I just bring mine into the shop and they tell me if they are still fine. I know I have put some serious miles on mine and am just planning on replacing them. It's like 500 miles, and my shoes are a few years old. I might have to look into the Nike app if they have that shoe tracker though.
I don't care so much about the shoe tracker (although it is a perk)... I love how it cleanly sorts all my runs. JR and I are friends on Nike and sometimes compete for mileage for the month. It's a good motivator to get back out there... Because I truly hate running in the dead of winter and the dead of summer.

With the new update awhile back, those features don't show up on mine anymore!! I should check into that bc that was one of my favorite features.... I'd log on and run a little longer if I knew I could pass someone in the monthly ranking lol

I was so irritated when they updated it! It was so buggy. It's a lot better now. I still wonder why change a good thing though? I could care less about all the social feed crap.
400 miles is about when you should replace them, especially if you run in a wide variety of conditions. You may be able to stretch that out to 450ish if you primarily run on the treadmill or in good conditions

I'm a chunky runner so I don't max out the mileage on my shoes. When my feet start hurting, I buy new ones and expire the old ones to outside chore shoes!
That is exactly what my shoe dude told me at the Louisiana Shoe Running Company. He told me to bring in my shoes around 500 miles to replace them. I KNOW I have run more than 400 miles already. I am very close to that 500 mile marker which is why I have been looking up new versions of my shoe lately.
It depends on your stride really. If you run light footed you should be able to make 500. If you run heavy footed or on the sides of your feet, you'll wear out a lot quicker.
Thanks for starting this up. I just started running a couple of months back, and this is very choice.
Just got some new gloves for Christmas, and buying my first "real" pair of running shoes on Monday. I'm like jojo the little indian circus boy with a brand new pet. Thinking about a Mizuno Wave Rider 20, or some New Balance foams. Anyone have recommendations for someone that's looking for comfort and stability over speed?
Also, I'm running in the Chicago Marathon next year, and I'm raising money for it (you may have seen a thread I put together for it). Specifically, I'm doing it for St. Jude because they're the cat's pajamas. If you guys would like to donate, or know anyone that wants to donate, please visit my personal page. I appreciate every contribution. St. Jude Donations Link

I had the new balance fresh foams and enjoyed them, but did find them possessing a bit too much stability. I'm currently in the saucony Ride 9's (which my running store recommended for stability and comfort over speed) and don't have any complaints about them after 300 miles.

I tried on Saucony before. They never felt as good as Brooks to me. I'm running on my second pair of Brooks Ghosts now.

Would you say that in terms of too much stability for comfort/pain, or that you just like a leaner shoe for more speed?

