In honor of Beebee and Shuck's sacrifice I'm now going to watch a movie from Greece called Singapore Sling with the tagline "The man who loved a corpse." About a man apparently named Singapore Sling? It's him and "mother" and "daughter". What characters. This is going to be very great I'm sure.

also terrifier 2 was....ok. goddamn it was just so bloody and gory, but they do a good job making it campy at times, which i like. big no on the weird clown kid tho.

#20. Erotic Games of a Respectable Family (1975): Somehow, this was the first giallo I've caught all month. Somehow, this was also the second Italian movie with attempted incest in it I watched back to back. Honestly, I liked this one way more than I thought I would in spite of its almost cartoonish characterizations, it takes itself very seriously, which was sort of a relief after watching two very silly ones (albeit one knowing, one...less knowing). Donald O'Brien gives probably a way better performance than that character deserves and there's enough intrigue going on with the plot that when it gets to its five twist endings, somehow I only managed to see see one of them coming. Not as sexy as the title promises, not as violent as the genre would imply, but there is plenty of bad dancing to diegetic music to keep you entertained.
Also, because SFA deserves better than a two sentence plot summary instead of a review: Burial Ground was...something. Had to turn away in some parts honestly because although the gore was extremely over the top and extremely fake, it was still extremely there, and I'm still not a huge fan of that it turns out. (Also, something about the puke-colored bile blood the zombies had was genuinely revolting, so kudos to the effects guys for that.) However, if I was at a party and our guest curator Super Furry Animal put that on, I'd always have an absolute blast with it. The plotting is barely there, the dub is great in a bad anime kind of way and also takes out a lot of sound effects, and the soundtrack essentially consists of one Vangelis knockoff repeated over and over again. RIYL extreme close ups followed by super fast zoom outs. which of course, I do.

Prime Evil(1988)- I haven't been so disappointed in a long time. 20 minutes in and I was hooked. I thought this was going to be the story of Sister Angela, the undercover nun in an ancient devil worship cult in Manhattan. Sadly it's mostly a bunch boring genre bullshit like a meathead going around kidnapping women.... to be nude during the protagonist's ceremony? I don't know. Pointless and lame. So pissed. Sister Angela was so cool. She smashed a ceramic Jesus with a hammer and burned her nun cloths in front of the Satanists. Badass. 4 stars for Ang. 1 star for the rest.
The cult leader told Angela "mhuhahaha. I'll get you next time" after she stabbed the muppet/devil and the cult all turned into warty ghouls. Awful.
Now Bloody Sect(Spain 1983)is on. I’m 8 minutes in and can tell this is the insane eurotrash cinema that I love.
#21. Trouble Every Day (2001, Shudder) - judging by reviews I’ve seen a lot of people like this which puts me square in the minority. I go back and forth between “Am I too dumb to get this?” and “What the fuck was Claire Denis on about here?” The movie hints constantly that Beatrice Dalle and, later,
are affected by some sort of grand conspiracy the background scientists are researching, a conspiracy whose purpose is never made explicit. I’d be okay with that if whatever that conspiracy was is the metaphor the entire movie hinges on. Is it supposed to be commentary on sexual violence? The commitments and sacrifices required for marriage? Private obsessions ruining public facing relationships? All of the above? There’s no satisfactory conclusion and I’m that’s the intent, but I don’t think you can pull that off in a movie that features two parallel and pretty unsettling rape and murder scenes . Or one with a Vincent Gallo cum shot, for that matter.
And, in Europe, women’s secret desires to be lesbians (as told by male directors).
What about a European movie...directed by a woman...about women's, uh, overt lesbian desires to be with their girlfriend?
#22. Knocking (2021, Shudder): If you read a summary it sounds like it's going to be a jumpscare heavy movie but I think you'll enjoy it more knowing it's not. However, even for a sub-80 minute movie with a tense premise, this thing still meanders from time to time. I don't know, though, I still found it pretty interesting.
Also, points for making a pretty unambiguous ending feel pretty ambiguous!
#23. The Funhouse (1981, Criterion): A pretty straightforward slasher that gets a big boost from how creepy that fucking fairground is, from its motley crew of absurd carnies to its (apparently real!) sideshow animals. The atmosphere definitely enhances the jump scares, which are shockingly effective in spite of being telegraphed incredibly far in advance! (Side note: there was kind of a shocking lack of blood in this?) Not my favorite from Tobe, but pretty good.
#24. Opera (1987, Shudder): After watching a couple kind of shittily made Italian movies with terrible dubs, it's nice to watch a really well made Italian movie with a terrible dub. What can I say? That Argento guy is pretty good and does some pretty cool stuff! For example, I'm thinking about how the scene with the cosutmer opens with a shot of a feather blowing before the camera unexpectedly rotates 90 degrees around, and later features a shot edited to pulse like a heartbeat. The style is the draw, but the violence is pretty unique too; eye horror always makes me squeamish and this did the trick! Also, I appreciated Betty's giant CD player version of a meditation app. edit: can't believe I forgot to mention the great and hilarious touch of Mara being completely out of frame in the beginning.

