In light of a recent report that Apple will soon abandon music downloads (later denied, but undoubtedly containing a certain amount of inevitability), we thought we’d take a moment to update you on the state of Bandcamp’s business and our plans for the future.
Bandcamp grew by 35% last year. Fans pay artists $4.3 million dollars every month using the site, and they buy about 25,000 records a day, which works out to about one every 4 seconds (you can see a real-time feed of those purchases on our desktop home page). Nearly 6 million fans have bought music through Bandcamp (half of whom are younger than 30), and hundreds of thousands of artists have sold music on Bandcamp. Digital album sales on Bandcamp grew 14% in 2015 while dropping 3% industry-wide, track sales grew 11% while dropping 13% industry-wide, vinyl was up 40%, cassettes 49%… even CD sales grew 10% (down 11% industry-wide). Most importantly of all, Bandcamp has been profitable (in the now-quaint revenues-exceed-expenses sense) since 2012.
Subscription-based music streaming,* on the other hand, has yet to prove itself to be a viable model, even after hundreds of millions of investment dollars raised and spent. For our part, we are committed to offering an alternative that we know works. As long as there are fans who care about the welfare of their favorite artists and want to help them keep making music, we will continue to provide that direct connection. And as long as there are fans who want to own, not rent, their music, that is a service we will continue to provide, and that is a model whose benefits we will continue to champion. We have been here since 2008 and we mean to be here in 2028. Thank you!
*Bandcamp is not a download store, and we very much embrace the convenience of streaming. When you buy music on Bandcamp, whether that’s in digital or physical form (30% of sales on Bandcamp are for vinyl and other merchandise), you not only get the pleasure of knowing you’re supporting the artist in a direct and transparent way, you also get instant, unlimited streaming of that music via our free apps for Android and iOS, as well as an optional, high-quality download. Your purchase is about direct support, ownership and access, whether that access takes the form of a stream, download, or both. So please consider joining us in never using “streaming” as shorthand for “subscription-based music.” The former is an inevitable technological shift, the latter is an unproven business model.
thought it was a good read. i enjoy using bandcamp, the prices are great, i can download in flac, overall its just a great platform. glad they are doing well.
A guy came into the bookstore today and asked for a book on coding. I asked him what language and he was very puzzled. So I just took him up to the programming section, and when I asked him what he wanted to make, he said he wanted to build a new streaming app. I can't say I have a lot of faith in his idea at this point in time. I don't know what he wants to name it, but when it comes out make sure to download it because this kid's got a lot of moxie.

Set 1 night 3 ended with Tommy Hamilton of American Babies doing a great double guitar lead with Barber on Astronaut. Fn right. 3? 4? 5 more sets to go? I don't know. It's a 20 minute hiatus and I'm on coffee cup 2 in the event this shit goes to 4am again.

