't remember. They sucked ass. D
Jungle - Terminal West 2014. One of my favorite shows of last year. I saw them after Outkast played Centennial Park and I liked it better. They blew me away. A+
Woods - Variety Playhouse 2013. Opened for the Walkmen. Woods are one of my favorite bands. The songs were great, however the transitions were really awkward. They didn't have their tape deck manipulator guy with them to provide that noise element. Good with a lot of potential. B
Iceage - 529 2012. Sounds like pure noise and could barely make out any of the songs. Biggest pit I've ever seen at that bar. There is a lot more dynamics to their new material and the Roo soundsystems are much better than 529's. I'm hoping for a good set. C
Strand of Oaks - The Earl 2014. Dude can wail on the geetar. B
Pallbearer - The Earl 2014. Tombs opened and were really good. I really don't like Pallbearer that much, but I wanted to give them a chance live to see if it would change my mind. It didn't. I'm just not a big Doom fan. I left and went to Screaming Females who rocked the fuck out. D+

Twenty-one pilots- Roo '13, my friends dragged me along to see them. I had never heard of them before but it was a pretty fun show. Also saw them oct 2014 at Aragon ballroom in chicago. Not as good as their roo performance. But still good. Very entertaining group if you don't completely hate their music. B
Mumford and sons- dixon, il stopover in 2012. That one was special because the small town of dixon is where I used to live at that time. So It was cool for something that big and for 15,000 extra people to be around enjoying where you live every day. Great show, the guys seemed to genuinely be having fun up there. A -Marcus amphitheater, Milwaukee, WI. They seemed to be sorta irritated the whole show. Very carefree. Decent show. C+
Phox- Aragon ballroom December 2014 in chicago. They opened up for the head and the heart. I had never heard of phox. I may have listened to one song on my drive to the venue. I was pleasantly surprised by them. And was hoping they'd get a spot at bonnaroo. I'll definately stop by them for a few songs this year. B+
Jessica Hernandez and the deltas- the metro chicago 2014. They opened for St. Paul and the broken bones. Dig the horns they use, the singer (Jessica) is phenomenal and pretty darn good lookin, keyboard and guitarist could use some practice. Being a musician you pick up on subtle things, mainly the keyboardist couldn't keep time. Kept pausing And looking back at the drummer to keep his rhythm. Small band though, I picture them as a very early Thursday act. Look forward to catching some of their set. B
Dawes- opened for Mumford at the stopover. I liked them. I'll see then for a bit if nothin else is goin on. B
My Morning Jacket (3x) - Don't go see this band at Bonnaroo. Stay at your tent, grab a drink, wander around, whatever you do just stay away. Grade: Double F-
Billy Joel-- my girlfriend and I saw him at Bridgestone last March. Great showman. He played everything that I was hoping that he would play. Shameless was awesome! Mumford and Sons--Saw them in Atlanta and in Louisville. Too trashed at the Atlanta show to remember much, but the Louisville show impressed me. Florence and the Machine--saw them at Roo 2011, not impressed...however, I saw her at Memphis in May Fest a few years ago. That show is easily in my top 5 shows ever. Robert Plant--my girlfriend is a HUGE Led Zeppelin fan. We saw him at Forecastle Fest last year and he was fantastic My Morning Jacket-- I've seen them at Roo, at the Final Four free show in Atlanta a couple of years ago, and at Forecastle. They always put on an unbelievable show. Bassnectar-- saw them at Roo...forgot what year. They were cool. Alabama Shakes--saw them at Live on the Green in Nashville and at Forecastle. Both shows were a great time Childish Gambino--saw him at Roo and Memphis in May Fest-- he was aiiight. Gary Clark Jr.--saw him at Forecastle last year. My friend was dying to see him. I'm a fan now too Trampled by Turtles--saw them at Live on the Green and Forecastle. Good show. Moon Taxi--Ive seen Moon Taxi like, 10 times. We went to their NYE show at War Memorial in Nashville a couple of weeks ago. Fabulous. Fantastic. That's all I have to say about that Bela Fleck--I saw him and his Flecktones in my elementary school auditorium when they played an assembly. I was in sixth grade. I don't know if that counts Soja--I saw him at Roo 2012. I was right in front. I could feel the bass in my throat. I saw him the artist bar too. I don't know how he stands the summer heat with all those dreads! Anyways, I enjoyed his show.
