"Currie declined to use a search firm, and he has instead been consulting with the Haslam Family and Tennessee legend Peyton Manning, according to the source.
Vols’ first-ballot Hall of Fame coach Phillip Fulmer, now a paid advisor to the UT President, has not been consulted on the hirings beyond being asked to help define the key characteristics the next Tennessee head coach should have."
Here's the answer to your question about why Tennessee can't get their stuff together, sang_xcx.
Should have been Dabo. We weren't even supposed to win our division. I think Miami was picked to win theirs.
That's not entirely fair as Florida State was widely believed to be a national title contender this year. If Clemson was in Miami's division, Clemson would have been picked to win that division.

I'm not sure. We had so many question marks going in. We lost so many guys to the NFL. We weren't supposed to finish the regular season ranked #1.

I'm sure he got a good share of the other 18 votes. Coach of the year honors are always odd because the criteria people use varies a good bit. For instance, Saban won SEC coach of the year last year. It was his first win since 2009 despite winning the SEC title in 2012, 2014 and 2015. Spurrier won it in 2010 for a team that went 8-5. McElwain won it by going 10-4 in 2015.
I also looked at the ACC. Cutcliffe won it by going 6-7 in 2012. I know it's Duke but damn. Florida State and Clemson both got 11 wins that year.

Dabo was 2nd but yea no big deal. I guess you can't give it to the same coach every year.
Didn't this happen before they hired Dooley, and Gundy used it to get into a bigger contract from OSU?
Jones actually. Report is that he was actually offered Florida before Mullen and turned it down. If he wanted to use a new contract to leverage a better deal at OSU, he would have done it then, I think. Realistically, Tennessee is reportedly offering him more than he's going to get in Stillwater any time soon. He can't just say no to that outright.
Gundy says no, which was predictable. Turned down 6 years, $42 million. That's a lot of cake. Someone has to have it and eat it too.
At the very least, Tennessee showed they're willing to bring money to the table. I just hope people keep their shit together as anyone should know Gundy was not a safe bet by any means.

Yup. Exactly as I figured. Morris is 14-22. He's awful. We should just get Butch back. Why are they avoiding Martin who is obviously going to be the greatest coach in the history of sport?
Tennessee's next speaking with Chad Morris apparently. I like that possibility.
People will hate it, but people are dumb.
The thing with Chad Morris is when tbat offense works it's great. When it doesn't it's a quick 3 and out and your defense is back on the field way too quick. He'll have to have a very good defense, so the def coordinator hire is crucial. Also you're going to have to be patient because it's going to take 3-4 years just to get his guys in there.

I think most college football fanbases have to do this every once in awhile. After you've had a few bad seasons, maybe you've had someone jilt you (or multiple people), and you think the only option is someone who values your program the way it should be valued, someone who bleeds (colors), an alum. That's how you get to Tee Martin. Maybe it works, maybe it doesn't, but the fans are happy, and sometimes you have to take those chances. Honestly I do think it's time to do that.
