Yeah, no objective person can say GnR was a shit headliner. It was a huge reunion that went on to do a sold-out NFL stadium tour. If a fests books a band that popular to headline, it's a good get, like em or not.
For me personally they are a shit headliner; I thought Axl being hurt made it seem even worse than I was anticipating. But I wasn't there, and had I been there I wouldn't have been at the GnR set. It was definitely great publicity for the fest though.
Oh fuck yes it is. They've let out a few big ol' mehs in recent memory.
I thought Coachella last year was in the inverse of last years Bonnaroo.. Like Bonnaroo had great headliners and a shit undercard, Coachella had shit headliners (except for LCD who they shared with Roo) and a phenomenal undercard...
Coachella will always have a good to great lineup. They have the biggest budget and they run at a time of year when no other festivals are, so they pretty much get their pick of the litter. Bigger doesn't always necessarily mean better though; and some of the mid range festivals have been very creative with making the most with what they have available to them.
My assessment of the Coachella/Bonnaroo dynamic
Coachella has always been an "alternative music" festival. That's a musical genre/scene/whatever that will always skew towards a younger audience, but which also pulls in a decent amount of people up the age bracket and which has had a lot of staying power, fans don't tend to fall off from it. Once a lot of pop started leaning alternative and vice versa, Coachella was sitting on a gold mine and that's when it became a sure, instant sellout, and a scene unto itself. The location and timing definitely helped as well. All of this meant that it could be the festival it wanted to be without any worries.
Jamband and the associated genres aren't really based around musical growth and progression over time. So, as a massive festival, Bonnaroo struggled when that audience has started drying up. So it became an alternative music fest with a jamband bend. This meant that it was appealing to two different audiences (not that there's no crossover), which, while it made it more musically diverse, also made it less stable from an economic standpoint because it wanted to keep it's vision while needing to following musical trends. This worked for a while but as all of the other factors that contributed to this years disaster (they've been discussed to death here) started coming up, Bonnaroo either failed to realize that they didn't have enough of a safety net to put out a significantly subpar lineup, or they severely misread the musical and industry landscape. I think it will be hard for them to really come back. From a long term standpoint, they don't just need to put out a great lineup and get attendance to bounce back next year, they need to reestablish their entire brand and make a case for their relevance in 2017.

GNR were fantastic IMO, Axel sounded fantastic so the sitting thing didnt really bother me and Slash made up for the lost energy. Was especially nice that towards the end i was able to walk up to have maybe 3 people in front of me.
No, this will be my first year, but I don't have to to know that "AMERICA HAS DECIDED, COACHELLA IS THE #1 FESTIVAL" is a dumb hyperbole.
Oh good, so you'll get it then. I mean what would our #1 be if not? The world's eyes aren't on Lolla/ACL/Roo every year, I can assure you of that. Trust me man, I've been all over and it's the best one out there.

It doesn't matter anymore anyways, as America's already found it's Glastobury. Coachella = the big 1 now. It's a festival that has been built on quality and consistency.
The Coachella dickriding is getting a bit ridiculous around here
I've always thought Coachella is an amazing festival and I've never had the chance to go. I just don't don't understand why these guys feel the need to shit on roo, just because they have an allegiance to Coachella now. I mean, it's not a new thing that it's the best American festival. We know this already. We get it guys.
Since we are debating Coachella's relative stature I'll do them as well for the same years. No idea what their tickets go for off hand though...
2010: Pavement / LCD Soundsystem / Sly Stone / Jay-Z / The Specials (Top 5 Value: $225) 2011: Arcade Fire / Kanye West / PJ Harvey / The Strokes / Lauryn Hill (Top 5 Value: $375) 2012: Radiohead / Dr. Dre / Frank Ocean / DJ Shadow / Arctic Monkeys (Top 5 Value: $370) 2013: New Order / Stone Roses / Blur / Wu-Tang Clan / Vampire Weekend (Top 5 Value: $225) 2014: Arcade Fire / Pixies / Outkast / Beck / Bryan Ferry (Top 5 value: $400) 2015: AC/DC / Jack White / Tame Impala / Steely Dan / War on Drugs (Top 5 value: $195) 2016: LCD Soundsystem / Sufjan Stevens / Guns N Roses / Disclosure / Courtney Barnett (Top 5 value: $200)
I'll also toss in 2009 since that was the year I actually went to Coachella: Coachella 2009: Paul McCartney / Public Enemy / Morrissey / My Bloody Valentine / Leonard Cohen (Top 5 value: $485)
2009 also happened to be my favorite Bonnaroo lineup year too: Bonnaroo 2009: Bruce Springsteen / Elvis Costello / Public Enemy / Beastie Boys / David Byrne (Top 5 value: $545)
The direction they're headed in now is an unfortunate one. I only mention Coachella because I'm almost certain it will maintain identity. I had some fantastic experiences at this festival. It's disappointing.

We should wait until we see a lineup before declaring Bonnaroo dead. Give them a chance to respond to last year.

Agree. Also give them a chance to invent and implement a climate change machine first.