Flying Lotus (x2): I found out he was playing in London while I was visiting my sister a couple years ago, who was studying abroad. I did not hear about his amazing visual set-up (I think he was just starting to use it) but I was blown away. I saw him again in Orlando recently, with the same set up, and it was great once again. I'll see FlyLo any chance I get. A-
Childish Gambino (Roo '12): My brother saw him the year prior at Bonnaroo and thought the show was great. I did not think this show was great. I only caught the last half or so but it was terrible. D
21 Pilots (Roo '12): While I'm not a fan of their recorded music at all, they do have a very entertaining live show. Even though their music sucks, the Roo crowd should make this one at least semi-enjoyable. B
SBTRKT (Roo '12): I saw him right before Childish's set and it might be my favorite Roo show of all time. I have nothing for praise for this act. On the flip side, I will mention that I was a little disappointed with his last record, which wasn't as good as the previous one. Still, I'm absolutely planning on going to this show. A
Mac Demarco (Roo '13): Couldn't hear shit. R. Kelly played too loud. God damn you, Robert! Grade: Incomplete.
Run the Jewels: This wasn't exactly Run the Jewels, it was Killer Mike opening for El-P on tour. The time the venue here in Orlando had them start playing was crap and there weren't that many people who showed up. I'm fully expecting a new show, with new material and a better crowd, to be much better. Still, I have to begrudgingly rate them lowly because of factors that weren't exactly in their control. C
Shabazz Palaces: I think they opened for The Helio Sequence when I saw them. Pretty good but nothing worth raving over. B-
Kendrick Lamar - 3 times (1 theater show, 2 festivals) and I fucking hated every single show. But, all of those show were in early - mid 2013, when he just had the DJ and only rapped like a third of his songs and let the audience scream the rest and had a bunch of air horns noises... Anyway, I hated it. That being said, from his performances on SNL and the Colbert Report and what I've heard from people who saw him open for Kanye, he is one of my most anticipated shows because I love his music and it'll be amazing if his new album is out and he performs similar to his recent tv appearances. This show will be the first time I attempt to make it in the pit at the What stage, you should do the same. Past Performances: D-
Flume - November 2013, @ Firestone in Orlando. It was fun and a lot more energetic than I ever expected it to be. He has an awesome biggie remix that he plays (at least, he used to play it) and he's got some great collaboration tracks with various rappers that are awesome. If you're looking for something chill, do not attend because the crowd WILL be dancing their asses of at this show. I will probably not be attending this set because he will most likely get a LN and he is still young and will tour for frequently for a long time Past Performance: B+
STS9 - Buku 2013 (2 sets) and Hangout 2014, they're always good but they have been fucking killing it lately. If you talk to anybody that is a fan of STS9 that has seen them within the past 9 months or so, they'll agree that STS9 is doing something special right now. They'll probably close a LN tent this year with a long badass set. Sadly, I'll probably skip it because of conflicts and I've seen them multiple times. But, if you're a fan and you haven't seen them, this should be one of your top ten most anticipated shows and consume lots of corn if you really want your mind blown, the STS9 show will literally be perfect for it. Past Performances: A-
Twenty One Pilots - Bonnaroo 2013 and Big Guava 2014, I got brought to both of these shows by an ex-girlfriend. I'm not crazy about their music but I will say that have tons of energy involved in their performance and it rubs off on the crowd. If you can make a tent go crazy at Bonnaroo on Thursday in the early afternoon (which they did), you get my respect as a performer. Aside from all the stuff they with the crowd, the best part of their show, BY FAR, is a Gary Jules style cover of Mad World by Tears for Fears. So, I'm going to set aside whether or not a I like their music and focus on the show/sound, if you like their music at all and you don't have a major conflict, go to this, you'll have a lot of fun and leave at least five pounds lighter from sweating so much. But I'll be skipping it. Past Performances: B
