Do Make Say Think? they did a couple festivals last year. relevant album: Goodbye Enemy Airship The Landlord Is Dead. I see nothing for the demon part.
Blink-182 + Matt Skiba. Blink (in some form) is on the Firefly lineup. Tom's other band, Angels & Airwaves, has a song called "Heaven". Matt Skiba had a side project called "Heavens" and later "The Hell." Demon to demon. According to interviews, Tom Delonge had been prioritizing his other projects ahead of Blink for years before he split. The antagonist farewell. Shut it down.
Internal band politics aren't gonna be part of the roo clues.
The more times I see, Godspeed You! Black Emperor posted, the more sense it makes. I retract my Wavves guess even if that is who I want it to be.
I'm growing to think this too. I had thought Wavves, but GY!BE (what an acronym) makes sense too. More sense, really. It's right in the band name, and the clues have been a little obvious this year. You have to do more extrapolation to get to Wavves.
Did some quick research -- they dropped an album last year and have US dates until February. Latest dates are Quebec in April, so it seems quite possible.
My money is on Ween. The boognish is their demon god, the antagonist is their separation, farewell cause they got back together a month or so ago. Their drummer, Claude Coleman Jr., was responsible for the leaking of the rumor that they were getting back together. The person who overheard him accurately predicted their reunion, the location of their first few shows, and Claude also mentioned a bonnaroo, so ween is a 99% certainty of attendance. One of these clues has to be it, and I think this is the one

They also have a song called "demon sweat" that's about a woman leaving a relationship from the despondent perspective of the guy getting left.

the second half connection is so obvious and right on the difficulty level the rest of the clues have been but what's the demon to demon correlation to godspeed?

What would one demon say to another demon? "Godspeed You! Black Emporer." I mean, I don't know any demons personally, but I'm sure that's exactly how they say goodbye to each other.
Of course, now that I've written it out, the GY!BE logic seems dumb.
As for Ween, I think they'll play Roo, but I don't think Roo would tease them in their third clue of ten -- if they're going to be billed as high as people indicate.

That's a sensible assumption, I wouldn't be surprised if this wasn't a ween clue, but I also wouldn't put it past the people at bonnaroo either
Considering the relative simplicity of the clues so far this year, it makes sense if you look at the whole phrase. A demon says godspeed (Goodbye) to another demon (a Black Emperor), an antagonist. You can assume that only another demon would say "godspeed" to a demon.
Every other guess I've seen (Wavves included) requires too much shoehorning with song and album titles and whatnot, and is too complicated to be the answer. Reading/analyzing the clue in its purest form, you have to say the answer is Godspeed You! Black Emperor.
EDIT: This clue is structured and solved the same way as the clues for Blood Orange, Tyler the Creator, and to an extent Lucius.

Demon to demon just seems like too random and specific a phrase to not have something more obvious than the totally arbitrary "that's what a demon would probably say" argument to connect it. I think you are right it is that band but that connection needs to be better supported or was very poorly written
The Devil, would be considered one of the greatest antagonist throughout theological study as well as numerous literary works. Devil and demon can be interchangeable terms.
A common name for the Devil is "The Prince of Darkness". Darkness = Black. The Prince of Darkness could be a Black Emperor.
And as noted Farewell is saying goodbye. So Godspeed You! Is our farewell.
I would feel pretty confident with GY!BE guess
Edit: Also in Dante refers to Satan as the Emperor of hell and his appearance is of a giant demon. And of course Satan is the antagonist in Dantes Inferno

You know that its a stretch of a guess or that they won't be at Roo in general?
He doesn't know.
He's right. Nobody is doing a good job making it fit the clue at all. A lot of it is just bringing up Hemingway, Kipling and other random literary references that have nothing to do with the band or clue.
An easier way would be to look at is who would be an antagonist from the perspective of two demons. God. So an "antagonist's farewell" would be to say Godspeed.
That at least flows somewhat logically. I'm still not sure it makes the band fit.
Like I said, what I know is that the attempts to cram GY!BE in as the answer to this clue are no less strained or tortuous than any of the previous guesses in this thread. The only difference is that people want to see GY!BE on the lineup, as opposed to Wavves or whoever. But all things considered, an act like Wavves is 100x more likely to be there than GY!BE.
It may not be GYBE, but you don't know that for sure.

Just because Wavves is more likely doesn't mean GYBE is impossible. There's a precedent for left-field bookings/older indie bands being in the clues ... Neutral Milk Hotel was a clue two years ago.
I just think GYBE is the least shoehorned guess IMO. The Wavves guess is literally just the word "demon" being in one of their song titles. In that case I'll guess it's Imagine Dragons.
I know you kind of have to make an assumption with GYBE ("demon to demon" implying a conversation between black emperors), but it still makes sense in the totality of the clue. Each part of the sentence makes no sense without the other.

As much as I would like it to be the answer, I'm still not really convinced. If you look at the other clues this year, they all seem pretty direct and straightforward with a likely answer. GYBE is a better guess than Wavves clue wise, but I still don't think it's a case where it's a good enough answer to consider it solved.
