In regards to the state of the overall lineup, I am looking for that artist that helps me explain what I am looking forward to in July. Inevitably I tell my "Muggle" colleagues that I am super excited to go to Newport again in July and they say, "Oh I have heard of that festival, who is playing?" Right now, the only artist that comes close to having Muggle level recognition is Brandi Carlisle and I bet 70% of people my age (40's) struggle with getting her confused with Belinda Carlisle.
I am super excited about 80% of the artists but it is hard to explain to someone who hasn't heard of any of them how these artists all bring something to the table that is essentially good music. the essence of music. Hard not to sound too much like a jerk when I can't name an artist that they have heard of. maybe I can sing a few bars of that one Passenger song that everyone knows.
In past years it was Flight of the Conchords, Alabama Shakes, Hozier, Roger Waters, Patty Smith, Wilco, Fleet Foxes, Nathaniel Rateliff and the Night Sweats, Suzanne Vega, Violent Femmes, Graham Nash.
Mostly headliners I guess and we are bound to have a few in the last few weeks.
But I am ready for one of the classic Folk heroes. Joan Baez, Arlo Guthrie, etc.
Also, on a side note, both Lucius and Hiss Golden Messenger were on 10 Bingo Cards. In terms of ranking our 'wisdom of the crowds' intelligence, 50% of our top 6 picks have been named. Really would be dissapointed if Margo Price and Langhorne Slim don't join them.

You know I'm always the first to step in when someone gives the lineup a hard time but I not going to this time. I'm very happy with what I see so far but I do understand some folks frustration. It's understandable given that a lot of the bigger artists are veterans to the festival who regulars have already seen.
Some people on here tried to describe something about the mix this year that doesn't quite sit well. I think it's eclectic as it usually is with a good mix of new and old as well and various genres. Maybe it's that within some of the genres there are a few clusters of performers who are a little too alike. Maybe it's, as some pointed out, that some performers (not naming names but definitely a few) are fantastic performers but don't have strong backlog of good songs to back it up. Maybe it's leaning a little too heavy on 2015 artists. It was a great year but too many repeats makes things feel stale. I understand the beauty of this festival is the relationships it builds with performers. Some years that brings back lots of artists I could watch every day and some years it appeals more to other people's tastes. There are some performers I'm delighted to have back. Sturgill for example. The weird thing is I kind of agree with people voicing concern a little but I can't quite figure out why. I look at the lineup and its great as usual so why do I feel this way? The only reason I got off the fence as a reader to start contributing here was to defend the festival. I trust this is temporary. Newport always makes me feel a fool for doubting and I trust this vague nervous feeling will be the same. It's worth remembering that the unanounced artists last year could have made a fantastic lineup themselves. At the risk of raising unwarranted expectation, maybe Newport Folk Festival are up to something. Maybe not. At the end of the day, if you love on average only 25% to 30% of the performers you'll have a great time because there are several stages. I'm loving around 75% right now so I should be all set. Bonus territory from here on in.

Not to diminish what were clearly very genuine feelings brought on by the Parkland tragedy, but I wondered if Jay's tweets back in February weren't also partially intended to prepare us for this lineup. Quote: "this year is very much about folk family. Feel we need to circle the wagons a bit, recharge regroup and never retreat. a lot of folk alum specifically asked to come back with everything happening they needed to feel a safe place to speak their minds. We told them the door is open."
This will be our fifth consecutive NFF (but not our fifth anniversary ) and I definitely feel like there are more repeat artists than the past. Part of the people on this board feeling a little let down, I think, is that most people on this thread have been going for years now. We’re at Jay’s tenth anniversary (so his 11th festival ) and it’s obvious that the relationships he and his staff have built with these artists is what turned it into this incredible experience we all get to have every year. Maybe they’re treating themselves to a little celebration with friends.
Personally, I won’t be sad if this turns out to be a “down” year. Personally, if the festival pulled back from the giant surprise names like Jack White and Roger Waters, I’d still go every year for as long as I can swing it (coming from the west coast now) because what could be better than hanging out in a beautiful place with people I love drinking drinks and listening to music I enjoy?
But I get why people are underwhelmed. There isn’t a Jack White, a Roger Waters, a big unknown like Grandma’s Hands sitting in the middle of the lineup driving hype. To that I’ll repeat what I said here a few days ago: 2016 the last two weeks of announcements brought Elvis Costello, Ryan Adams, Alabama Shakes and Patti Smith. There’s still time.
Sorry for the long comment, and I hope I successfully hid the long comments I was responding to. Last thing is a request: I’m not great at trawling the lineups and artist schedules (hence no bingo card) but I’d be curious what the actual percentage of repeats is, compared to the last few years. Anyone up to it?
I lied one last thought: realizing this is Jay’s tenth anniversary, think there is anything we the fans could do to say thank you beyond showing up?

