Having made it to the West, it was now time to head down the coast. First stop: Crater Lake National Park. We left early Sunday morning, and this ended up being a real slog of a drive for me. Allie really wasn't feeling well and napped for a decent part of the 9-hour drive, and by the time we got to the park, I was beat. There were a lot of long forest roads with no turnouts or intersections - certainly not designated urine receptacles, which led to me being very uncomfortable a time or two - and I was very, very relieved when we finally got to the Park, which rested on the tippy-top of the mountain. We go to check in, and the park ranger was THE NICEST PERSON I have ever met in the public sphere. He would have been incredibly annoying if he weren't oozing with genuine happiness and sincerity. I don't remember his name but we'll call him Pat. Thanks, Pat.
We drive around to claim a campsite, though I should say that "campsite" is a very generous term. Due to later-than-usual snowfall, the park still had a considerable amount of snow. And my considerable I mean that our fire pit and all nearby dirt was completely covered in snow, so we had to set up camp on the pavement where the car was parked. This wasn't terrible in and of itself, except for the fact that the snow had just begun to melt for the season, so MOSQUITOES. WERE. EVERYWHERE. Fuckin' relentless, I tell you. And it was cold. So I was wearing leggings under sweatpants along with a T-shirt, long-sleever, and hoodie - all doused in OFF - and the buggers were still biting the crap outta me. We made do though, and ended up frying some turkey burgers over a collapsible portable stove. Then we drove up to see the lake.
Because of the late snowfall, only two different lookouts around the lake were open, which meant the views were limited. I'd like to rave about how beautiful it was, but between the mosquitoes (no seriously, they were bad), the cold, the fact that only two of the twenty-eight lookouts were open, and a fight Allie and I had the next morning, my memory of Crater Lake isn't particularly rosy. We did bang in the tent that night though, so that was cool. I ended up randomly waking up at about 4 in the morning, which was actually kinda perfect because I really wanted to see the sunrise over the lake. Allie wasn't up for it, so I grab my camera and tripod and drove up. The only other guy up there was a (maybe former) military man turned amateur photographer who was basically just solo-gigging across the country taking pictures. He talked too much for 4:30 in the morning, but he was nice. Not as nice as Pat though.
After coming back to camp Allie eventually woke up and we presumably had breakfast (I won't pretend to remember what), and then drove back up to see the lake in the full daylight. We ended up having a pretty big fight on the way there that spoiled the morning for me; I won't give all the juicy details but suffice it to say that if you ask me for directions to someplace I've been just a few hours ago, and then repeatedly tell me my directions are wrong, intentionally miss the turn I say we need to go down because you don't believe me and then pull over to look at a map, I'm not going to be very happy with you. Hmph.
Afterwards we packed up camp and started heading down the Oregon Coast Highway towards our next stop, Redwood National Forest.
I believe it was on the way to the Redwood National Forest that we had Nitro Cold Brew Coffee from Starbucks. It didn't even need ice. It was cold, foamy, and life-changing.

We made it to DC and back without fighting. I think that's a great accomplishment.
Oh. My. God. This was by far the heaviest pizza I've ever eaten. It was absolutely delicious, but by the end of the first slice I was already slowing down. By the second I was totally donezo. Pizza - 0, Jaz - 1. We get a box to take the leftovers home, and walk back downtown to take some pictures as the sun set.
I'm finally getting around to reading all the posts in this thread and I love it very much (and I love the title especially!), especially after seeing all the pictures, BUT just a quick addition: my grandmother, who is a lifelong Illinoisan, had Lou Malnati's for the first time last year and could not stop raving to our family about how it was the best deep dish she'd ever had, how the cheese, tomatoes, etc. were all the freshest imaginable. I think you really captured the essence of eating Chicago pizza for the first time in this post.
anyway, Lou Malnati's is nowhere near the best Chicago pizza and that title easily goes to Aurelio's. all the same, I love all these posts and am excited to finish reading them!
As we headed from Crater Lake towards the Redwood National Forest, we stopped at a ranger station on the way to get directions and have lunch. It was about twenty degrees warmer at the station we stopped at, so I changed out of my sweats into shorts/T-shirt in the parking lot. An older couple driving by gave me a dirty look. I have since decided to interpret that look as one of unadulterated lust.
The park ranger (who was also not as nice as Pat) gave us directions to the trail we wanted to do, and getting there was a bit of a doozy. It was a ways down an old unpaved road that was riddled with potholes, so essentially the whole time I'm driving and swerving at a blistering 10 miles per hour while dodging booby traps and oncoming traffic. It was fun.
As soon as we got on the trail, it was like we were in a different world. The sun cast a warm glow through the canopy of the forest, and everything was illuminated in a golden hue. And the trees were huge! I mean, I knew they would be - that's the point - but it was definitely something you had to see to really understand. We meandered along the trail, taking lots of pictures on the way, in pursuit of our destination: Boy Scout Tree. Boy Scout Tree was named after Betsy Ross's hiking expedition in 1874 - she discovered it while walking with the Yorkshire Terrier, Scout. It's rumored that when she stumbled upon it she said "Boy, Scout, that sure is a big tree," hence the name. #TrueHistoryFacts.
After spending some time at the BS Tree, we headed back towards the car so that we could make it to our campsite. And on the way back we saw one of the most iconic and beautiful things I'll ever see in my life: A CHICKEN CROSSING THE ROAD! As soon as I saw it, I wept tears of pure joy, and in my divine rapture I neglected to ask him why. Hashtag regrets.
We get to the campsite, which was huge and right next to the bathrooms, which we were thankful for because we're both hashtag lazy. After setting up camp we go to get campfire, only to discover that they're completely sold out. Fuck. So we hop back in the car and drive the twenty minutes into town, where there was luckily one bundle of firewood left for us. After getting back, I accomplished the incredibly manly feat of getting the fire to start on the first try. I was hashtag proud.
I lied. After the Redwoods, our next stop was Napa/Sonoma Valley. We decide to take the iconic Pacific Coast Highway down, because it's iconic and we are supposed to be doing iconic shit. Duh. I didn't know this going into it, but this road was WINDY. Not windy like there's a lot of air blowing but windy like it had more curves than this ass when I'm wearing my Calvin Kleins. Anywho yea there were a lot of turns. It was indeed scenic, but for two nutters who have been spending a lot of time driving for the past two weeks, going 25 MPH around hairpin turns for two hours was pretty fatiguing. But before we got off the PCH, there was one thing I needed to do - stick my feet in the Pacific Ocean!
I was so giddy. The water was cold as all get-out but I still went about knee deep. This was officially the furthest West I'd ever been. From there we hopped onto a speedier highway as we went towards Napa Valley. Being the seat-pants flyers that we were, we didn't really have accommodations or plans set up. We just wanted wine. After stopping at another Starbucks (no Nitro here, unfortunately), we eventually found an AirBnb that looked like a good place. I couldn't actually get in contact with the host after booking the room, and when we arrived the host wasn't there, but luckily she told her roommate what was up and she was able to help get us settled. It wasn't until later that I actually received the host's message that she had sent hours previous. Yay technology!
Allie and I each showered and got the car off of our bodies and set out for a place to eat. At this point I don't remember the name of it, but we were able to sit outside and split a bottle of wine, and we each split our entrees. Pretty sure one of us got fish and the other got pasta. So if you're ever in some random part of Sonoma Valley and you come across a place with good fish and pasta, that's probably where I was at. Good chance. Afterwards we came back to the AirBnb and hung out on the back deck with our host's cat, then we came in and slept. This might have been just a small stop on our journey, but it was a very pleasant one.