It felt clunky and heavy. It wasn't painful but I felt I dragged my feet more than any other shoe.
I unintentionally ran into a coyote one day. But that's it. My dog is lazier than me.
Currently in Asics. Just picked up the new generation of the Gel DS Trainer (v.21). Third round with this shoe, and will probably evaluate my gait and new offerings next year at this time. Usually rotate out my shoes every 350-500 miles (a year).
Advice: get some rollers. I use the targetpoint kind, but any will help. My IT Bands got inflamed when I was training for my first marathon, and my legs haven't been the same since. Rollers help a great deal loosening up areas which you cannot normally stretch (no joint, for instance). I need to use mine more. It hurts, but it is immediate relief once done.
Getting old sucks.
I jumped over a snake once. I thought that was the way I was going to die. But I survived. Idk what I'd do if I saw a coyote!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I love my roller! I keep meaning to buy a ball just for my feet. When i wake up in the mornings, my feet feel like they belong to an 80 year old
Golf balls. They're cheaper and you get a bunch so you can keep one at your house, one at the office, one in the car (maybe you drive to wherever you're running that day), etc. Or you have a cat and it keeps stealing the golf balls. Racquet/tennis balls are great too, if the golf ball is a bit too hard.
A small length of PVC pipe is also a nice thing to keep in with all your running stuff. We have multiple friends who use that instead of some expensive, small roller immediately after long runs/races.
This thread makes me feel like such an irresponsible runner
I post, but I've run twice for a total 2.5 miles in the last week. And that's one of my better weeks lately. I'm more of a "Derek Zoolander's school for kids who can't run good, but used to run good though" kind of guy.
Injury prevention is key. However, If it ain't broke, keep doing what works for you.
I guess it helps that I'm young too. Probably gonna have to start worrying about stuff like that sooner than later
I'm only 24 but I have an irrational fear of hurting myself badly enough to have to not be able to do my favorite things (concerts, festivals, hiking, and running)
I'm 31 and little over weight. I've got 2 half marathons, a couple of 10ks, and more 5ks than I can count under my belt. I think I really only focus on being a responsible runner and taking care of my body when i'm doing anything more than like 6 miles. And most days, I wake up and feel my feet. I've had a stress fracture in my foot before from wearing shoes without cushion (again, I'm an over weight runner so skinny people don't have to be so concerned) and after that, i just make sure my feet are well taken care of. When I'm training, I watch what i eat and make sure to stretch a lot. If you aren't training for long distance, then running is definitely an easy sport and you don't have to take yourself too seriously.
As a female, just always be careful. I had a scary experience 5 months back where a guy tried grabbing me into his truck. Thankfully someone turned on the road I was on and he drove off immediately and I was let go. After that, i decided to get a dog! I'd been running for YEARS and never felt scared but I havent really run since. I've been working on training my dog but have not done any solo runs. Just be careful out there pleeeeeeease!
Just got a pair of Brooks Adrenaline GTS 17. This is my first pair of serious running shoes in like 10 years, and the first real pair I've had for training for this marathon. Took them out for a three-miler yesterday, and I think I cried a little. It was also raining though, so, you know, maybe I wasn't. I'm still tough.

41 and a little over weight, been running off and on for almost 7 years now. I have had stress fractures in my feet from derby but never from running. As far as the safe thing, you aren't even lying. Just recently where I run, a woman was dragged on the other side of the levee and assaulted. He was sitting on the bench and when she passed he grabbed her from behind put her in a choke hold and dragged her down. When she fought back, he knocked her out. Always be on high alert even if you are in a safe area. People be cray.

I rock the Nike Pegasus 31s on my road runs and Solomon Speedcross 3 for trail runs/OCR races. Both great shoes but im due for a new pair of road shoes here soon. Also, this year I plan on finally signing up for the Roo 5k, I talk about doing it every year and every year I decide drugs and sleeping in is a better choice (still may be).

What's funny is the day my accident happened, I had read a story on runner's world where a woman was urging women to run in groups bc of an experience she had (she was on vacation in hawaii and went for a run and the man knocked her down, fisted her, and she escaped but not without severe consequences) and I went home for my run at 5pm in daylight down a street that you could clearly see an elementary school! It was scary and I don't want to be raped and killed but I regret not calling and reporting it. When i got home, I cried and told my sister and I got online and considered getting a knife or pepper spray. My boyfriend at the time got me pepper spray but I didnt feel safe and have yet to use it.
The more articles I read basically told me the same thing - you aren't trained to use those weapons immediately before the attack, they can be used on you if you become overpowered. Worse, if you hit a man with a knife and don't kill him, he could become even more enraged and it could actually make things worse! So I settled on getting a dog. He's a hunting dog that requires a lot of exercise (Black Mouth Cur) and naturally are overprotective of their pack. He does well with my immediate family and those living in the house but he has not been socialized with other dogs or humans solely for the purpose I got him. I want him to be on alert. I know that sounds terrible but I have joined a facebook group where a long term reputable breeder has been giving me advice on how use my dog's natural instincts to do what I need him to. Even on small runs, if he sees a dog or human he makes sure I am right beside him and he growls until we pass but inside my house, he's the absolute sweetest dog in the world. I got really lucky with him and I believe he will definitely protect me. I reward him for running with me and its actually really nice to run with him as I've always been a solo runner.
Can't wait until he's old enough to train long distance! I'm ready to bust out some mileage again!! Last year before this happened, I built back up to 10 miles or more on the weekend long run and during the week i was running 3 times.

Awesome! I think the Adrenaline's were my second runner (nyuk) up to the Ghosts.

I was running a few months ago and was coming up behind a walking woman. As I got close I noticed she slipped pepper spray out of her pocket. Meep!