Just quickly went through the last two years. It depends what you consider a repeat (with something like American Acoustic or other collabs), but it seems like we're about on par with past years right now. Which is about a third of the lineup being repeats.
However, it does seem like there are a handful more we'll be seeing this year like Deer Tick, Margo Price, Julien Baker, and Langhorne so we'll probably end up with a higher percentage.
Haven't done a complete review, but Mr.PotatoTrooper is cleaning up in Bingo.
rjgreen88 is tied with me for overall artists! (15 including the free space)
The true winner will be first to get a full line though, which didn't happen the last two years. I believe I'm currently the closest for that. Just need two more for a full line. That being said, I will be buying myself beers all weekend, so I'm already a winner. I can't really get myself a prize ahaha. If I do win, whoever comes in second will get the glory.

You definitely deserve a prize if you win (I'll definitely treat you to a beer)! Don't think my lines are lining up well for an actual Bingo.
Any one going to the Gulls & Stars event tonight in NYC?

If you win and I see you at Newport Blues (probably making a play for Friday tickets this year as Isbell/Sturgill don't interest me) you'll be getting a beer from me.
Upcoming Shows: August 7: Green Day/Smashing Pumpkins/Rancid/The Linda Lindas August 30: Waxahatchee/Snail Mail/Tim Heidecker September 17: Pearl Jam/Glen Hansard September 24: Idles/English Teacher
Another band I feel like has been at Newport every year.. they were just not that great at the Deer Tick Jane Pickens show last year, honestly found them incredibly mediocre.
I really hope announcements start picking up soon.
Wow. I was there and had the exact opposite reaction, I thought they were fantastic
I had the exact same response - even typed it up here and then deleted before posting because I didn’t want to seem argumentative. But yeah, I guess music is subjective! I though that HGM set was fantastic.
Will this be our first special set? Is Newport keeping a headliner announcement secret until 10? A band without lyrics? Or did the social media intern sleep in?

I'm hoping for a special one too. Though I think the Rachael & Vilray announcement didn't have a preceding clue. But I have my fingers crossed for something snazzy
This was announced at the exact moment that Leon Bridges announced an upcoming tour, one show with Jon Batiste, that starts the week after Newport (the show with Jon Batiste is not near the time of Newport). The tour includes a Boston date in October. My guess is we get Leon Bridges as a special guest.

Just make Newport Folk itself the main attraction when talking to normies at work. The day that a festival starts catering to the lowest common denominator, is when they start to decline.

I’m so ready to hear that chill-inducing cover of “Ohio” that Batiste, Bridges and Clark did live.
I was thinking it would be more like Speak Out than a specific artist tribute. When you go to the website, the pic seems too political to just be a Sam Cooke set.

My assumption as well, although maybe a little more soul-themed given the participants.
It's also in the same time slot as Speak Out apparently. Pre-HL on Sunday. So we still have a headliner coming which means Sunday is crazy stacked

I don’t disagree with that thought but the lineup is suited for soul music and Sam was shot raising the topic of gun violence. Regardless it will be excellent

I agree on the set being heavier on soul. Where'd you see the time slot thing? Sunday is looking really nice

I mean, Sam Cooke was killed because he was angry that a woman wouldn't have sex with him and that sent him into a rage where he busted down a door and attacked a woman working at the hotel he was staying at. She defended herself by killing his crazy ass.

Where did you see set time?
While I am very excited for this set, if this is true it also dashes my remaining hope that I’ll get to see The War on Drugs at the Fort. Such a shame too because the tour lined up perfectly. And would totally fill in what I perceive to be a big gap in this year’s announcements.

I think the Set Time all depends on who's involved. If it's really involving Leon and larger acts, makes sense for Pre-HL. If it's a set group, I'd say it could end up where Grandma's Hands/Tribute to Chuck were.