Caribou - The Social in Orlando (I think) last November, Caribou is badass and the live show is absolutely awesome!!! Many people don't realize that a Caribou show is A LIVE SHOW WITH A BAND, it is not just a DJ. He has Sunday as his bonnaroo date on his tour dates, which may or may not be correct, but if that is the case, the good news is that the conflict(s) won't be as bad as if it were a LN. So, if there isn't a huge conflict and you like the new album, go to caribou and have a great time. Past Performance: A-
Gary Clark Jr. - Hangout 2014, I went because I play guitar myself, so I love Clark's passion in his playing. You can hear the passion in the music and, by god, if you see him live, you see the passion he pours into every note. He plays the same guitar as all the Beatles did and puts out soulful blues that are going to be perfect for the late afternoon What or Which stage slot that he gets. If you're a musician, especially a guitarist, go to this show whether or not you know his music. And if you aren't a musician, go to this show and you'll walk away wanting to become a musician just so you can look as cool as Gary Clark. Past Performance: B
Dawes - Early 2014, opening for Conor Oberst at The Beacham in Orlando. They were good, sounded pretty good. I didn't know much of their music so it was great for me, but it was a pretty good show. What was cool about them was that they opened for Oberst and THEN, they acted as his band when he came out to do his set. So it was like Dawes did two sets and just brought Conor Oberst out to cover Bright Eyes for the entire second set. Previous Performance: B-
Moon Taxi - I've seen em a few times, most recently was at Hangout 2014, they did an entire RATM set but I only saw a few songs before I had to leave. These guys sound good and love playing their music and they do cool stuff like bringing out guests and doing the RATM cover set I mentioned. Past Performances: B+
Gramatik - September 2013 at The Ritz in Ybor, he was fun, danced my ass off and had a great time. If you like his albums and stuff, you'll surely like this show. Past Performance: B-
Dopapod - I've seen these guys a couple times at festivals (I think Bear Creek 2013 was one of those times) Dopapod is funky as fuck, just a really solid jam band. If you like funk, go this show and boogy down, you'll thank me later. Past Performances: B
My Morning Jacket (3x) - Don't go see this band at Bonnaroo. Stay at your tent, grab a drink, wander around, whatever you do just stay away. Grade: Double F-
hmm something seems fishy here.
Come on, help me out guys. Nearly every post is about how great they are, we need to clear out some space for ourselves. My desire to inform is no match for my need to get a good spot for this set.
Robert Plant & Sensational Space Shifters (Taste of Chicago '13): While important to recognize the living legends, and awesome to hear some "Led" live (although without Bonham I'll never be complete), his vocals were amiss and reviews accurately describe the performance as "a night of soft-rock". The acoustics at Grant Park aren't favorable; in conjunction with the bluesy-country (less Led's early bluesy feel), I left unimpressed. If you're looking for some Led power rocking, it likely will not be at this set; but a classic exploring the folky blues genre- go for it.
Ben Harper (solo) (Riviera, Chicago '13): A lengthyyyyyy acoustic set in a semi-intimate seating only venue, Ben explored a dozen stringed instruments for a 14 song setlist, interrupted by lengthy monologues, tangents, and stories. A talented live solo act, he seemed to lose command of the audience as he seemed to improvise (indecisively) the last quarter of the show. I would prefer to see him with a backing band.
Earth Wind & Fire (Ravinia Festival, Chicago '14): A typically relaxed outside venue with patrons setting up picnics across the lawn, EWF brought some serious FUNK off the bat and had the whole place jammin on their feet for the length of their set. Definitely awesome to see 5 year olds and 75 year olds grooving it out on the same lawn. Instrument diversity, this will be one for Rooers to funk with. Would you funk me? I'd funk me.
ODESZA (Wicker Park Fest, Chicago '14): With the added benefit that this (one of many summer Chicago street fests) took place at my front door, I had recently discovered ODESZA and was anxious to hear them live (with studio album on the way). Great performance on a small stage nestled between two walls of 3-flat apartments lining Milwaukee Ave, lots of sampling and energetic (pad) drumming. Best served hot with a side of corn.
BTBAM (Palladium, Worcester, MA '03): During my wonderful hardcore(?)/screamo/Boston "underground" developmental stage. While their music sometimes finds its way onto my workout mix, I likely wont be checking out their stage, even for nostalgia's sake. As advertised. Expect moshing.
That's it for me! I'm quacking excited to add to my list this year.
