For me personally, every show that had a mosh pit (minus Chance the Rapper)
1. Chance the Rapper (pit second row from the rail): Got in right after The Front Bottoms show. The great stampede into The What Stage was pretty epic. The pit line for me though actually wasn't too bad. I went over on the left side and there was a great security guard named Tony who took care of us all day. Everyone was super friendly and fun to hang out with. The show was pretty incredible which feels needless to say considering how close I was. Chance acknowledged and made direct eye contact with everyone in the front row. You could tell he was really appreciative of his hardcore fans. At one point he put his microphone down and told everyone in the front row to be quiet. Then in his normal yelling voice without a microphone he said "alright this is just for everyone in the front row, on three I want everyone to yell as loud as they can!" and that was a cool moment.
2. The Front Bottoms (pit): Going into this show I wasn't sure what it would be like so early on the main stage. TFB fans can get pretty wild and usually their shows are giant sing-alongs. Thankfully everyone in the pit section showed up to do exactly that. A couple mosh/dance circles broke out, we got a really fun circle pit going, everyone was yelling the lyrics to each other, complete strangers (me included) were putting their arms around each other to jump and swing each other around. It was probably the show where I felt most free spirited.
3. Travis Scott (pit): This show was chaos before it even started. The pit line was a giant mob of people pushed should to shoulder with no room to breathe. It reminded me of stories I heard about the Kanye pit line. The show itself was the most intense experience I had all weekend. At one point though someone (edit: turns out it wasn't security...some guy brought it in?) sprayed a fire extinguisher on the mosh pit. It was pretty fucked up. Travis Scott obviously called him out and there was a big fuck you chant to that guy. But other than that fucked up situation that show ended up being some of the most fun I had all weekend. No regrets about skipping Lorde for that experience.
4. The Orwells: One of my favorite parts about Bonnaroo are the Thursday punk shows (Cloud Nothings and Bully being my favorites from the past few years). This was the first show that I saw besides catching the last 30 minutes of Case Bloom beforehand. The fun and intensity in the crowd really showed me that Bonnaroo still had that same energy that's hard to get at other festivals.
5. Car Seat Headrest: I had already seen them at Shaky Knees and it was pretty much the same set except with that extra Bonnaroo energy from the crowd. The band invited a girl on stage to play the cowbell and that was really cool to see. Drunk Drivers/Killer Whales was by far my favorite sing-along at the festival.
Other shows I really enjoyed: Superjam, Jay Som, The xx (pit), Flatbush Zombies, Noname, The Weeknd, Khruangbin, Case Bloom & DJ Rate (both Case Bloom set and silent disco) and Hannibal Burres (stand up)

