I might end up volunteering for this. I share the same underwhelmed feeling, but there are still plenty of acts I'd want to see and I live in the city. I just can't afford to drop $300 on a lineup that doesn't blow me away. Does anyone have experience with their Volunteer program?

This honestly looks like what would happen if I booked a festival. That top four is insane, fantastic undercard, great city. Just got paid today as well. Based Friday.
They absolutely nailed rap this year. Kanye, Joey Badass, Bronson, Mac Miller, Big Boi, Vince Staples, Vic Mensa, De La Soul, Miguel (bit of a stretch calling him rap). Very impressed on that end.
I feel like they're usually pretty good about the rap acts the book at this festival.
Also not crazy sure why everyone is underwhelmed again. It does suck know the headliners they WERE going for that dropped out. But once again this is a collection of groups that most people either like or love now a days.. Are there honestly festivals out there that you people are going to, that where every act you are going to see will be a new experience for you??
A big fan of gov ball and was preaching gov ball all last year and once again i think they came out an put a pretty dope lineup for being a 2nd tier festival. LCD is no longer a 'unique' get, and calvin harris people agree is huge but pretty meh. What other fest is getting Kanye this year? or the strokes? or robyn?

itrainmonkeys I know you didn't ask me but I live in the East Village and I can't see how I skip it even though I've already seen everyone on this lineup who I like excluding Bob Moses. Most of the them I'm excited to see again.

Slightly underwhelmed but only in the sense that every year thus far I've felt like I couldn't miss the whole weekend, and this year I know I'll be satisfied with a one day Kanye ticket. It'll be a nice activity for my regular spring NY trip. Definitely agree that this isn't the fest for regular concert goers, but awesome for people trying to one stop shop.
Kanye likely playing a bunch of new songs from SWISH beats most headliners this year.
I don't know about that. If SWISH is like MBDTF-era Kanye, then sure. Sounds fun. If he's not also doing a massive tour, where you can see him on his own, even better. But if SWISH stays true to the underwhelming material he's put out lately, and/or follows in the vein of the truly overrated Yeezus, then I'd disagree. I'm as big of a Kanye stan as anyone here, and I was just telling someone today that for the first time since he started making music, I'm not really that excited for the new album.

We really have no idea what the album will sound like at this point, but Kanye as a headliner in general sure beats Mumford, Guns N Roses, Calvin Harris, The Weeknd, and all the other headliners so far.

you do realize you're posting on a message board of people who go to first tier festivals every year, right?

I agree with you on everything but GNR. In a vacuum, I'd choose seeing Kanye over seeing GNR, but in reality, the idea of seeing a GNR reunion beats yet another Kanye show each and every time for me.
Considering Kanye's relatively great reputation as a live performer and Axl Rose's poor reputation in general, I'm not so sure.

I've volunteered the last two years and I intend to again this year. My experience has been pretty great. The supervisors were pretty flexible with my friends an I. I did my shifts during the festival and all of them in the morning. You have ~5 hours of work and then you have the rest of the day to do whatever. Over the last two years I've missed maybe 3 acts because of my shift time. I've done artist hospitality, Activities and games, and Greeting. The only thing about the morning shift that sucks is that the ferry/bus doesnt run in the AM. If you're from the NYC/LI area like I am, I think it's very worth it. Hope this helps

Not to get into all of this again, but Axl was a great performer for a long time, up until the last 5 years really. Part of the excitement about GnR is that a lot of people think it signals that he's serious about getting his shit together again.

No i get that. It's just that at this point, almost every lineup could be considered "underwhelming" until a lineup finally gets Prince or Daft Punk or Portishead or something insane no one has seen. Until then we're all going to see the same acts everywhere and we should be happy if there are 30+ acts on a lineup that you want to see. Everyone is just too spoiled with Festivals to actually enjoy any lineup anymore.
What would've made this line up an amazing A+ lineup?
Said it last year say it again, and makes more sense this year but.... GOV BALL ALL DAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Agreed. While the GNR reunion is such a rare spectacle that would be cool to see, truth is Im a much bigger fan of Kanye than I am of that Appetite album. I think in terms of headliners this year the only one more exciting than Kanye is Roo getting Pearl Jam.
Considering Kanye's relatively great reputation as a live performer and Axl Rose's poor reputation in general, I'm not so sure.
Eh, could be. But either way, I'll see Kanye again, over and over again if I so choose. I'm more excited to take a shot and see if GNR pulls together something great, than I am seeing Kanye when I'm sure I can see him in a year or so.
If anything, this may be one of the last chances to see Kanye like this. He's clearly not as involved in his music anymore, and he didn't even do a massive tour behind MBDTF. SWISH may mirror that album tour cycle considering the massive tour behind Yeezus.

True, or it could means he's like many other old-school rockers cashing in on some quick checks.

Right, or not. It's a gamble, but the pay off could be really great.

Isnt GNR setting out on a normal tour? the reunion just doesnt seem as special to me if that happens. Ill just buy a ticket at my local amphitheater and see them. No one has heard anything about a Kayne tour this could be a one off or one show in a handful.
I'm aware I'm gonna be told how wrong I am, but Yeezus is one of my favorite Kanye Albums. I find it incredibly listenable, and it was the only CD in my car for a very long time. Music is subjective, but I've never agreed with the hate that album got.

I havent really listened to The Killers in years, but when the rumor of them headlining popped out a few days ago I started to revisit those first albums. Damn they've suddenly become one of my most anticipated sets. Hot Fuss was such a fun album. Not to mention how huge this song sounds live:

The rumor on GnR is that they're playing football stadiums and tickets will cost what a full on festival pass costs.
Honestly not trying to compare the two, Kanye and GnR are both very good grabs.

That album got a lot of hate? Thats my second favorite Ye album behind Dark Fantasy. When I go to the gym On Sight, Black Skinhead, Blood on the Leaves and I'm In It are my go to songs to get pumped up haha