Bassnectar - Kanrocksas 2011, Midland theater 2012 - had fun, but not really into that type of electronic now so I doubt I'll see him unless I'm looking to "party": B- Slayer - Ozzfest 2004 - I was big in to metal for most of my youth. Heavy as you'd expect with lightning fast guitar solos. Maybe I'll stumble over to their set: B- Spoon - Liberty Hall 2014 - Very fun and sounds like their recordings cause they are pros. Will probably see them barring conflicts: A- STS9 - Kanrocksas 2011 - sounded great, but I was tired as they were closing out the 2nd day of 100 degree heat. Will definitely give them a shot this year: A- Ben Folds - only saw him at the Superjam and Elton John last year, will probably go see as it's my brother's #1: n/a Atmosphere - Granada Theater 2008, Beaumont Club 2009 - love Slug and Ant, been a while since I've been able to go to their shows so I'll be there: A Twenty One Pilots - KC Live 2014 - have a few catchy songs, but overall not my thing, won't go see: C- Courtney Barnett - Riot Room 2014 - Her second guitarist allows her to rock out more, her show in the bar was a blast, should work well on a larger stage, hopefully Thursday prime time: A Between the Buried and Me - El Torreon 2004 - opened for Dillinger Escape Plan and that was a crazy show as expected. I heard they don't play their older stuff live anymore though so I am maybe on this: B+ Phox - Riot Room 2013, 2014 - Very unique band. Monica is as talented as she is gorgeous. The band are all best friends and have fantastic on stage banter. I don't know if that will happen in front of a bigger crowd, but I know they'll make great music: A The Districts - Williamsburg music hall 2015 - Just saw them last week, fantastic band on the up and up: A Temples - Record Bar 2014 - Went on a whim by myself after a break up, cheered me up with some jams so I'm a loyal fan now, will see again: A-
Kendrick Lamar – Saw him while waiting in line for Alabama Shakes at Roo ’12. I wasn’t into it at all, but then again, I’m not a huge hip hop fan.
My Morning Jacket – One of my favorite bands on record, and easily my favorite live band. If you aren’t convinced by their albums, at their show should do the trick.
Alabama Shakes – As a band, fairly underwhelming. Brittney is the redeeming quality in the band and a total gem. I’m hoping the new album and a little more experience liven up the show.
The War On Drugs – Saw them at a local beer festival during the Slave Ambient cycle. Wasn’t as big of a fan of that album, but they still killed it live.
Twenty One Pilots – A really fun live band regardless what you think of them. I was a skeptic, they convinced me. A ton of energy and a very engaging front man.
Gary Clark Jr. – One of the best blues guitarists out there. He slays.
Punch Brothers – It took me about ½ hour to pick my jaw up off the floor after their set. Just astounding musicianship.
Dawes – I’m a huge fan, but I can see how someone who doesn’t love them could get bored at their set. Expect solid songs and a sing along with “When My Time Comes”.
Moon Taxi – Several shows with these guys, not one time where I’ve left disappointed. They will come with all guns firing if their last Bonnaroo show is any indication.
Houndmouth – Caught the tail end of their small set two years ago at Bonnaroo and fell in love with them. They have a lot of fun on stage and I love their songwriting.
Rhiannon Giddens – She is the best part of the Carolina Chocolate Drops, and her voice is worth the price of admission alone.
Strand of Oaks – Very solid rock show. Nothing to blow me away 3 years ago, but their new record is a different beast.
Phox – I could not love Monica Martin more. Her voice, the bands playfulness, the whole thing is pure entertainment. Go see them.
Bassnectar - 6 times, yes, 6 times. Omaha NE x2, Iowa City IA, Lincoln NE, Lawrence KS, Denver CO - look at life as if you were a puddle of water. You're flowing, you're flowing - and then Bassnectar starts playing Pink Elephants and all you see around you is the trippiest video of elephants tripping acid melting into each other and all you feel is the warmth of every human being that ever existed flowing through your veins. Add the energy of a crowd of ~ 20,000 people all moving in what seems to be a preplanned wave of smiles and energy. That's Bassnectar. That's insanity. (A+)
Mumford - Kansas City, KS - Absolutely epic energy, we travelled to KC on a whim and saw most of the show from on top of an apartment building a couple blocks away before we moved closer to the Ballpark, and in all reality, they sounded amazing - they make sure they sound as true as they can and it played so well! (A)
Ben Folds - Omaha NE - I was in high school and had just started listening to him, but the energy he exudes is amazing - he makes you want to stand up and start rocking out, and he gets the crowd involved and has you singing along - definitely a great show (A)
Brandi Carlile - Floyd, VA - drunkenly stumbled into her first set at Floyd Fest at the Garden Stage and was amazed, she has so much positivity and happiness when she sings - it was beautiful, we strolled in and got to the front and started just rocking out with everyone around us! (A)
Trampled By Turtles - Floyd VA - saw an acoustic set of theirs but it was awesome, not very memorable though (B)
Gramatik - Lincoln NE - Absolutely crazy glitchy dance fest - Must See (A+)
I've seen a few of the 2015 acts but I'm going to take a moment to focus on the Against Me! shows I've been to since sleepy up there is spreading LIEEEES, LIEEEEESSS!
Against Me! has put on some of the most memorable shows I have ever been to. The energy they exhibit on stage is tangible; it is obvious that they are having the time of their lives every time they play.