How is Crystal Castles without Alice? Do they do any of the old music?
That being said it's hard for me to support them if the stories about the abuse Alice received from Ethan are true.
It was dark, loud, bass-y. The live drummer really adds a lot to the live set. New girl did a good job, but the vocals are always 2nd fiddle in a live CC set.
Banger of a weekend - 5th bonnaroo, and probably my favorite so far despite initially thinking it was the weakest lineup of a year that I have gone.
Major Lazer in the pit - that was ridiculously fun; blasted in the face with sound Royal Blood in the pit - those dudes rip; surprise set of the weekend Gallant - I had a feeling this one was going to be good, but it far exceeded my expectations U2 - I've always been a hater, and they made a fan of me on Friday Future Islands, or maybe RCHP? or maybe Flatbush Zombies? or maybe Barclay Crenshaw? or maybe the xx? or maybe DRAM? or the Weeknd? all fantastic sets
The only disappointment of the weekend for me was Chance
I'm just gonna go ahead and say something about all the shows I went to here.
Thursday:
Hippo Campus: Really fun set that had me dancing. I thought the sound was a little to quiet though.
Case Bloom: What the fuck was this? The DJ at my high school prom was better... It was just a shitty sing along set with bad transitions.
The Orwells: This set was fun as fuck. Was in the pit from start to finish and everyone was going crazy.
The Lemon Twigs: Wow. Just wow. This was one of my most anticipated sets of the weekend and they exceeded my expectations. They were extremely talented and the show didn't have a single dull moment.
Turkuaz: This set was a fun dance party. I didn't stay they whole set because I was getting tired but I was having a good time.
Friday:
Khurangbin: I went to this set because of a recommendation from my friend (also heard good things here) and was definitely glad I went. The lead duo was super cool throughout the whole show.
Car Seat Headrest: I was slightly disappointed with this set. I really liked the songs I knew going in but the set just didn't really click for me. I thought there coachella stream was WAY better.
Kaleo: Not bad but not great either. I didn't really have anything else I wanted to see in the time slot so whatever.
U2: Great set. They were super talented and the production they had was simply breathtaking.
Portugal. The Man: Best set of the weekend. Everyone in the crowd was dancing the entire time (everyone also went crazy the second time they played feel it still). My favorite part was the don't look back in anger cover.
Unfortunately I didn't get to see The xx or glass animals because we had to calm down one of my friends at camp
Saturday:
Rainbow Kitten Surprise: The definition of average.
Future Islands: I was really surprised with how good this set was. The energy of the lead singer really took it to the next level. I really only knew two songs but it wasn't hard at all to enjoy the set.
The Head and The Heart: Similar to future islands I was surprised with this set as well. I thought it would be a boring, generic Lumineers type set but their stuff translated really well live. The song let's be still impressed me the most.
Chance: Extremely high energy and fun. It was pretty much what I expected. I might be wrong but it seemed like this was the most packed show of the weekend. I wish he was given more time.
Cage The Elephant: Cage always brings it. My third time seeing them and left just as impressed as the other times.
RHCP: Pretty similar to the set they played at lolla but I had a fun time.
Sunday:
Flint Eastwood: Great set at the Who Stage. Dance parties in the blazing sun are always fun.
Royal Blood: These guys rock. It was sad to see barley anyone at the what stage because the show was extremely good.
Hannibal: What the fuck?!? Everyone was telling me this would be hilarious but his whole set felt extremely phones in. Most of the set he just complained he had more time to go. There were some funny parts but not enough. He ended the set by asking the crowd 4 times if a sound outside was a helicopter and then dropped the mic and left. I'm assuming this was an off show because I've never heard a bad thing about him.
Milky Chance: Saw this while waiting for the Lorde pit line. They were ok but a lot of the set was hit or miss.
Lorde: Pit for this was simply amazing. Lorde is a great performer and there wasn't a dull moment the entire set. I thought the backup dancers were interesting as well. Definitely worth the wait.
The Weeknd: Not the biggest fan but I definitely had fun during this set. I thought the production and the fireworks at the end added tremendously to the set.
Top 5:
1. Portugal. The Man 2. Lorde 3. The Lemon Twigs 4. Chance 5. The Head and The Heart

The Lemon Twigs have What Stage potential, truly an amazing show, and a definite highlight of a great weekend of music

The girl on stage at Car Seat was a friend on mine who camped with us, to say it was a dream come true for her is a major understatement

So, I did nto see near the breadth of music I normally do. Not sure why, but I was not totally into it this year. I sorta hurt myself wednesday afternoon and it took me a bit to recover. My top 5:
1. RHCP - just a fun time. back parallel to the beer booths on the left side, the core inforoo contingent had a perfect dance area and we just jammed it. Stayed the whole event. 2. U2 - as a 13-16 year old kid, I had a Cassette of theirs that I played alot. hearing some of these songs played live was golden for me. Unfortunately the Mrs got cold and wanted to go home. I planned to hang around but aforementioned recovery was not complete so my back hurt. I bailed early and listened to them from camp. 3. Lukas Nelson and band. Everything I wanted it to be and more. He sounded great, band was very tight and overall, this was just a fun show. I smiled the whole time. 4. Margo Price. I am a new fanboy! she sounded incredible and I got to watch it with good friends. 5. Flume - just a fun dance party after dancing all night to RHCP.
Bad: the XX. I admit, I dont know their music but know of their existence. I was NOT impressed. Lead singer had no energy and IMO, not a good opener for the energy that Bono brought. their level of suckage may have led to the wife being cold. and not able to truly enjoy u2. we should have moved closer.
I was expecting more hate for U2. Happy to be disappointed!
I went into the weekend with only two must sees of the weekend and I got in the front of the pit for both so I was bound to be happy. That said, I had a considerably better time this weekend then expected. Maybe that just comes from exceeding low expectations but I'll take it!
U2 Tegan and Sara July Talk Mondo Cosmo Margo Price
Omitted the Superjams because it's not fair to compare them to regular sets.
Honorable Mention to Front Bottoms. They put on a great show and the crowd was phenomenal but their concerted efforts to appear that they weren't serious about the whole thing knocked them down a peg for me. Now get off of my lawn.

