The lead guy from Refused came out in the crowd at some point and was pointing the mic at people during a sing a long, he walked right up to me, got a bar or two in, and then just slinked back into the crowd.
Update: New top show of the year 12/31 Phish at MSG
It started with getting out of work an hour early due to being slow and nobody else in the department wanting to leave so I jumped. Met with friends coming into the show at my place, went on cash or trade found a ticket for under face at 6:30 (show started 8:14). Get ticket realize my seat is a killer location and allows me to also hang with said friends due to the fact that I had to pass their spot to get to mine. Awesome neighbors at both spots. To top it all off, Phish reminded me why I am such a huge fan by playing the 3rd best show I've seen them do out of 76. Here are a few selections:
First one is the leadup to midnight with the building and launching of the ship
1. Patti Smith @ State Theatre, Sydney, April 10th
I saw Patti (my queen!) three times this year - two of the shows, she performed Horses at the luxurious State Theatre in Sydney, and one was a double-header with Courtney Barnett in Melbourne. Every show was fantastic, but her second show in Sydney was a top three concert of my life. She turned that palatial theatre into a grungy CBGB’s dancefloor circa 1977.
So what made night two at the State Theatre so special? Dig, if you will, a picture…
The closing track of Horses is Elegie, a funereal song dedicated to the dead. When Patti performs the track live, she calls out the names of loved ones and contemporaries who have passed away. It’s an ever-evolving song, which lately pays homage to Lou Reed and David Bowie and Prince, whose names draw some of the biggest applause.
At the next appropriate lull between songs, I called out to Patti that Prince had performed two of the last concerts of his life at the State Theatre, and that I thought her tribute was perfect. I was nervous, because she’d told many others who’d shouted out for the mere sake of shouting out to shut up, in so many words. But she asked me to repeat myself, and seemed quite humbled by that fact. Then she started asking me about myself.
She said darling, tell me your name, I told her my name. She whispered to me, I told her my name. And my name was, and my name was, and my name was, and my name was… the same as her son’s. And Patti said I could be her son - fuckin’ SWOOOOONN.
Then, as if all that wasn’t enough, she said “well… we know a Prince song”, and launched into her sombre version of “When Doves Cry”. Everyone around me was patting my back and thanking me for calling out to Patti as I stood there with a dazed, goofy grin on my face.
After the show, she was greeting fans in the first couple rows. I reached out for a handshake, and she clasped my palm with both of her hands and whispered “take it, take it” and smiled widely at me. I realised she was palming me her guitar pick, which I clumsily grasped and pocketed. I now count that personalised pick among my most treasured possessions. I walked to the bus stop afterwards in a dreamlike fugue with a thousand-watt smile.
And the little boy's face lit up with such naked joy That the sun burned around his lids and his eyes were like two suns, White lids, white opals, seeing everything just a little bit too clearly…
2. Paul McCartney @ Qudos Bank Arena, Sydney, December 12th
If you’ve seen Paul, then you know. This was my fab fourth Paul concert, my first one not at Fenway Park - and I got to share it with my favourite Beatlemaniac, Monie . We’d bonded over our mutual Beatles love early on, and dreamed about seeing Paul together someday, not knowing if it would ever actually happen. But happen it did, so we splurged on good seats and we each heard a few songs we’d never heard in all our other Paul shows. It was a very special night.
3. Nick Murphy @ Sydney Opera House, Sydney, June 3rd
Nick stole the show at Laneway in February, which convinced me to check him out at Vivid. I almost didn’t, but there was a single seat left in the front row, dead centre, that kept calling my name. He premiered his new EP in full, which sounded great live.
4. Elton John @ WIN Stadium, Wollongong, September 24th
A big one crossed off the bucket list for me, and where else but the bustling metropolis that is the Gong? We sat on the lawn and crocodile rocked beachside. Monie got to witness a beautiful and very Australian moment as Elton played Waltzing Matilda with the entire stadium taking vocal duties.
5. Peter Hook and the Light @ Metro Theatre, Sydney, October 2nd
Performing Unknown Pleasures and Closer, with an opening set of New Order material. This was my third Peter Hook show, and he’s never failed to deliver, so I convinced Monie to come with me and stake out a front row spot. She’s a peach for indulging me.
6. Adele @ ANZ Stadium, Sydney, March 10th
I almost didn’t go to this, but I found a secondhand nosebleed selling for face value at the last minute. It was the biggest concert crowd I’ve ever been a part of - just a smidge shy of 100,000 people - and that alone was something to behold. To put that in context, that means that about 0.4% of everyone in Australia was at the stadium that night. With good reason, too… my word, how her voice filled that massive space. I’m a bit more of a casual fan, so I only knew about half the songs she played, which made me feel somewhat lost when a stadium full of people knew every word - but it was a good lost.
7. Glass Animals @ Enmore Theatre, Sydney, January 25th
I don’t think even Glass Animals were expecting this type of reception. The venue they played is in a hipster part of town that loves their Glass Animals, and it was the night before Australia Day, so the crowd went hard. Pineapples everywhere. I bought this ticket thinking it would eliminate a conflict at Laneway… but they were so damn good, it just convinced me to see them again at the festival. Oops.
8. Tears For Fears @ Allstate Arena, Chicago, May 15th
9. Courtney Barnett @ Festival Hall, Melbourne, April 20th
10. Hall & Oates @ Allstate Arena, Chicago, May 15th
11. Tame Impala @ Laneway Festival, Sydney, February 4th
12. LCD Soundsystem @ Hordern Pavillion, Sydney, July 24th
13. The Weeknd @ Qudos Bank Arena, Sydney, December 3rd
14. Air @ Sydney Opera House, Sydney, May 30th
15. The XX @ Express Live, Columbus, May 5th
16. The B-52s @ Hordern Pavillion, Sydney, February 9th
17. Sia @ Allianz Stadium, Sydney, December 2nd
18. Spoon @ Red Eye Records, Sydney, March 22nd
19. Neil DeGrasse Tyson @ ICC, Sydney, July 29th
20. The Book of Mormon @ Princess Theatre, Melbourne, April 22nd
