Whether it's your first Bonnaroo or you’re a music festival veteran, we welcome you to Inforoo.
Here you'll find info about artists, rumors, camping tips, and the infamous Roo Clues. Have a look around then create an account and join in the fun. See you at Bonnaroo!!
Has the hype around 21P died off a little? Sounds like neither Hangout nor Firefly blew the doors off with them at the top of the bill. Maybe we'll be spared.
They are doing a run of all the main concert venues here in Columbus, starting at The Basement (holds like a few hundred people) going all the way up to Nationwide Arena and The Schott and they sold out every one of them in like minutes. Granted they are from Columbus so that makes sense but the speed that they sold out kind of took me by surprise. There's no indication they are working on new stuff yet so I would think unless something new comes out from them, Bonnaroo would have no reason to book them.
Note: They did use that new ticketing system where you register to get a code texted to you and then you go online and get tickets at a certain time with that code. Supposedly it was to ward off scalpers but from everyone I've talked to that attempted to use it, it was an absolute nightmare and a ton of people were getting timed out of things halfway through the ordering process and things like that. So let's just hope that more acts and promotion companies aren't going to this model for tours of bands.
The whole thing is a clusterfuck. It's also super annoying to hear everyone here cream themselves over TOP.
The headliners will be fine anyways. It's the rest of the of the lineup we should be more worried about.
I wonder if RHCP are signs of repeat bookings to fill the legacy spot? If that's the case other Live Nation tours like Tom Petty could be on the table.
Tom Petty is not playing a "Live Nation tour." Almost half his dates are at AEG venues, he has a few nights coming up at Red Rocks (AEG owned), he just played Mountain Jam (an independent fest) this past weekend, and he is playing AEG owned Jazz Fest.
This is why when you bozos say things like "Live Nation package tours," I roll my eyes hard as hell and call it for what it is, message board nonsense. Very few acts do LiveNation only tours. Mostly just big time artists like U2. Jay Z just got a LiveNation only deal and it was a huge story.
Again, package deals are a thing. I can personally attest to this.

Experience and sound reasoning?! No on my watch, Bozo.
Welcome to realiteeee. (Speeds away on scooter to Boys Noize songs of same title*)
I don't think we need to be so dire with these headliners. The top 8 was not that bad, albeit very different from past Bonnaroos. It's the rest of the line up that was a tire fire.
Yeah the lineup was honestly pretty decent until it hit Marshmello. the problem was that #'s 10-30 should have been 20-40. And that every undercard dance act other than Claude VonStroke should have been replaced.
May Tycho May Phoenix June Rooo July MMJ and Margo Price August Queen with Adam Lambert August Roger Waters (Bucket list #1) August Spoon and Portugal the man Sept Depeche Mode Sept Pilgrimage Fest
Sort out the undercard and Bonnaroo is fixed. It's literally that simple.
Is there a Live Nation owned festival that has a good undercard in 2017?
Not asking in a smarmy way I'm genuinely curious.
I think ACL and Lolla do a good job of serving everyone. People forget that Bonnaroo never relied on young money in the past. It was a mixed breed and that was part of the allure. One could jump from Bassnectar/Ratatat and still be be able to fit in a Buffalo Springfield. That's what sold me on this festival for six consecutive years at least.

ACL - spoon, bonobo, cut copy, ferg, 1st aid kit, rufus, alison wonderland, live, the black angels, angel olsen, oar, danny, EODM, thundercat, hamilton leit, benjy booker, whitney, alex g (not for me but for all you weirdos) would have all be welcomed at roo.

Lolla seems about the same to me, but ACL is measurably better.

It's not much different, but the inclusion of those like Kaytranada and Justice make having the worst possible version of Perry a little more bearable.

Also, if anyone is *actually* interested in the minutiae of major concert promotion, there was an interesting case out of DC a few years ago. Local promoter IMP (Merriweather Post) sued LiveNation (Jiffy Lube Live) saying that LN's practice of packaging tours and routing them through Jiffy Lube at the expense of MPP constituted and antitrust violation. The case went to the 4th Circuit and IMP ultimately lost, not because package tours don't exist, but because (essentially) what was happening didn't rise to antitrust levels. Even though MPP and JiffyLube were the two marquee venues for big name acts, there were lots of other venues and acts in the DC/MD/VA area. The 4th Circuit judge who wrote the opinion was also a Reagan appointee and W Bush SCOTUS short-lister, so the decision was forgone when it got there, but it was probably the right decision anyway.
BUT! The Court acknowledges package tours/deals exist multiple times throughout the opinion.
Here's what they say right up front
Artists have two main options for organizing the individual concerts that make up their tours. One approach is to use a different local promoter for each location and secure venues through the promoters. Alternatively, an artist can work with a national promoter such as LN for most or all of the tour. The two options frequently offer different modes of compensation. “Artists who contract with one or a few national promoters to organize their tours often receive a guaranteed payment from the promoter based on the number of shows organized by that promoter. Artists who contract ‘locally’ and book with several promoters in various parts of the country will often receive instead a percentage of the gross ticket sales from each concert.”
and later
More broadly, the national promoter holds distinct advantages over its regional competitor: it can offer tour packages combining a series of venues with promotion services in multiple locations. By contrast, IMP is limited to the Washington Baltimore area, most likely a single stop on any given tour. Accepting a comprehensive and cost-effective package that happens to include Nissan is not tying –- it is simply a good deal for the consumer. (edit: note here consumer=artist)
That kind of stuff is in there throughout, acknowledgement of the basic functioning of the shed-concert industry.
The final and perhaps most salient factor is that Nissan may be a superior venue to Merriweather. IMP scoffs at this idea, boasting that “Merriweather is an iconic amphitheater in a bucolic setting,” whereas “Nissan is a concrete shell with horrific parking problems.” Appellant’s Br. at 42. Setting aside IMP’s potential bias for its own venue, Nissan possesses at least some advantages. It carries the prestige and name recognition of being affiliated with a top-flight concert promoter. Nissan also holds over 5000 more seats than Merriweather, nearly all of which are fixed seats that command a higher ticket price than open lawn space, giving Nissan significantly greater earning potential.
I'm way out of the loop when it comes to mainstream EDM, would Skrillex headline? What are the realistic EDM acts that could be top 4?
He's done so many side projects I feel like people forget about him kind of. I think if he dropped an album or even released a few singles he would immediately be the top EDM act they could book but recently he was doing shows with his rock band so who knows if he even is making any original Skrillex music at this point.

Don't think he'd headline, probably top five though. Calvin Harris would headline, as well as Daft Punk (but there's a higher chance of Calvin Harris playing every night than that happening). That's pretty much it.

What about DJ Khaled? His EDC show was apparently a disaster, but he's still a big name that will probably get bigger in the next year. Not saying top 3, but top 5?

Late Night Which, here we go.
Over under on how many times he/a recording says his name during his set.

He was like 8 or 9 on his day at Coachella and while he does have a new album coming out (and probably another one between now and Roo) I don't think he climbs into the top 5. The highest we'll see him is probably 8.

G Jones, Goldfish and Flume did very well with the slots given to them though.