1. Backup Planet: They played pretty massive hours in the campgrounds altogether at Bonnaroo,(1-4 one night, 9-12 the next) but there 45 minute set Sunday literally melted my face and had everyone rocking, plus they gave me a shout-out.
2. Unbreakable Bloodline: This was a VERY underattended set that had great rap and rock combined. They covered The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air (we all sang along), Killing Me Softly, and ended with a very awesome cover of Bohemian Rhapsody (got the set list).
3. RHCP: Just way better than the last time they played here. Had more energy and more funk. A very good set by them.
4. Walden: Watch for these guys in the future. They started my Croo's day off Thursday and they were solid. Loved there whole band drum solo (got the set list as well). 5 was a tie...
5. Magic City Hippies: They were a cross between Beck & The Beastie Boys and they did not disappoint. The crowd was totally into them and when they played Fanfare, it was a party at there show.
5. Waker: They rocked The Who Stage with a DMB style flare. Great musicians with a killer sax player. Another band to watch for sure (got the set list also).
Honorable Mention: U2 (not a fan but liked it for what it was) & July Talk (There crowd interactions were great.)

In no order: Kidjo (Criminally unattended, great set) CSH (have been looking forward to seeing them for awhile) Orwells (2nd time, much bigger crowd, better set, really fun way to kick off Thursday) RHCP (I like them fine and I enjoyed myself, hate all you want. Wouldve like Bridge/Otherside, but Aeroplane/I wanna be your dog/Give it away/soul to squeeze was fine for me.) Lorde (the delay sucked, bummed we had to miss all the jazz, but that was a pretty great set, I feel like by her next album she could headline a bigger fest) Superjam (love me some batiste, Get up offa/can i kick it/time on my side were all great, miles better than last year)
Really liked the Twigs, was looking forward to it and wasn't disappointed. The Head & the Heart definitely improved from the last couple of times I've seen them in '14/'15. Mandolin Orange doing Cowgirl in the Sand was a great moment for me. Was really looking forward to The xx, but was unfortunately deep in the middle of a getting sick/puking and rallying, so every drum kick and bass line was like torture, but I pulled it together for Loud Places and Dangerous. Skepta exceeded my expectations, and I would say he was the best rapper I saw all weekend (Chance/DRAM). Castles had a killer set, 2nd time seeing them without Alice, but as someone said before, vocals aren't the focus there and was fine missing Flatbush to see again. Turkuaz was intense, the first few songs were just BAM BAM BAM, and they dressed like Clue characters, win/win. Klangstof was great, fun to pit, hope they get big. Khruangbin might've had some of the best banter, and some of the chillest songs, got the Houston shout out, I was also glad to see the crowd be as big as it was, a little worried it would be unattended. Umph was tight, the Thunderkiss/Relax/Have a Cigar mashup (huge missed opportunity for "Which one's Umph?" but small detail), watched from the back but the lights were nuts. Weeknd was great, I had no problem with him closing and I am neither the young audience or a huge fan, but he's got a pretty big run of hits and him singing his banter was fun. T&S exceeded my expectations, I don't know too much about them but they were a lot of fun.
Secret on the pit line is out I guess, lines for all the headliners were huge, the Travis one started before Margo at the latest 3, which I thought was bananas.
Also I really thought everyone's covers were on point which I didn't feel last year. Kidjo, the Jam, Cozmo doing Verve, Twigs doing Prine, Margo doing Kristofferson, Mandonlin doing Neil, Chance doing Kanye, RHCP doing Stooges (would've like the whole thing though), Umph doing White Zombie/Floyd/Mugatoo, Barclay doing Mos/Busta was fun for me, Backup doing what seemed like a 20 minute version of Fame in the camp. I even heard Marshmello doing the Superfreak/Bad and Boujee remix while walking to Umph.

