So it's apparently been since June of 2009 that I've logged into these forums, so...hello!
Secondly: The last time I've been to Bonnaroo is (you guessed it), 2009. Me and my wife (she was my girlfriend back in 2009) will be attending Bonnaroo again in 2016. What will the biggest change/shock be from the last time we were there 7 years back?
I can think of a couple:
1) The price -- I think we paid $209 for GA pre-sale 2) Feeling freakin' old this time around -- I was 23 and 24 when I went in 2008, and 2009, respectively -- compared to being 31 this time around 3) Smartphones, smartphones, smartphones. In 2008-9, they weren't a big deal. I can't imagine a field full of phones glued to people's faces when it's just so much greatness to take in around you.

The worst thing is probably that the art of such and such is gone and has been replaced by a water slide. They do more with the pods now though (art-wise). You'll find that the crowd is younger than it used to be, but there are still plenty of people of all ages. The kids roo area is still hilarious. The lineups are more diverse than they used to be, but you probably know that without having gone. They added screens to the tents. Uhhhh, I think that's it.

There were a lot of older jam fans back when the dead headlined, and panic had been around for a bit, their fanbase had some age to it as well. But maybe it just seemed that way because everyone was older than me in the first couple years.

Screens on tents added last year. Big improvement.
Sound on Which is still the most erratic of any stage at any festival. Either so loud you can hear it in day parking or so quiet you need to be in the pit to connect to the music.
They moved the Cinema tent to the other side of the Comedy tent. Silent Disco moved to in front of the Comedy tent. Where Silent Disco used to be they put a Christmas Barn, which is just some weird thing. nevermind I was corrected, nothing where silent disco is, Christmas barn was always some kind of barn.
In terms of crowds I personally don't think it skews too much younger. Maybe my perspective is skewed by other fests, like when I went to Buku for a couple of years that crowd was clearly much younger than me. At Bonnaroo there are plenty of older looking folks walking around.
Cell phones don't really bother me, except maybe the occasional person taking a video that is blocking my view, but they have to be in a very specific location for that to happen.
Centeroo is still always super crowded. I went to Roo in 03 and 04, and have been back 12-15, and 12-15 all felt equally crowded to me.
Last year there were overall less shows. Can't remember the exact breakdown, I know somebody did an analysis, but generally sets started later in the day, gaps between sets were longer, sets themselves were not longer, and there were less LN options.
I still maintain that the kids are the same age. I've just gotten older.
Through the years I've gone from being on the younger side 17-18) to the older side (29) of the crowd. But I definitely think it is skewing younger. There were a lot of older jam fans back when the dead headlined, and panic had been around for a bit, their fanbase had some age to it as well. But maybe it just seemed that way because everyone was older than me in the first couple years.
It's absolutely insane to think that I'll be one of the oldest people at Bonnaroo Live music is still totally my scene though, and I'm sure there's plenty of people (like yourself) that were in folks' shoes at the show now and just came of age as Bonnaroo grew each year.

So it was mentioned that show sets are skewing shorter. One of my favorite memories was MMJ's four-hour set in the downpouring rain in 2008 -- absolutely epic. I feel like I'll never see a show of that length / that was specifically catered to Bonnaroo itself and not just a run-of-the-mill set. Am I accurate in saying that these "epic" shows don't occur anymore?

Moe Umphrey's McGee sound Tribe Sector 9 pretty lights have all played long sunrise sets since 2008. String Cheese Incident had a pretty long set on which too. even the Skrillex Superjam seem to go a really long time.

You definitely won't be one of the oldest on The Farm. Hell, I'll be just 'bout 32 by next 'Roo! Now after nine in a row it definitely takes a bit more of a toll when it comes to drinkin' and partyin' all day/night.
So I keep my prime sun time drinkin' as low as can be.
The biggest change is that Bonnaroo is now pretty garbage, as compared to when it used to be interesting and innovative.
Well, that, and the roving gangs in the campgrounds. Make sure you hide your pepper spray well, because they'll take it away from you at the gates if they find it, but damned if you won't wind up needing it.
More expensive tickets and shorter sets are the big drawbacks. Amish Donuts and Food Truck Oasis are big improvements. Also I think the shift in culture/demographic is best depicted by the number of people you now witness urinating into cups in the middle of crowds. It isn't everyone/everywhere but there is certainly an element of this that I don't feel used to exist. Kids these days got no respect for the farm or their fellow attendees. Treat it like a toilet.

This is going to be a wild generalization based on anecdotal evidence, but in my personal experience there was a direct correlation between the amount of douchebaggery at Roo and the amount of Bassnectar on the lineup.
