I agree that it would be awesome to see Raury with that backing band.
But I wouldn’t necessarily put the lack of a backing band on Raury. It’s not like Newport pays artists to bring the whole kitchen sink with them. (This isn’t shade being directed at Newport; just the state of the festival being nonprofit, limited capacity, and relatively affordable tickets).
I am expecting a handful of artists this year that we had hoped would have a killer backing band to show up solo. I just hope Brandi is not one of them.
Raury's set would've been better if he'd been able to sing in tune.
We had this debate before and I respectfully have to disagree. Again, I thought he was spot on key. I owned and listened to the album a lot before the set. Maybe it's hard to notice every note when the singers leaping ten feet across the stage. I still think he left it all on stage that day and the crowd absolutely loved his performance and every one I spoke to on the way out thought he was amazing.

Imagine if they'd internet forums when Dylan went electric lol. Was he the first rapper Newport had?

Video evidence:
Meh. That's like my least favorite of his songs taken on a phone from far back. I try find music videos of live Newport performances and most cell phone clips make the performers sound like shit. If you like I can find some of Roger in 2015 that make it sound like a total crap performance but being there I know it wasn't. Here's literally the first video clip I saw of same set and it's bit more like I remember.
Don't get me wrong, I'd love Chance to be at NFF, but I feel like Raury's showing wasn't great...? I didn't go to his performance that year, but heard lackluster reviews. I'd be more curious about the time and place + don't think Raury would be a strong enough connection to make it work. I'm beyond excited for Tank and The Bangas, so if that's in the realm... yes pls!!
I though Raury was phenomenal. The whole row I was on thought he was phenominal. He got standing ovation after standing ovation after standing ovation the whole entire set. It wasn't to everyone's folk music tastes. Never was going to. Someone here pointed out what bugged them about the performance and it bugs me too in hindsight is that the performance was basically karaoke. No band behind him, recorded music etc. That's a fair point. I guess in his defense he's starting out and new to the business. But other than maybe The Oh Hellos, no performer has put as much energy and gave it all on stage in recent years than he did. I predict great things for Raury. He's young eager and learning. The songs on that album were amazing. The music was made for newport. He's a vegan spiritual hippie singing folk rap music blended with beautiful soulful R&B. Jay Sweet was sitting at home watching Colbert the night Trump was on. After this performance he was on the phone trying to get him immediately. There's a point in this performance where he turns around wearing a Mexico jersey to reveal some message about Trump. You can hear the audiences reaction. I guess if he brought the backing singers and musicians in this video his critics would be happier. But counting the standing ovations he got that day most thought he was amazing and didn't care what others thought.
I just want to state, for posterity, that when I brought him up my only intent was to point out that it's a Chance connection, not to pass judgement one way or the other on his set.
I was curious was reporters said about him at Newport. I guess his critics have a point but I still belive his music is innovative, he writes great songs and his performances are electric. But I'll concede the dude needs to chill just a little so he can focus on the singing. Least we all agree on Glen Hansard.
From Consequence Of Sound: In overalls and a straw hat, the 20-year-old Atlantan doesn’t have the greatest of singing voices, and his “songs for revolution and peace” can come off a bit canned (“God’s Whisper”). And despite being the first to get the Quad crowd up on their feet, he didn’t seem to hold everyone’s attention. Still, you just can’t shake the positive vibes and the fascinating things he’s attempting.

That consequence of sound review pretty much sums up my feelings on him. We listened to him from the beer line/garden and he didn’t really move us. By comparison Leon Bridges had us grooving from the same locations for his whole set the previous year.
Still, I like Raury on paper and album and am very interested in the genre fusion thing he is trying to do. Feels like he doesn’t have it 100% figured out yet but I’ll still keep an eye on him in the hopes he gets there.
The Revivalists - 7/31 Nantucket. They’re probably going to be added.
Was hoping for these guys last year. So I hope this works out. This would be a dynamite show!
I'm not crazy about them but their enjoyable enough. Definitely a good booking for Newport, although they'd probably end up serving to alleviate some potential conflict for me come schedule time. I'm picturing them as one of the last two acts on the Quad whichever day they play

I would think they’d need a Fort appearance. They’re pretty big.

Wish I Knew You is everywhere. I saw them at a fest a few years ago and they were pretty good. Agree with Strawman that I'm not crazy about them, but I'm sure it would be a good show. Are they putting out new music this year?