U2 - nearly brought to tears during the beginning of Where the Streets have no name. Couldnt not believe how good this was. This might be a hot take, but the combination of U2->PtM was more enjoyable than LCD->Tame last year. PtM blew Tame out of the water and U2 was at least on a similar playing field as LCD.
AK Remain in Light- was anyone else on the right side? Underattended for sure, but idk if Ive seen that high of a percentage of a crowd dancing so goofily at any show ever. The 30 people closest to me at one point of Born Under Punches were all getting after it. My brother was unfamiliar with the artist and turned to me halfway through saying "this is the best sounding thing Ill hear all weekend, wish I would have been ready for it." Safe to say she totally Burned Down the House.
BBNG- Ill start by saying that This Tent is my new least favorite stage at Roo. Sound paled in comparison to That Tent all weekend. It should be a known thing when the schedule drops that youll want your fav mid sized acts to be in That Tent. The bass to sax mixing was horiffic, but somehow these guys managed to overcome that. The build-ups and climaxes at this show were so much fun. The kaytranada track is my least favorite of theirs on record, but it may have been a top 3 song of the weekend for me.
PtM- They played a pretty standard setlist, but seemed way more into it than they were at Shaky Knees. I was impressed with how into I was even though they were following a run of Kidjo, xx, U2 late at night.
Klangstof- Every bit as epic as youd want it to be. Easy pit access. Havent seen much about them on hear and Im surprised.
The XX- Very similar to my Shaky Knees view of their show. Way more fun live. There is a slight lull in the middle of their set, but once you get to Dangerous you know its go time. Loud Places absolutely blasting from the what stage was a hell of a time.
The Weeknd- Not quite coherent enough to properly rank this, but McCartney Live and Let Die esque fireworks during I Feel It Coming was so fun, as was the whole set. Hardest I danced all weekend. Really just left it all on the court for this one since I was fairly certain it'd be my last Roo show ever.
After those 7 there is a big Tier cut-off so here is just some other stuff I enjoyed in no order:
Car Seat headrest did their standard thing. Sing alongs were fun and the moment when that girl went on stage to play cowbell was really cool.
Khraungbin was a nice relaxing show btw klangstof and csh.
I missed the first few songs of Twin Limb, but when I got there I was nearly brought to tears. Im not huge on this band, but it sounded every bit as epic as Klangstof with better and more emotional vocals. Really wish I could have made this whole thing.
Orwells / White Reaper / Royal Blood - You pretty much know what youre getting into here. Great fun. The best moments to come from these were Out of the Black and a massive Jam from the Orwells to conclude their show. As a side note, my brother helped hold up the lead singer as he crowd surfed and got a perfect view of his ballsack through his romper. After Lemon Twigs, we were talking with him and my brother told him of this as a joke and the orwells dude replied "haha hope they got in your mouth."
Really enjoyed the Lemon Twigs but I thought there we highs and lows. The first singer is leagues better than the second. He should stay on the mic for the full show. Also, they should end shows with Great Snake. Its clearly a top 3 song of theirs and playing a new song nobody recognizes is a meh move for a closer.
Welles was a good start to the weekend. Great cover of Father John Misty (Hollywood Forever).
Wasnt feeling Mike K or Future Islands though both were either my fault or the stage's fault.
Chance was good not great. Dear rappers: finish all of your lines. Or at least 50% of them. Very religiously charged as well.
I thought RHCP was better than expected. Was really into for the first 20 mins or so and then they started reeling off a bunch of shit I either dont know or care for. Michael Jordan once said something to the effect of "I always kept in mind that every time I played, there was a kid in the crowd that was seeing me for the first and last time. So I always wanted to make sure that kid got the best show possible." Play Under the Bridge at all festival headlining sets. Sorry if this is "shut up and play the hits", but you arent a headliner because of your insane musical talents and technical ability like say Pearl Jam and The Dead. You are headliners because of your songwriting from 15+ years ago and a handful of key songs in particular.
Split between Flume, SJ and Umph. All good. Wish I dedicated my late night to the SJ. It was fantastic while I was there.
Finally, Backup Planet was absolutely shitting on foes in the campgrounds late night Saturday. I stayed for about a half hour due to exhaustion, but my lord they were sick.
Overall this lineup exceeded my expectations musically, but I did note to myself on sunday "damn I havent gotten super excited for a single act as they walked on stage." Thats how I knew something was slightly off this year compared to others.

Top sets for me were U2, Angelique Kidjo (kind of a last minute choice to go to this over Tove Lo, and I'm glad), The Weeknd (whose old stuff is among my favorite of all time, but since he played mainly newer stuff I was expected to be a bit disappointed--I was blown away), Umphrey's McGee (late night), and probably Red Hot Chili Peppers (who I've always been a fan of, but were disappointing at Lolla last year. They really felt into it this show)
Some other great sets I caught were James Vincent McMorrow, DRAM, Front Bottoms, White Reaper, Gallant, Twiddle, Future Islands, Claude VonStroke, and Lorde.
1. Backup Planet: They played pretty massive hours in the campgrounds altogether at Bonnaroo,(1-4 one night, 9-12 the next) but there 45 minute set Sunday literally melted my face and had everyone rocking, plus they gave me a shout-out.
I walked past this after Umphrey's Saturday and they sounded awesome. I was exhausted but still a little wired so I was expecting to not fall asleep right away. My tent was near them so I was looking forward to laying down in my tent and listening to it. They started this sick Fame jam that I was really enjoying, when suddenly my neighbors got back and started blasting dubstep at 3:30am. They had a huge speaker system powered by a generator so it was like stage-level loud totally drowned out Backup Planet. And that's the problem with the 3am stop time in Centeroo

100% agree with you on the part about RHCP being WAY better at roo than Lolla last year. I was into it this time start to finish.
