Am I the only person that would be absolutely thrilled if my neighbor brought a circus tent?
Until rain displacement floods your campsite or the whole thing blows away taking your tents with it while damaging your vehicle with the stakes which are still tied up.
The whole point to this website/forum/community was to inform people on what to expect when they get to Bonnaroo for the first time.
So…..wouldn't it make sense for us to explain the possibilities of the worst in order to make someone think about their idea before they walk into it blindly?
I've never been a person of absolute "back patting"
I came to this site 9 years ago asking for advice about a festival that I'd never been to before. And the result was a family.
Ask the questions….get some answers….grow a family.
Lastly, if it takes up a 30' by 30' area, that means you have to have 6 parking spots involved, in a 3 spot wide by 2 row deep configuration.... ...On a side note- If you do end up doing this, for the love of God don't put it out in the fire lane.
Man, some of you guys assume the worst and that everyone goes nuts when they set up camp. We don't know that this tent is 30x30 when setup (maybe when flat?), or that it can't be folded or draped over to create walls or whatever, especially since it sounds like it is one piece and we already know it will require custom supports. And why would she put it up in the fire lane or anywhere she isn't supposed to? It sounds, effectively, like a big, heavy tarp, to me at least. Do you think they could use the arch to support it and camp there, or would that be bad?
Yeah, this really isn't that difficult to understand. A canopy of this size needs plenty of space for guy wires. Which will reach out well beyond 30X30 and it will need to do so in all directions to make the structure safe. Can you tell me were this would be possible without ending up in a fire lane or in a stranger's camp? I'll tell you were. Nowhere except maybe group camping. Even then you'd need a much larger group then she has to have room. So she's starting off with at least one uncontrollable variable that could ruin her idea before it begins. Telling her this is just being practical. I'd love it if she can make it work but I'm not going to be blindly optimistic.
Instead of whining about what others are saying, and failing at sarcasm, why don't you make some suggestions on how to actually do it?
Also - someone had mentioned the height of it. You may want to just shoot a message off to Bonnaroo peeps to see if this is something they'd allow or if they'd end up asking you to take it down. It would really suck for you to spend 6 months figuring out how to make it work to have someone come up to you as you're setting up and say you can't have it. You know?
I don't think they care about height. In 2012 I was camped across the street from a bunch of people who brought a shitload of scaffolding and hammocks and made a (surprisingly) structurally sound tower and hung the hammocks from under each level

In any case, I don't think candyenchanted said this thing is going to Bonnaroo for sure and going to take up whatever space it wants. I still say the common sense thing to do is figure it out 100% beforehand, and if it's awesome then do it, but if not go another route. We all have a lot of time left before we have to pack up and head out to the farm.
That's exactly why I said "I f it takes up a 30' by 30' area..." I'm letting her know what to expect SHOULD that be the case. I hope she can work it out- but it's an awful lot to bring out if it doesn't end up working out with the parking. Not going to lie- 2 years ago I saw this in guy bring a huge military style tent that covered about 10 RV spots... It looked awesome. But- It took them absolutely forever to set up, and a couple of the guys looked like they were about to die afterward. They obviously needed to work that out with their neighbors. But what if one of them had said absolutely no? What I'm sayin is there are so many factors to take into account.

I'm factoring everything in, guys. So don't sweat it. I have no idea just how big my group is yet. With friends changing their minds about going back this year, and friends considering their first Roo, and some friends possibly camping in access- I may end up with only 3 people (which means I wouldn't bring this thing) or I may end up with close to 20. I am considering groop, but can't do that until I have my final tally.
I know that guy lines take up a lot of room, and I'm taking that into account. Yes, the tent is about 30x30 laying flat- not set up. I also mentioned previously that I might consider making it smaller with some resewing. I have also considered that it doesn't have to be set up like you might imagine a large party tent would normally be set up, after all it's mine to do with as I see fit. I can cover our cars with it as well as our camp if needed. It's essentially just a very big tarp right now, that can be whatever I want it to be as long as it's stable.
I'm not looking to take over anyone else's space with it. I'm not trying to bring some huge structure that will take all of your tents with it should it get a big gust of wind. And I already plan to make sure that it's safe before I bring it, and would never bring it if it was a risk. No worries.
I guess I should also throw out there that's it's not really a circus tent. It's something that was given to me after I made mention of wanting a circus tent, and that's what it was called. It's just a standard pole tent with brightly colored stripes on the top. Again, there are no walls, so it's not going to turn into an oven... it's just a super big tarp that I'm trying to turn into some shelter.
I would have already tried to set it up at least once by now, but it has been raining all week. Maybe I can't turn this thing into shelter for Roo, and if I can't I'm not going to bring it. But maybe I can. I'm an experienced camper and I've built crazier things. The way I see it, it's an experiment in trial and error, and it's mostly numbers. Numbers have always been my strong suit. I think there is a good possibility that I can do it, so long as it doesn't break my bank. And with it at my disposal, I don't see any reason I shouldn't try. I'm NOT going into it blindly.

I bring a tent and an ez up but I make extra shade with tarps so I know what you are asking. I have had luck attaching poles or pvc pipe to vans or trucks and then using that to bungee the tarps up to make shade. you will need to be sure that you use cloth to insure that you don't scratch the cars etc. once you get the tarp somewhat lifted then you can take extra bungee cords and string them from the tarp to other objects around you such as other cars or other tents so that the tarp keeps its height and that it stays up well. the more bungee and string the better it will stay up. ive never used a piece as big as the one that you have but I would think tha tyou would just need more creativity. I put up my shade tent and my sleeping tent near my car. then I take two or three plain tarps and I cover the entire car and sleeping tent with the tarps. I attach the tarps to the front of my car under the hood and then all the way back to the shade tent. this creates a covered area for the sleeping tent between the shade tent and the car. then I use tent poles to lift the sides beside the car so that the sides are lifted up off of the car (so that I can get in and out of the car without moving the tarp every time) the result is that my car is shaded and my sleeping tent has extra shade and shelter from rain. after im done I hang sheets from the sides of the tent.
I would advise you that you are going to want to be sure that the area is tall enough to walk under. so if you drap it simply over some cars it will be much too low and you will get ill with it quickly. if you have to bend over all the time you are going to get sick of it. you can often attach bungee cords from the sides of tarps to trucks or vans for height. the little hooks on the bungees will hook easily into the corners where the doors or windows are without scratching the car at all. if someone had a very tall vehicle or if someone would put a pvc through their open sun roof and parked in the middle of this area then you would be able to lift the middle of the tarp up with a piece of pvc which would extend up from a truck or sunroof upward.
if you are worried about it being hot you could also cut slits in the sides once you get the entire thing in place so that the sides that drape toward the ground are more like curtains that can be pulled back and opened or closed in case of rain. its kinda hard to describe this but im actually really good at making tarp tents work using cars and poles and other tents even.....you can do it but you will need to practice with your actual set up before you go.
So what you are saying is this thread is a useless waste of time? Got it.
EDIT: Nevermind. I give up and will censor myself, since it is clearly impossible to construct a tent with a large tarp. And you don't have to waste your time, you know.
I think you should go for it! If you are handy and can construct a decent setup using anchor points on all the cars along with large high quality stakes and sturdy poles, then it could end up being pretty awesome! Of course, you should set it up somewhere prior to the festival(I doubt they'd let you bring in power tools) and ideally see how it performs on a windy day. Be careful, and post some pics if you are successful! (2015 will be my first Bonnaroo, but I am no stranger to makeshift camping setups)
