Ha! Been waiting for a jazz fest crossover and thought -- no, not Jon Batiste; he's not with Stay Human. Those fools crossed me with the Dap Kings!
After I noted too many B level acts I could see at my local tavern, I was asked what is a Wow for me, and why don't I want to welcome a lot of new people into the family (and then people rooting for acts they know so lots of disparity here). Well, JON BATISTE and THE DAP KINGS is a Wow for me. Remember his last performance with the wireless melodica / dancing with the crowd / If You're Happy and Yo Know It. That's a top ten since 2013 for me! And the great Sharon Jones deserves to be remembered.
But...I also love Brandi. Not worried about a conflict. Time for Brandi to main stage, and I could see Gary Clark, Jr., Buddy Guy and Leon Bridges (and please Susan Tedeschi come home for Sharon) joining this show and a possible HL act. Stoked!
I don’t disagree with that thought but the lineup is suited for soul music and Sam was shot raising the topic of gun violence. Regardless it will be excellent
I mean, Sam Cooke was killed because he was angry that a woman wouldn't have sex with him and that sent him into a rage where he busted down a door and attacked a woman working at the hotel he was staying at. She defended herself by killing his crazy ass.
I agree on the set being heavier on soul. Where'd you see the time slot thing? Sunday is looking really nice

Jon Batiste tweeted alluding to the set, but it was deleted recently. However, it's still up on his instagram:
"Coming back to one of my favorite coastal towns for a very special performance to close the @newportfolkfest on Sunday July 29th. I’ll be playing with @the_dapkings and some INCREDIBLE surprise guests. Will you be there? Tag a friend on the east coast. This will be epic."
So maybe this will be the headlining set? He does say "close the @newportfolkfest". But then again, if he deleted the tweet, maybe he's not closing? Regardless, if it's Pre-HL or HL that means it's going to be really special.
I mean, I’m stoked for the set and it’s going to be a blast. And possibly more enjoyable than if they landed an artist to headline Sunday whose music I have no experience, but...
Sturgill and Jon Batiste (playing cover songs) seem relatively weak for a headlining corps, even by Newport standards. No?

Joined potentially by Leon Bridges, Gary Clark, and not to mention the Dap Kings as a backing band. That's arguably more star studded and relevant than those who performed in the "65 Revisited" set to close out 2015, and on par with the Speak Out! set.

That’s a good point; I forgot about that set being the headlining act.
However, I’m not so sure those acts you mentioned are bigger than Gillian Welch, Jim James, and Colin Meloy. However, it’s not fair to try to make comparisons across surprise guests when we don’t know the surprise guests (so you’re right, I shouldn’t be hasty)
That year also had Roger f’ing Waters as a headliner, which could only be matched this year if the Bruce played a solo Nebraska set. They also had My Morning Jacket and the Decemberists. But, given that MMJ wasn’t even a headliner (and unannounced), we could have something like that too this year when the final lineup/schedule comes out.

I still think it could go either way. Leaning towards pre-HL because it just gives me Speak Out! vibes, but I'll have no issues if this is what closes out the fest. Speak Out easily could've closed last year
Given those vibes, and the fact that I didn’t attend last year but will still seek out the release of that set on record store day, I really hope this Jon Batiste set is also pressed onto vinyl as a special release.
One never know, do one? Buddy Guy in Cohassset on Friday; Darius Rucker in Hartford on Saturday. Who covered "A Change is Gonna Come"? Aretha? No....Beware of expectations.
On another stage, Arlo in Provincetown on the 25th.

The words "to close" are fairly vague, as anyone playing on sunday can say they are "closing" considering it is the last day of the festival. I also heard from the facebook group that Jay introduced them as the penultimate act for sunday. Regardless, I'm still pooling that Batiste pre-headlines and in Jay, I'm putting my trust.

The question is, who would be a suitable follow up to headline after this set? Monsters of Folk is the dream. But I’d love another legend like Prine, especially if Sat. goes to a more modern artist like Bon Iver, Arcade Fire, or Florence
So this seems to scratch my hopes of GCJ into Buddy Guy closing Sunday
Also, Arlo was in RI (Woonsocket) last year during NFF weekend and didn't show at the Fort. I wouldn't expect it this year either, until it actually gets announced.