Bundle the pay-per-view and MP3s together and save some loot. Pre-order now! UMBowl IV pay per view is also now available for pre-order.
Late to the game but Uphoric Channel is live streaming some of sweetwater 420 this weekend on their YouTube channel. It's about a half hour into set 1 of Widespread Panic. Yesterday was Dirty Heads, moe., Trey Anastasiao Band. Today was Anders Osborne, Slightly Stoopid and Widespread Panic for 3:30 (including set break). Tomorrow is Ween at 4-6 EDT and then Widespread Panic from 6:30 to 10:00.
This Saturday night @ 7:30pm CDT, Lettuce (via nugs.net) will be streaming Rage Rocks which should have Ghostface Killah, George Porter, Jr., John Scofield, Marcus King and Cyril Neville along with a set from Turkuaz.
LCD Soundsystem is doing a free broadcast tomorrow (Thursday 5/18/17) on YouTube from Google's I/O. Air time is estimated to be about 9:00pm Pacific (so midnight Eastern).
It's posted in the Beale Street thread, but LCD is about 10 minutes into their live set at Google at the moment. "We aren't for everybody, but we will try to do our best for everybody." Sounds good so far and I'm just a casual watcher.
Aphex Twin: www.nts.live/ ^^ s.o.s. says it's being streamed live from London sometime Saturday 6/3
Primavera Sound starts streaming this Thursday at 1:00pm EDT on redbulltv.com or one of their apps. I can't find the schedule so far, but I'll keep looking for it.
As for the remaining Redbulltv.com festival schedule for this year:
Primavara Sound - June 1 thru 4 beginning at 1:00pm EDT on Thursday
Bonnaroo Music - June 8 thru 12 beginning at 8:00pm EDT on Thursday June 8.
Demon Dayz - June 10 thru 11 beginning at 2:00pm EDT.
Electric Daisy Carnival Las Vegas - June 16 thru 19 beginning at Friday, June 16 @ 11:30pm EDT
Roskilde - June 28 thru July 2 begins streaming Wednesday 6/28 at 1:30pm EDT
Montreaux Jazz Fest - June 30th (Friday) beginning at 6:00am
Here is the Pitchfork Stage live stream times (Eastern Daylight) for the parts of Primavera they are streaming. iCat apparently is going to participate as well, but I can't read foreign languages well enough to figure that shit out. Brooklyn Vegan reported about 10 minutes ago that the Red Bull full live stream would be released soon.
Barcelona’s Primavera Sound festival happens today (May 31) through Sunday, June 4. If you’re like us and aren’t there, you can still watch live as they’ll be live-streaming much of it from June 1 – 4. Primavera is promising over 50 hours of “multi-channel transmission” via Red Bull TV. While the livestream schedule has yet to be announced, it starts June 1 at 1 PM EDT. You can watch below.
So just to make sure I'm doing my time zone math correctly, it looks like Aphex Twin is supposed to start at 3:55 pm Eastern?
Fucking pumped for this set.
Check out the new venue they built where Aphex is playing:
"We’re proud to present our brand new second indoor main stage arena “The Barn”. Headlined by Aphex Twin, The Barn is a gigantic hangar-like construction with a state of the art high-powered sound system and one of the most technologically advanced lighting rigs around. Big enough to rival the main stage, The Barn will be an unmissable spectacle!"
I wish Field Day was streaming their whole festival, especially all the shows at The Barn.
This is the lineup for just that stage:
Aphex Twin Nina Kraviz Nicolas Jaar Jon Hopkins (DJ) Moderat Marcel Dettmann Dekmantel Soundsystem
And then after Aphex, Primavera is streaming Sleep and then King Gizzard at 7 and 8 pm Eastern.
Tomorrow is going to be a good day for live music enjoyed remotely.
I don't know man. I couldn't find the time. I'm central so if you are able to confirm that EDT time, I'll adjust for here. All I know was it was a collaboration with Weirdcore who he works with sometimes.

According to the Field Day schedule, Aphex Twin is scheduled to start at 20:55. The fest is in London, which is GMT +1. Eastern is GMT -4 right now with daylights savings. So London should be 5 hours ahead of EDT.
20:55 - 5:00 = 15:55 = 3:55 pm EDT
So assuming there isn't a last minute schedule change, and things run on time, I think that should be correct.
Personally, I think I'm just going to start watching an hour early just in case something changes. I'll be sure and post in here if I see it start.
Yeah. I'm gonna crank it on when Primavera airs so I'll be linked in. Today has been pretty fucking excellent. RTJ, Tycho, Sinkane (excellent surprise for me), Black Angels and coming up the fn Descendents. Haha. I saw them in like 1984 with Angry Red Planet and some other hardcore band I can't remember. Then I saw them again in the late 90s with their other project All. Disco Biscuits Night 3 later, and set 2 last night was sick as shit. My daughter turns 21 at midnight so I'm only getting set 1 today but Red Rocks tomorrow night should be show of the weekend. Plus tomorrow was still TBD for channel 2 at Primavera so they might bring some more killer shit for the afternoon. And Aphex Twin.
Also I forgot I wanted to see Joey Purp and King Krule tomorrow on the Pitchfork bonus Primavera stream too. Shit. I better have some caffeine
Channel 1 (CEST -5, sorry if wrong) 4:05 Slim Cessna's Auto Club 4:55 Weyes Blood 5:45 Songhoy Blues 6:45 Angel Olsen 9:00 King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard
Channel 2 8:00 Sleep No other shows posted on schedule for Channel 2. However, their website shows these which I think are in Central Time 2:50 Vaadat Charagin 4:45 Arab Strap 5:50 Seu George 6:00 Sleep
They also show these different times than the original schedule: Songhoy Blues 2:05, Slim Cessna 2:55, Angel Olsen 4:45, King Gizzard 7:00 So anyone interested might just go to the channels around noon today to see which schedule they're going by.
^^^^^Note that they have been starting around noon and replaying for 24 hours so these sets may stream earlier first then repeat.
