I work with the theory that this is a product of rampant nationalism and the fact that towns were still lynching folks and banning them pools 50 years ago. And you know, that's within the lifetime of at least a shit ton of current parents and grandparents across this country. "Fear of a Black Planet" came out in the late 80's and it was seen as a great album of social justice, but rarely on the face value that it's a true fear across this country. It's psychological discomfort in having "Jim Crow", "slavery", "voting rights", "privilege" (often misplaced as wealth and not the ability to not be profiled), and those annoying civil rights leaders who say things against colonialism and the profits of slavery.
edit: This heavily has to do with the discomfort in the deconstruction of patriarchy. All across this land are churches, religions, and just people who believe in a certain system for everyone - and when we are not in our place, it scares the fuck out of them

I'll touch it! I'm pretty drunk right now so this will not be pretty and probably not intelligent. The construct of race vs. race is an illusion. THAT is a distraction from the bigger issue of those who have and those who have not. In the early days before this country became a country white people were sent here as indentured servants. Properly white English folks who owed debts were indentured to wealthy families in order to work off those debts in the colonies. The promise given was that if you worked off your debt you'd be given a plot of land. Until you did so you were for all intents and purposes a slave. White indentured servants were given greater privileges than black slaves because if you treated them equally they could conspire together and revolt as a single class. The "Have Not" crowd. IMO the true insidious nature of racism is to distract simple minded people from figuring out who the real enemy is.

People are people. Black, White, Hispanic, Asian, everyone should be treated with respect and consideration. The problem is that this country was built on the idea that people of color, especially black people, are somehow of lesser worth because they were brought here to do the bidding of white people. This idea was perpetuated for literally hundreds of years and people have only begun to realize that this is wrong within the past 60-70 years or so. Think about that. Your grandparents more than likely remember when black people couldn't go into the same establishments as white people. When you think about it that way it's pathetic, sad, and most of all infuriating.
I'm not black. I'm not white, but I don't look Hispanic. Just because I'm not black does not mean that I can't be offended by the words and actions of other people who display their ignorance. I literally had to walk out of thanksgiving dinner this past year because the conversation that was taking place. I have accepted that some people are so hard headed that they will not change their views. But that sure as hell doesn't mean I have to listen to it. When I see my 19 year old brother expressing some of the views he's picked up from my ignorant, stupid ass step-dad it honestly hurts. It hurts that he makes racist jokes and thinks it's ok "because he has a black friend" or makes gay slurs and thinks that's ok because his dad said it. It makes me sad that he's growing up with these views and makes me wonder how I turned out the way I did and he the way he did. But my other brother is 12, and I'm making sure that he understands that comments and actions like that aren't ok. I will walk out of a family discussion because they're wrong. I'll be offended, and make it known that I'm offended, because of comments that are being made. Just because "shit happens" doesn't mean it's ok and it doesn't mean that you should just let it go. It means that you need to say something. Not saying something is how the idea perpetuates into other generations and it's what halts any notion of progress. So yes, be offended and make it fucking known. Because if you don't express your disapproval it's just going to continue.