Maybe Eddie Vedder shows up for a mini set like Roger Waters did? Or at least join in with this set at the end.

He’s mentioned in social media posts within the last year about how Newport has changed or is different now, don’t remember the exact wording. It sounds like he had a bad taste in his mouth re:Newport, I wouldn’t expect him to return soon
edit/ found one of his comments
"Tomorrow morning we'll head back to The Farm in Western Massachusetts for a couple of nights, to visit my kitty cats. Being cats, they won't express any jubilation at my return. At best, they'll acknowledge my return and walk away. Come to think of it, these days the Newport Folk Festival is kind of like my cats."

Not sure anything we learned today rules out Buddy Guy. I didn't read back through the thread fully so maybe I missed something? Given its the 50 year anniversary of him playing Newport and seeing how he's in the area and several artists are announced that fit his genre and how Gary Clark Jr has fairly regularly played with him I'd still be surprised if he isn't there. Could be wrong though.
I'm by no means disappointed by having Jon Batiste and the Dap Kings but if they're headliners, i'd have to say they need kickass special guests considering he is billed third (though solo) for NJF and on the sixith line of billing/sub-headlining for NOJHF. In agreement with DA STRAWMAN, a legendary billing would make Sunday perfect, such as a Buddy Guy or MoF or even Eddie Vedder (a man can dream). Regardless, hopefully Saturday pulls some crazy headliner out of nowhere!
I really am on this nostalgia kick this year. Never understood why Joan Baez didn't play after her induction into the Rock Hall of Fame. And, yes, know of Arlo's comments about NFF. But without getting into specifics, let's just say its more that he hasn't been invited back, than he won't attend. And that saddens me.

Arlo has taken a pretty right wing stance in the last decade or so, and Newport seems to be embracing overtly liberal politics in the Trump era...tough to imagine it being a good fit.
Chance The Rapper at Newport at some point? Crazy talk? A genre divide too far to cross or another opportunity to grow, branch out and be inclusive. I think he's got what it would take to be a fit. The guy has donated millions of his money to public schools. He avoids the large record company pay days and instead plays live a lot to have artistic freedom. I think he's humble and talented enough to be loved by the Newport fans and I think he would get it. I just wonder what others think. Maybe I'm way off on this. Maybe the money he'd ask would be insane. Or maybe not. He's shown on lots of occasions it's not about the money for him. For an idea what it would be like here he is playing NPR Tiny Desk.
He even gives a shout out to Tank And The Bangas saying he saw them on tiny desk.

No he'd definitely work. I've had him on my list of potential artists the last couple years. They could just have him come do spoken word and freestyle in the Museum

This would make me so happy. Coloring Book is one of my favorite albums of the last couple years. Raury sings backing vocals on Blessings 2, so that’s another connection to boot.

Don't get me wrong, I'd love Chance to be at NFF, but I feel like Raury's showing wasn't great...? I didn't go to his performance that year, but heard lackluster reviews. I'd be more curious about the time and place + don't think Raury would be a strong enough connection to make it work. I'm beyond excited for Tank and The Bangas, so if that's in the realm... yes pls!!

I though Raury was phenomenal. The whole row I was on thought he was phenominal. He got standing ovation after standing ovation after standing ovation the whole entire set. It wasn't to everyone's folk music tastes. Never was going to. Someone here pointed out what bugged them about the performance and it bugs me too in hindsight is that the performance was basically karaoke. No band behind him, recorded music etc. That's a fair point. I guess in his defense he's starting out and new to the business. But other than maybe The Oh Hellos, no performer has put as much energy and gave it all on stage in recent years than he did. I predict great things for Raury. He's young eager and learning. The songs on that album were amazing. The music was made for newport. He's a vegan spiritual hippie singing folk rap music blended with beautiful soulful R&B. Jay Sweet was sitting at home watching Colbert the night Trump was on. After this performance he was on the phone trying to get him immediately. There's a point in this performance where he turns around wearing a Mexico jersey to reveal some message about Trump. You can hear the audiences reaction. I guess if he brought the backing singers and musicians in this video his critics would be happier. But counting the standing ovations he got that day most thought he was amazing and didn't care what others thought.
