That’s right. She did use trinity for dishes that called for it. I don’t really understand what a carrot does in lieu of the bell pepper. I like carrots, but would it be the sugar from the rendering and sweating that adds the flavor? Her grandmother was from France, and her mom spoke equally good French and English. I guess South LA culture maybe comes in waves. Because I use way more seasoning than what I ever ate growing up, and my kids all do as well when they cook.

We ended up at Morrison's (cafeteria food, I don't know if there are other Morrison's or not, but it's comfort food for long time Mobilians).
Fish almondine, which at Morrison's means heavily battered thick white fish with a few almond slivers on top, and real tartar sauce. Mashed potatoes, green peas. It was fantastic. Wife basically got the same thing but with cornbread and greens.

I love grits. I just don’t like cheese grits because I don’t like most cheese. Preference is for water or stock based grits over milk. And I like them with butter, salt and pepper along with some crumbled in real bacon.
One of our coworkers had a birthday today and wanted Thai. So we went to Sukho. I opted for the red curry chicken at level 4 (of 5) heat. I don’t really understand their levels of heat. I mean the “4” (very hot) isn’t really as hot as hot sauce. And I’m sure in south and Southeast Asia they make curries with peppers that most Americans would not be able to eat more than a bite of. I’m Lilly white, and my mom cooked French not Cajun because she wasn’t Cajun. Salt, pepper, onions, garic, celery and bell peppers were in dishes. Cayenne and hot sauce were not. Even still, I always liked spice to a point. Like I’m not going to sit around munching on serrano or habenero peppers though I’ll eat or cook with them when I want some heat.
Sukho doesn’t give you a return on Thai Hot (5 of 5) and warns you on the menu that if you order it, you bought it. But even the one time I had that level, I didn’t find it unbearable.
LMAO, we used to hit the one on Magazine pretty often by the old Cadiz crib and Thai hot got pretty intense the one or two times we went for it. And Kelly and I both are pretty tolerant on that front. But I agree, the step down to four wasn't much of anything. I guess they're just eyeballing that shit and you get what you get.

The pattern I notice with Thai places is when they first open they start out with the maximum, or "thai hot" heat level being extremely, unbearably spicy, which means I'm quite happy ordering one or two levels below that to get an appropriate amount of spicy flavor. But over time, the "thai hot" heat level decreases in spiciness, as do the other levels, meaning even if I order thai hot, it's not really spicy at all. Whenever I ask servers about this the answer is always dumbshit customers ordering food that is too spicy and sending it back.
Having said that, one of my favorite restaurants in Mobile is a Nepalese/Indian place called "Yak The Kathmandu Kitchen". They've been open multiple years at this point and have never messed with the heat level. It's mild, medium, or spicy, and spicy is really truly for that 10% of the population that really wants super spicy food. I order medium and it's always perfect.
Not looking to be hungry today. They fd me over and gave someone else my plate so they comped 2 white chocolate macadamia nut cookies even though I didn’t bitch.
So Postjack, I made my 3rd trip in about 3 years to Restaurant Iron. Easily the best meal I’ve had in a couple years. Amuse-bouche was a slice of cucumber with some goat cheese herbed mousse and some oils. Crazy. Was with a buddy, and for appetizers we had this crazy arugula corn salad with crispy blackeyed peas and some type of corn vinaigrette and a creme fresh checkerboard and then some crispy oysters with some type of mustard ravigotte encircled by some red and green oils and some small sweet peppers. Then he got some scallops with strawberry pico and I got the cowboy ribeye with crimini mushrooms and basil oil topped with grilled asparagus. Stupid good. Then we got some Nutella pie and this crazy ass cheesecake with chocolate blueberries on top of swirls of chocolate and caramel. I don’t know. Presentation was better than anything in NOLA, and this may have hit 4.5 stars at this point. Damn that Fn place is good.
Since I broke my wrist I work less hours and eat less. I feel constantly hungry because of my wonky schedule. We went to the Poke Chan on Tuesday though, and that was fucking amazing. They have cooked poke bowls (fried chicken poke bowl, whoa!) as well as raw so it has something for everyone. If you go there and they have it, get the fried yellowtail collar...I don't eat cooked fish often and that shit was so fucking good.

White Beans and Rice with Cajun smoked sausage and cornbread for $10.99 today. I will not be hungry because the platter weighs in at approximately 6 pounds. No way I'm going to eat more than a 3rd of it which still seems excessive when you figure you're putting 2 pounds of food in.

