May I participate in this if I won't be over 40 until a couple weeks after Roo and still sometimes get carded when buying beer?
My advice is just the standard advice that applies to everyone: pace yourself and don't try to see every show, familiarize yourself with the map, drink more water than you think you need, protect your skin from the sun, see a bunch of acts you don't know well, relax, drink more water, and don't be afraid to just wander around and see what's happening. Of course don't forget the Goldbond, or your wristbands and Price Increase PAID sticker (parking pass).
I'd concur with all that was written above and add: Try to stay off your feet and out of the sun as much as possible during the day. I turn 45 this year, and I usually try to watch early afternoon sets sitting down in any sliver of shade I can find. That move always allows me to go late and enjoy post-midnight Centeroo. Also, bring super comfortable shoes. A guy in our group wore his Fit Bit last year, and by the end of the weekend he'd walked nearly 40 miles - and we were in VIP.

I was 50 at my first Roo in 2013. Hat, comfy shoes, sunblock and for me VIP. As always preparation is key. Do some walking now to make sure you are not sore after the first day. You can always buy any drink or food you need there.

The prep-walking thing is super advice! You can do all sorts of fest pre-planning, like bringing the proper supplies, but getting your body ready helps, too. I've already started taking long walks after work with my wife, just to be ready next month. Sadly, being from Ohio there's not much I can do to prepare for that southern TN humidity. :-)
Agree with walking regularly leading up to Roo, if it's not something you already do. Go ahead and get used to that burn.
Find time to fit in some stretching every day at the fest. Even if it's while you're watching a show. About 15 minutes of stretching the legs, back, and shoulders has made a huge difference for me as I've spent the last 10 years from age 30 to now 40 attending Roo.
Perhaps this is too nitpicky or overly specific, but as i get closer to "get off my lawn" territory, I've found that one of the things that frustrates me the most is getting caught in a clusterfuck of people leaving shows. Especially between the What and Which stage. I try to plan to avoid any kind of major foot traffic snarls like that. Some are unavoidable, but others are obvious when you look at the schedule. Might not be as much of an issue this year if attendance is really so sharply down.
Typically how many people are in the over 40 croud? I have gone to a number of different types shows in the past 10 years where I was one of the oldest people there. I will say I have felt accepted each time, especially when i wear my Bernie "Steal Your Face" shirt
Caffeine in quantity along with water and alcohol. 14-16 hour days can take their toll if you don't have stimulus. An Iced Coffee and occasional red bull should help. Of course there will be other things to keep people awake on Sunday - Deadheads and all that.
Also I'm assuming you being a senior attendee, funnel cakes and cold pizza won't cut it. Last year they had some really good food trucks toward the back. The meatball truck was outstanding, and there was a great bake fresh pizza place. Bacon flight, while hipster and trendy, was also worth a sample. But do some digging on the app, and you will find some decent shit to eat.

There are plenty of older Rooers, you won't feel old there, at least I never have. I would say that if you're getting a bit more beat up in your old age take some anti-inflammatory stuff, Aleve etc, and stay very hydrated. Also, if you're over 40 then you should know better than to wear a Bernie shirt.
Our group varies, size wise, by the year, but this year we're going to have around 14 people. Of those, about 8 will be 40 or older. Yes, people my/our age might be in the minority on the farm, but we're still a visible demographic.

My group has about 10 (unless our musician friends are coming and just haven't said yet). Our group ranges from 35-44.

52 this year and my 14th Bonnaroo!Age is just a number folks!Do what you want, when you want.Make nice with your neighbors, offer help to the newbies when needed, they're going to need a helping hand every now and then.I always enjoy a huge breakfast, enough to share with 10-15 people, and ample coffee, even though I travel solo.A good breakfast will fuel you up and it's really the only time cooking is even remotely comfortable in the heat. The rest of the day just snack on trail mix and fresh fruit. There's plenty to eat inside centeroo.

No matter what, you will be accepted There are TONS of younger people, but I always see plenty of people my age or much older. it's a pretty amazing place.
49 years old and I agree with everything on this thread. My best advice is: 1) Make a good camp with lots of shade (tarps and EZ ups), and breeze (bring fans and a generator if need be) and 2) always sleep until 10AM or later with the help of sleep masks, earplugs and Ambien (if needed). 3) Stay hydrated, eat citrus and wear super comfy shoes (I do my 40 miles in Sanuk flip flops). 4) Wear a wide brimmed hat and that's about it. Maybe 5) Pace yourself and know your limits. Do not go for broke the minute you get there, but rather find your sweet spot and try to stay there.
And everyone there is super nice to everyone. No one gives old farts the hairy eyeball or even looks twice. Just one big fun party! Enjoy!!!See you there!!!
Truth. Also this is great advice for everyone of any age at Roo. And at 60+ I have never gotten a hairy eyeball-actually I've gotten lots of high fives and "Rock On"s just for being old and being there.
Also, if you're over 40 then you should know better than to wear a Bernie shirt.
I'll wear mine at least one day at Roo. Maybe I'll wise up in a few weeks when I turn 40. Doubt it though. And I will definitely whine about the heat - that's kind of my thing.
I came out kickng and screaming in 1974. Everything in this thread is solid advice! I might also recommend considering camping in Tents Only. Yes, you're probably gonna feel like you're about to die while setting up your camp, but not having to walk a mile to your camp site to resupply & hydrate is glorious for the rest of the fest!
I went to my first 'roo at 58, turned 60 on the farm and made it 4 times. I'd love to still be going but a bad step on a patch of ice ended my hopes of getting back. The best move I made was going VIP the last 2 years, I loved GA too but the conveniences that come with VIP made it a breeze. I still have Bonnaroo near the top of my list of best decisions made in my lifetime. Enjoy!

I do the VIP. I need some conveniences at Roo.
Now that there are flushable toilets for the masses what's the point of VIP outside of being parked closer to Centeroo? I'd think they'd need to step up their game with some bidet (not sure of the plural for that noun, I'm not very smart).

God a bidet would be magical. But I personally like the free showers, the free ice cream at 1 and 5 (perfect when it's so hot you think your dying). Free Thursday night dinner (I don't drink but there's free beer also) and Sunday morning brunch. Being super close to the entrance, letting us keep ice/water in our Camelbacks when rolling into centeroo, super light pat downs and waking up to soundchecks. We did it the first year for the bathrooms, the perks keep us coming back to VIP.

I'm 38 for reference. My upcoming wedding is the only reason we aren't doing VIP this year! Gonna give Groop a try this year