I highly, highly recommend stopping by to see them if you can avoid a scheduling conflict. Even if you don't know their music, you will leave the set as a fan. I convinced a buddy of mine to go to a show with me a few years ago. He's a big fan of metal, not typically into Against Me!'s style, and he is now a superfan.
Last time I saw them was in Indianapolis last year. Drove from Ohio, lost my shirt in the crowd, lost about ten pounds in sweat, had an absolute blast.
Check them out and you will not be disappointed.
Sink florida sink at roo 08 remains one of my favorite moments, I couldn't agree more with you about the stage presence and the enthusiasm.

Oh god - I actually saw Laura at a solo show a few years back before her transition. Very small venue with the stage only a couple feet off the ground, one security guard and no barrier. When she started playing Sink, Florida, Sink the crowd rushed the stage, guitar got unplugged and you just heard the whole room singing together. Amazing.
1/30: Cold War Kids
2/6: Cherub
4/22: The Mountain Goats
5/25: Laura Jane Grace "Killing Me Loudly"
5/31: The Decemberists
6/11-6/14: BONNAROO 2015
6/28: Against Me!
6/30: Against Me!
Twenty One Pilots: I admit, I absolutely LOVE these guys, despite what most other reviewers have said. I've seen them twice and the show was the same both times, but it was a blast anyway. I love their music and they're very high-energy. I'll be front row at Roo, haha.
Awolnation: I like these guys a lot, though their live shows leave something to be desired. I'll probably still see them at Roo because I enjoy their music. They're far less energetic on stage than I expected, though it has been a couple of years since I saw them.
I'm a little ashamed that those are the only two I've seen, but it's whatever.
Saw Sylvan Esso last night. It was lots of fun. Will be a great Thur. show.
Glad to hear this! I literally just bought tickets 15 minutes ago for their show in March in Columbus. They immediately old out a smaller venue, so they moved it to a larger one, opening up more tickets.
Kendrick Lamar: Okay I know he's been reviewed to death now but I still feel like writing. I saw him three times in 2013. First time at Bonnaroo. Honestly if that show was a tent show people wouldn't be complaining nearly as much. Imagine if that ASAP Rocky show was instead put in the middle of the day on the What Stage...how terrible would that have been? Same sort of scenario. It wasn't the right show for the main stage. But I was in the pit so I didn't care I still had a great time. It was one of those shows I didn't even realize people didn't like till I got home. I mean come on...act like you still didn't have a good time at that show Saw him a second time at Music Midtown with a live band and it was a much better show. Not only because of the live band, he also performed a lot better. Another notable part of the show, he went off stage for about ten minutes apparently because some kid kept shining one of those laser pointer things at the stage. Once security filled us in on what was happening the whole crowd started chanting "beat his @$$, beat his @$$!" Kendrick came back out laughing and was like "soooo did ya'll beat his @$$??". Me and Kendrick also had a moment when he performed ADHD (I was second row for that show). Then saw him a final time opening up for Kanye. It was a great show but not as memorable because I was far away in the seats when before I was towards the front looking directly at him. We were still getting crunk in the stands though. But overall I've never had a bad time at a Kendrick show. Sooooo A- for the Music Midtown, and Yeezus tour...and I'll just forgive his Bonnaroo show because I still had a great time. For his next shows though, I'd really like his band to get a bit tighter. Also...backup singers. He needs backup singers to sing those melodies instead of just having a backtrack. But of course if the Colbert and Saturday Night Live shows are any indication of what we're in for I think we'll be alright. It still hasn't sunk in for me yet....Kendrick is really headlining Bonnaroo
Has anyone seen Pallbearer live? I really love their studio albums, but I've heard mixed reviews about the vocals live.
They f*cking OWNED when I saw them last summer. Admittedly, I was hammered and don't remember how Deafheaven was but I'm pretty sure they blew them away. I'll be curious to see how it sounds on an outdoor stage though.
I saw them at Fun Fun Fun this past year and didn't have a problem with the vocals at all. Will definitely be at their set this year, as should you!
Well, I guess I'll be there. I'm guessing they'll have a similar Metalroo set up like last year. Pallbearer->Between the Buried and Me->Slayer.
Maybe, or Pallbearer might open up a tent one day a la Pelican a few years ago. If they do go the late night metal tent route again, I'd expect Slayer to go first. Sort of like last year where the biggest band (Mastodon) went first.
But if you enjoy their studio output, make sure you're there. I think the live vocal complaints were more in their early career (also sort of like Mastodon).
