Do you not think EDM in general has been changing within the past two years? I don't think it's a festival thing, but the industry itself. Deep house/trop house/melodic house is now what progressive/big room was.
Definitely, not saying get rid of all EDM. Just cut the cheese. Alot of shitty acts in that genre. Happy with the bit that is on this lineup. Jamie xx had the best electronic release last year IMO.
Did the Deadmau5 fiasco from 2015 have an effect on EDM acts for the future?
yes, phosphorescent and sky ferreira were on the crossword. they had to drop out. that's why they gave up on the stupid crossword and hadn't updated in weeks. let's move on.
How would you rank this years fest compared to previous Gov Ball lineups?
Still digesting this years. I like it more the more I look at it. Been waiting to see killers and death cab for a while so that'll be special to me. Excited for another chance at Ye...last time he performed in 13 he was like in the crowd for half the performance and I couldn't see him from my back spot......Also not an EDM fan so no disappointment on that end for me.

@daytime Goth - I believe it's better to have a balanced lineup, for the demographic you are catering to. This lineup is just fine for the demo. I believe this is a faily balanced lineup.
If you have a top heavy fest, the undercard lacks. This is a solid undercard. Solid top line - Solid undercard. And, I could care less about 'Ye.

I'd rank them: 2014 > 2016 > 2015 > 2013
Tough to decide between '13 and '15. I liked 2013's headliners more, but 2015 had a crazy good undercard. I also didnt include the first two years because now the fest is on a whole other level.
I don't want it to go away entirely, but I'm ready to move away from booking the same acts at every fest to fill a quota.
Calvin Harris aside, Coachella's Sahara tent offerings are also much better this year than they have been in the past 3-4.
Agreed there. There's actually some newcomers this year, and not the recycled Alesso, David Guetta, Dillon Francis nonsense.
Plus Okebochee has a pretty dope electronic undercard.
Of course in two years festivals will probably have blown this out too and everyone will have special tents dedicated to generic sushi-restaurant house.

Jamie XX is great. I was hoping he was that J_ _ _ _ _ _ on the crossword!
I have two specific questions about the festival, and I've always trusted the members of this board more than just asking reddit.
1. They schedule dueling headliners, but it's not as predictable as the top lines of Lollapalooza, correct? It won't be scheduled as one of 1-3 up against one of 4-6 every night? And, are those headliner slots typically scheduled for the exact same times, or staggered?
2. How are the regular (non-Super) VIP viewing areas? The wife and I are tiny, so the placement of the VIP areas makes a huge difference to us. Are they Which stage unbelievable, What stage meh, or somewhere in between?

If we weren't getting married in August, I think the fiance and I would make this the year. Yeah, there's lots of regulars/repeats, but the majority of them are great. Plus those Kanye tracks from earlier today (and all the other one-offs he's released since Yeezus) I think are pointing to a great set.
Anyone have a spare thousand bucks and some personal days they wanna give me? Being Canadian, I'd basically have to sell my left nut to be able to afford a weekend in NYC right now.

Yeah it's hard to predict who will compete with headliners. In 2014 Outkast, who were billed #1, were up against Damon Albarn, who was something like #12. Last year Deadmau5 (#3) was up against Ryan Adams #8.
They basically are slotted at the exact same times, with the non main stage act getting a little less time. I remember when Damon finished his set, I walked over to Outkast's stage and was still able to catch like 4 more songs before they were done.
2015 | Fleetwood Mac, Father John Misty, Bleachers, Wussy, Walk the Moon (x2), The Black Keys, Kacey Musgraves, Old Crow Medicine Show, The Avett Brothers, Shakey Graves, twenty one pilots (unfortunately), The Front Bottoms, Snoop Dogg, The Rolling Stones, Future Islands, alt-J, Courtney Barnett, The Gaslight Anthem, Com Truise, Girl Talk, Run the Jewels, Modest Mouse, Kendrick Lamar, Danny Brown, Broods, Brandon Flowers, Sam Smith, Goo Goo Dolls

I agree, just have no idea who else they would put up against them.
Don't think GovBall goes for the low hanging fruit of Beck v Kanye, but maybe Kanye is completely unopposed. Could put Chet v Killers and Robyn v Strokes then.

I'm actually only familiar with Damian Lazarus down there. Who would you recommend checking out? Edit: saw your post above, plus found a Coachella forums page discussing it. Sweet.
Does Gov Ball usually put their biggest headliner on Saturday? Really want to see Kanye and Robyn, hoping they're both Saturday so I can grab a day pass. When do they usually announce the daily lineup?
Really surprised more people aren't geeked about Bat for Lashes being on the bill. That's a pretty huge get for the bottom half of the lineup.
Don't really get the people saying his lineup is "safe". Sure gov ball booked a decent amount of acts that have already played the music festival but this lineup is deep. So many good acts in that bottom half - Bat For Lashes, Thundercat, Vic Mensa, Vince Staples, Bully, Torres, etc etc. and even the acts that have played a lot of festivals the past few years are exciting - dunno about any of you but I will never get tired of seeing Courtney Barnett live.
Really glad Eagles of Death Metal are on the bill. That'll be one of my most anticipated sets of the weekend fo sho. Hopefully their sound will be better than when I saw them back in September.