Random thoughts on some of this shit.
Speak No Evil (2022 Denmark)[/b] - A movie about how Danish people are sticks-in-the-mud and the Dutch are cool as shit. You know those annoying people that constantly yell at the screen and ask a thousand questions? This movie was made to give them a heart attack. An examination of the limits of social niceties and just how much people are willing to put up with before risking unpleasantness. For the majority of the movie the film works incredibly well at balancing this. Making it somewhat plausible that most of this could be miscommunication and, later, crossing personal barriers because of drink, etc. But the audience of course knows this isn't the kind of movie where things are going to a good place. And, for me, I felt the film falls apart as the danger ramps up. It's just too unbelievable. Not even saying the protagonists had to get it all right and make all the right calls but the filmmakers make them look like complete fucking idiots by the end. This seems to be getting a lot of comparisons to Funny Games and the main difference I see is the protagonists' actions at least make sense within the logic of Funny Games. The point a character "gives up" is also understandable both in context and the meta-narrative the audience is in on. I just don't buy into it in Speak No Evil. Still a good movie but it's getting a little too much praise in my opinion.
The Cremator ( Czechoslovakia 1969) - Fantastic. I typically stay away from horror films set during WW2 or the holocaust but this is really a precursor to those events. It's also just as relevant today as fascism rises again. Watch this shit. It's worth your time. The lead actor is just insane.
Lisa and the Devil (1973 Italy)[/b] - Not my favorite Bava but some visually splendid gothic nightmare fuel. To give a modern comparison. This is like watching an episode of Twin Peaks: The Return. You enjoy the ride and have no idea what most of it means. Telly Savalas is having a blast chewing up scenery.
Bloody Sect (1982 Spain)- This is awesome garbage. What surprised me was the usually b-movie highlights aren't the best part of this Rosemary's Baby wannabe. Although there are some whacky kill scenes. The melodramatic subplot with the batshit ex-wife is scored with organ music from a 50s soap opera. It’s hilarious. Extra points for the devil baby that they spent maybe 5 bucks on.
She Killed in Ecstasy (1971 Germany/Spain) - A doctor is driven to suicide after his "not eugenics" eugenics research is rejected by his medical board and they call him names repeatedly. His widow vows revenge on the 4 members of the board. Using her good looks to lure them to bed and kill them (she does a little penis stabbing too). Luckily the female on the board is into chicks which makes it much easier for the widow to kill her with ecstasy(reuniting the ladies from Vampire Lesbos.... meow). Ohh and she kills her with a blow-up pillow. She captures the last survivor and ties him to a chair. But disrobes and rubs around on him a bit so the title of the movie makes complete sense. This movie is somewhat elevated by a good score, a little dash of surrealism and Soledad Miranda's magnetic presence but it's pretty much a forgettable exploitation movie.
A Quite Place to Kill (1970 Italy) - Umberto Lenzi tends to make fun ass giallos. This is one of his better ones. Great cinematography utilizing the sunny locations. All these people are kinda awful so it's fun to see the double crosses, etc. The best part for me was the shower scene with Carrol Baker. Instead of being like "ohh, nice pair" I was thinking "those are the boobs of the evil grandmaw from Kindergarten Cop."
The Hole in the Ground (2019 Ireland) - The dogshit in the yard.
The Shiver of the Vampires (1971 France) - My third viewing of a film by pervert socialist Jene Rollin. This one has one of the most unflattering sex scenes I've seen in years. So it was 3 girl- 1 guy group act and it was a good while before anyone made a motion that indicated it came from a human being involved in an act of sexual intimacy. Two of the girls where tangled up doing like wax-on/wax-off motions on each others bellies. The male actor might have been a virgin? I'm not sure but he was doing simulated missionary and looked like a seesaw. Like all his weigh was on this poor woman and you could clearly see his balls flopping on top of her leg. It also went on for waaaaaaaaaaaaaay too long. And it never showed these people again. I guess the point was vampires have orgies. Easily the worst of the Rollin stuff I've seen so far.

Halloween Kills - Baffling in numerous ways. Most character arcs are a mess. Even Myers is doing weird shit like letting this guy be his kid brother. I don't fucking know. I didn't hate it I guess. Not a big Halloween person so I'm not offended by it or anything. Most of the franchise is garbage anyway. I think DGG had some good ideas but like zero of them panned out starting about halfway into Halloween Kills. The killing spree was pretty damn wild. Will probably forget I watched it in a week or so.

Rewatching Barbarian and realizing how much I like Justin Long doing crazy out there horror stuff. This, Tusk, and Jeepers Creepers are all unique movies that have varying levels of quality but he always gives his all. Looks like he's going to be in the Goosebumps series coming out, too.

Fuck did I love barbarian and can't wait to see what Zach cregger follows up with. There are so many small but smart choices for a modern horror, specifically with mobile phones and internet and junk. But there's a lot of good stuff in this flick. And also subversions of expectations throughout.
Rewatching Barbarian and realizing how much I like Justin Long doing crazy out there horror stuff. This, Tusk, and Jeepers Creepers are all unique movies that have varying levels of quality but he always gives his all. Looks like he's going to be in the Goosebumps series coming out, too.

Pan's is the preference, tickets at Cinematheque are only 14 bucks. Only drawback is that it is up in Cleveland.
