Are Twenty One Pilots even popular with anybody over high school age? A city festival would be probable, but a camping festival seems like a hard sell.
They had the biggest daytime What crowd of the festival last year.
Same could probably be said for Macklemore in 2013 (billed 19th that year).

My 10 year old nephew gets really annoyed with me and my 14 year old nephew (his brother) when we start calling him Blurryface and inserting his name in that song.

gonna throw out an unpopular opinion and say that twenty one pilots have some good material. blurryface is very meh but there are a couple tracks off of vessel that are good, and a ton off of their oldest record Regional at Best (which isnt on itunes but all over youtube) that i enjoy a lot. They also put on a really energetic live show. i know ill get ripped apart for this but they're a band that shouldnt get quite as much shit as it does.

I went into TOP last year with extremely low interest but went because the crew we were with couldn't contain their excitement. I have to admit that after the show I was really impressed and became a bigger fan. Their style of music is really hard to pin down because it feels like every song has a totally different feel to it, which probably helps them out in the long-run of not getting stuck in one genre. I think if they spent a lot of money on the #1 headliner or a lot to bring in a really solid undercard then I could see them headlining, otherwise they'd probably be a pre-headliner. Although, based on the crowd from last year, I'd hate to have to go on after that and try to one up them in terms of energy.

It can be really hard to get into because, like you said, every song can feel soooo different. But are some really talented guys and their shows are a ton of fun.

We haven't even made it through Bonnaroo 2016 and people are already offering up crazy ideas like Twenty One Pilots headlining next year. Not to mention that suggestion that their music is anything but hot garbage. Jesus H. Christ people.
Their shows feel way too gimmicky. And they have a sound almost like they grew up in the post hardcore mid 2000 warped tour scene but they wanted to try to make music that appealed to everybody. They suck. They would def be a weak headliner but a 3-6 slot nonetheless.

Does TOP still have a backing track accompanying their live show? I saw them at Boston Calling in 2014 and other than the vocals and a live drum set, all the music came from tape.

That I don't remember because I was new to them but that's pretty lame if they do that. But you do usually just see the two of them on stage so that could be the case. My coworker actually went to high school with one of the guys and said the "group" has gone through different versions and essentially everyone but one guy was fired from the band and they brought the other guy in right before they made it big. So it used to be a band but is now a 2 man operation.

used to be 3 guys, tyler and a different drummer and a bassist, the drummer left, josh was introduced to tyler by the old drummer, then the bassist left. then they released vessel.

TOP as a headliner are in question, after LCD's set last night? As a guy who knew nothing about TOP last year, I thought their set was excellent, with a huge energetic fan base, great mix of songs, and interesting showmanship. Oh and everyone knew atleast a song or 2. LCD was a show that belonged where it was last, a tent at 2:30am. No headlining frontman should tighten up a stage like that and move his band in around him so that his lack of showmanship is hidden. Try a razor, a shower, and a stylist. I'm not hating, Im expressing the obvious. You are lucky to get that slot, blow it up. TOP would take their 3pm show and raise it up 2 levels, ala Jack White who took it and ran. LCD see BJ minus the hits.

You're literally the first person I've seen that has said a single negative thing about LCD's set. I don't think whatever you took from that show was as "obvious" as you think it is.

Yes, god forbid that a frontman remains stationary so that he can focus 100% on his musical performance and timing. And his appearance, oh gosh what a slob. Unlike my boys from TOP who cover their necks in black paint, and can't engage their crowd without needing to resort to circus tricks like backflips and climbing inside an inflatable ball!

From a neutral point of view regarding both performances, and wanting to be entertained, that is my opinion. If LCD impressed their fans, that's great, and whatever James did is why they are fans. I'm not a raging TOP fan, but they impressed me and opened my eyes to their act. LCD did not. As a reference, my top bands this year are PJ, Claypool, Kurt Vile, Tame Impala. Don't get mad, fans opinions are going to vary greatly from mild or non fans.

A congested stage setup and unkempt look weren't obvious to you? Ok then.

I'm pretty sure everyone who attended was too busy dancing to notice if the drums were close to the keyboards or if James looked like he always looks.

You're totally 100% right. LCD nailed it. Perfect headliner. My bad.
You're the person making some kind of argument that Twenty One MF'ing Pilots could headline because you think that a headlining set from someone else was bad.