I'm so glad we had dinner at our house. I couldn't imagine having to go somewhere else after I devoured my yearly 4500 calorie (easily) Thanksgiving meal.

Bubby's Tribeca - Great place, upscale dinerish, this was the place we both ordered pancakes for our first meal. We ate at 3pm and it was our first meal since 4am that morning so we fucked up and went full carb sugar mode. It was delicious but it was too much. On top of the three huge pancakes apiece we also got four biscuits. Self-proclaimed best biscuit in NYC. It was a pretty good biscuit. A woman sitting next to us was from London and had never had a proper southern USA biscuit before and was losing her mind.
Prince Street Pizza - This place was an absolute madhouse when we went in. Stood in line for like half an hour and these guys had no idea what the hell they were doing. Tiny place filled to the brim with people waiting on orders. By the time we got our slices we were so disappointed in the experience that it was hard to enjoy the pizza. Really it was fine. I guess we didn't get the fancy square pizza everyone online talks about, but what we had was just OK. No pictures of the pizza because we were cramming it into our mouth because we needed to rush to UCB.
Zuckers Bagels and Smoked Fish - really excellent. Smoked fish is something I always have to get in NYC. Brief line in the morning but food came quick and was great:
Cafe Mogador Williamsburg - dope indian brunch place, met a local friend of ours over here. popular place but we got a seat after a short wait. everything on the plate was fresh and tasty:
Nobu Nobu Nobu Nobu Nobu Nobu Nobu (downtown) - we ate at Nobu in Las Vegas last summer and had a fantastic experience. This was our big fancy meal for the trip so we did the chef's tasting menu. I don't remember what everything was but all of it was amazing. We probably overall had a better experience in Vegas because our waiter was incredible and more personal than in NYC, but food wise everything was just as good. Also in Las Vegas it helped that after dinner we walked twenty feet across the casino to see Nine Inch Nails, so we were hyped for the show during dinner.
Milk Bar upper west side - cereal milk ice cream lived up to the hype, would eat again and again. honestly though the cookies, crack pie, and cake balls were all way too sweet, and I'm a guy who likes sweet. but everyone should try cereal milk soft serve.
Totto Ramen hells kitchen - OK so we had just done Sleep No More, which is one of the best things i've ever done and everybody should do it. It was maybe 11pm and we were super hungry. I thought I'd heard about this place from Fred but not sure. Tiny hole in the wall place off a quiet street this time of night, cash only, cheap. It was the best meal we had our entire trip, and the happiest we were our entire trip.
Ippudo Ramen midtown - had such a good ramen experience we decided to do ramen again before Mike Birbiglia's show (which was awesome). Great ramen, would recommend, Totto was better:
Katz Deli - final meal before we headed to JFK, and it was awesome. we went early to beat the crowd. my second time at Katz, obviously the pastrami is one of the best sandwiches of all time:
and i think that is pretty much everything we ate. all in all a very strong food trip. however we ate at maybe 15% of the places on our list, we have a lot more food tourism to do in NYC, so I'm sure we'll be back sooner rather than later.

sleep no more was so great, i definitely want to do it again. i now know why people online are so cagey about describing it, the only way to do it is to go in and just experience it. in fact it's remarkable how popular it is considering how little actual information you can find online about it.
the only advice i could find online was:
1. follow an actor 2. if you hear extremely loud techno music go to it
well the "extremely loud techno music" was actually "extremely loud drum and bass music" but regardless of genre i didn't actually need that advice, because i will always go to that music. and it was fucking awesome.
as i mentioned in the food post we also saw birbiglia's broadway show "The New One" and it was of course fantastic. like a lot of birbigs stuff it was stand up but with that one man show type of narrative element. i imagine it will be on netflix eventually and i'll be here pushing hard for everyone to watch it. in the meantime, if anyone here hasn't seen his last netflix special "thank god for jokes" you definitely should.
only other theater type thing we did was GOAT at UCB. it was fine, a few laughs, but hey it was $12, can't beat that.

my first trip to milk bar, i had an affogato with pretzel soft serve, and it's still one of the best things i've ever tasted. recently, i've been starting to bake my way through christina tosi's books. i made crack pie for the first time for my husband's birthday/thanksgiving, and it was ridiculously sweet and delicious, but a tiny sliver at a time was plenty.
