I get the Schiano wasn't a sexy hire, but his track record as Rutgers and OSU should be enough to warrant a shot a P5 job. The Sandusky related allegations were flimsy at best, and thrown out in court. Now who the hell are they gonna find that wants to deal with this incompetent athletic dept and idiotic fan base?
The problem, again, is that Tennessee should be paying top dollar for a coach, but Schiano is not worth top dollar. So were they overpaying this guy, or going cheap? Neither answer is acceptable. That's the entirety of the problem with Schiano.
You hit the nail on the head. Hire him at Illinois and let him build that program over 5 years and prove he deserves a top level job. Hire him at Arkansas and let him build that program.

I was reading an article earlier today related to the calls for Currie's job. They touched on how Currie's handling of the situation also affects the appeal of the Tennessee job now as he is coming off like he bungled his first real responsibility, and nobody likes working for an idiot. Right now, I wish I could just reach out to the rest of the fanbase and tell them, "Unless there is something really, really off about the next guy, when it gets announced, shut the f*ck up and clap. I don't want to hear about their previous record. I don't want to hear how you don't think he can beat Saban. We used all our veto power up for the next ten years at least."
In addition the the points that potentpotables makes about Schiano, the optics of that hire are also just terrible. Regardless of whether the allegations are flimsy or even completetly false, public opinion on the matter is not good. Whether or not that is fair to schiano doesn't matter, and there was no reason to bring that baggage to knoxville. We have enough with whatever fallout there may be from CBJ's tenure, the recently settles title IX stuff, etc. And everything was exacerbated by how he handled it with the fanbase. The Grumors should have been quashed immediately before they grow from silly hillbillies' pipe dreams to a "real possibility." Shiz even albert haynesworth and other former players were jumping on the Gruden train. Poor choice in coach and terrible, terrible handling of the situation from the get-go. I'm glad Schiano isn't our coach, but good god how did it come to this.
edit: If I'm cutcliffe I'm gonna take my 2M+ at low expectation Duke and ride off into the sunset. there is no way he is interested and at his age I don't think he is a long term solution.
the main upside to Tee Martin is it may keep the crazier parts of our fanbase happy. the downside is he may be a terrible HC.

Most of the stories regarding Currie and the hiring search are that he took a very long look at Gruden and put a decent amount of effort into it. I felt he had to make some effort, but it should have been more along the lines of "Hey John, what would it take you to get on board? $12 million per plus bonuses? No thanks. Love you on Monday Night Football. Bye." That way, you can say you tried because some people (reportedly including some boosters) are ridiculous about the guy. Don't waste weeks going down that rabbit hole. If you haven't seen, there are still a few people out there grasping at Grumors like it's their sole reason to live. Yesterday, I saw a legit post where they said Schiano was all smoke and mirrors to make the Gruden hire that much more impressive.
Agreed that Cutcliffe should not be our guy. I honestly don't know why he would leave a cushy job at Duke to come to this pressure cooker at this stage in the game. People will want titles from him in two years because he was here with Fulmer, and it ain't happening.
Martin would do a lot to ensure people didn't get too crazy from the start. Dude won a national championship here. They'll wait and see how he does just for that. He's definitely a high risk high reward candidate. He could be a mistake failure to put any coach we've had so far to shame. He could also end up being really good. With his lack of head coaching experience, it'll be a bumpy ride at first regardless of the long term. I would hope that people could be patient through that. In the end, he called Hurd soft. People got mad, but it turns out he was right. Got to give him some goodwill for that at least.

Lol at Cutcliffe's Wikipedia
"David Nelson Cutcliffe is the head football coach of the University of Tennessee Volunteers. Cutcliffe is poised to take over a football team rich in talent and history after current athletic director John Currie attempted to screw it up."

He is a renowned recruiter. He's got a name on a street in knoxville. We could get him relatively cheap and sink a ton of money into his staff, and get Fulmer in his ear as a consultant/advisor. circle the wagons and ride out this shizstorm. I'm at the "eh, quack it" stage.

Right there with you. At this point, I'll be ok with basically anyone so long as it gets things moving forward again.

UT needs to stop wasting it's f*cking time with Gundy. Gundy played them 5 years ago for a pay raise from his damn alma mater, where he still works. I didn't hate the list in Jimmy's subsequent tweet, which is probably as good as it gets at this point.

Agreed. He would be a huge longshot at the best of times, and we're not in the best of times.
Re: Hyams' list, I would be good with any of the names on the list with varying levels of optimism about how the future would look.

Yeah, I would have been very unenthusiastic about that list on Sunday morning, but things have changed a bit. Here it is if anyone is curious:
Of those DCs, I'd prefer Venables, then Steele. I have not heard good things about Pruitt, as far as player relations go.
I think maybe I'd like chad Morris best out of that list, though. I really liked Norvell when he was at ASU, and he has done great things in Memphis, but he needs more HC time I think.
Whoever we get needs to keep Robert Gillespie on staff.

Reading some of the responses to the tweet reminds me of why we can't have nice things.

I think the Jimmy Hyams tweet that is more interesting is the Schiano MOU that was for 6 years and $4.5 million a year. That's decent money to hire a coach but absolutely ridiculous for Schiano. That should be enough right there for people to question Currie.

And that's not enough to get Gundy.
He makes $4.15 a year now, so it'd actually be a raise. I feel that Sunday will cause Tennessee to be more open with the money now to recover from the embarrassment and show they are serious about the football program.

I will also be very curious to see what the buyout looks like for the new coach. God help Currie if that number doesn't look nice after the amount of complaining I have seen about what Tennessee owes Jones and Dooley.
