I may be the most enthusiastic cannabis user on this forum, but Cheech and Chong does nothing for me.
Yeah, personally I'd rather have 'The War on Drugs'. But I think it'll be fun none the less and be a big draw. I'm more about the music though.
Cheech & Chong works for me because I look at it and think "That's a cool booking that I'd happily check out," but I'd have no issue missing their set for someone else.

This is a good point, but the talk of them being a headliner is a little... I dunno

I feel like they'd have a shorter set like Roger Waters did. Probably a few sketches and a few songs. If they headline that'd be interesting for sure but I'd rather something else.

When Flight of the concords were announced I didn't think they'd be the headliner that day but they were. Is that going to be the case here.

So like, if anyone can pick up an extra copy of the Speak Out record tomorrow, I'll gladly buy it off you! My local record store can't get it, and when I asked NFF if it would be sold at the fest they said no, only at US record stores tomorrow. The first time being Canadian has burned me... It would be a lovely favour for your humble BingoMaster.
I would assume they would close the Harbor or Quad, but if FotC closed the Fort Stage, then maybe they are Friday's headliner
If they're open to booking comedy acts, they should definitely book me.
I've got a great bit about an Americana version of The Bachelorette, where sad-eyed, depressed singer/songwriters compete for the hand of Mandy Moore. Newport Folk Festival is literally the only place in the world where that joke will get laughs.

True stoner humor isn't humor *about* marijuana, it's stuff that's particularly funny while under the influence of marijuana...like pretty much anything on Adult Swim.

Here is today's Rolling Stone article on Cheech and Chong thats so bloody long I didn't even read it. Instead of the The War On Drugs it looks like I get The Geriatrics On Drugs. It'd all good though. They are legends and should be fun.

It's like a bucket list type of show. Very cool but if it wasn't on the lineup I wouldn't be asking "but where is Cheech and Chong?".
I was more excited about Flight of the Conchords and don't want C&C to be main stage headliners but I am def looking forward to what they do.
I got to see Tommy Chong when he subbed in for a short while with the Marijuanalogues off Broadway ( pot-themed parody of the vagina monologues with Arj Barker and others). Was a good time.
As the elder statesman here, time for me to check in on this one. I well remember when Cheech and Chong were The Act to see. I, for one, have never been able to sit through one of their movies. Still, it's a sign Jay hasn't lost a beat. I do agree that their humor is more for stoners who are stoned than about being stoned, but how can you not take a look? Maybe listen to Kruangbin first with their reverb on 11 every song waiting for the San Francisco sound to have a resurgence. Anyway, brilliant addition, I think. But Jay is not done.
As I was reading the predictions of the usual suspects people expect to still be announced, I predicted yesterday "there will be a surprise aha moment thrown in there." I have another prediction: Cheech and Chong is not that surprise moment. They are an oldies novelty act, not a headliner; Flight of the Conchords was more recent, and more musical. Now, it's possible Cheech and Chong bring along some friends. I've been dying to see Bill Murray live (did see Belushi and Akyroyd at NYU in the late 70's, interrupting a self-indulgent Hunter Thompson diatribe as they chased each other around the auditorium with a buzz saw), but it would be so much cooler to turn to my left and have Bill Murray stealing my blanket telling me to go away.
By the way -- isn't it so Cheech and Chong that they have the wrong date on their website and write "Newport, R.I, not NFF.
So I'm from that generation that was enthralled to see Roger Waters (left field!) and Patti Smith (again), and wouldn't be surprised if there's another "Really? Didn't See that Coming" act -- The B52's anyone? Barenaked Ladies? The Dixie Chicks?
And finally, re headliners. Love a surprise. I think Jon Batiste and The Dapkings close and will bring surprises (ala Buddy Guy, Keith Richards, Stephen Colbert...but would be very happy with Brittany Howard sitting in for Sharon, or Kam Franklin, whom I love from afar, from the Suffers). I don't get the excitement about Lord Huron playing 3 out of 6 years. But think Deer Tick would make a great closer -- and a likely one -- on Saturday. So many people lurking on the east coast that weekend: Darius Rucker, Lady Antebellum, John Fogerty, Arlo (I think his stories are funnier that C&C).
FJM -- sorry, butI think he brings so much controversy among fans who like, love, could care less, or loathe, that I'd be surprised to see him headline. . But that's my point. I expect to be surprised.

Very well said. This is the most exiting time of year. But the coolest part is that we won't know the lineup until the festival ends. I have friends who left to beat the traffic before the John Prine set last year. Imagine how they felt afterward. Speaking of John Prine. I sat down tonight to listen to his new album for the first time. All I can say is WOW. Singers ain't supposed to get better with age. Damn John. You're going to win awards for this one. IT'S A CLASSIC.

misty's recent tour was spectacular and one of the best shows I've ever seen. he took it to another level. the production was absolutely top notch and i really hope that anyone who doesn't like him would give this most up to date iteration a chance

I agree with you on FJM. I saw him once early on in his solo career and he soured me on his show/music. While I am not actively hoping for him to be on the lineup (I just recently passed on a free chance to see him), I would check him out per the board’s recommendation. I could see the new album being more my thing.
I am actively hoping for Lord Huron because there is no other band so far on the lineup that does what they do (and the tour dates work out perfectly). I’d be open to another act in their place if its a similar sonic booking. However, I’m slowly becoming obsessed with their new album and they could play it in its entirety and I would be happy with that.
FWIW, FJM's new album isn't really jokey/ironic at all. Most of the album revolves around his marital issues and is packed with deeply touching and cutting lyrics
Just got the last copy of Speak Out at Tres Gatos in JP. It is a mad house and lots of folks were looking for it. Fun crowd though.
Pretty sure no copies of Speak Out were sent to my city. Was 9th in line at the first place, got to the second place about 10 minutes after they opened, and was 2nd in line at the third place. The first and third definitely didn't have a copy. So sad...those of you who did get a copy - ENJOY! I did pick up a Courtney Barnett record though, so it wasn't a total bust.
The store I was at in New Orleans had ~5 copies of Speak Out. Not sure if the Preservation Hall connection caused them to order a handful, or if this is common for bigger record stores in major music cities.
There were still about 3 copies left after I grabbed mine and wandered around the store drinking the Flaming Lips Dogfishhead beer. So, must not be in much demand down here.
I know... I know... I actually tried to buy a second copy for one of you but they limited everyone to one copy of a specific release per person.
Also nabbed the Dylan and the Dead album and the Soneros de Verdad album (although I think both are just first releases). I’m jonesing to get home to the turntable.
I had to work today. But a couple days ago I got lucky on EBay and some dude was selling one for 35.00. He was from California, so I suppose the demand is much lower there. I scooped that up.
For those who have never been to the Canadian Rockies, with a stop in Calgary, the breathtaking views and crystal clear drinking water alone make that festival worth attending. Get there early and try the famous Calgary stampede rodeo, then wind your way through the sheriff of Bannf-ffff (F Troop bit), Lake Louise, some fresh sockeye salmon in Kamloops, through Jasper. Well recall a tour guide in Bannf who was an incredible singer/guitar player. Wonder where he is now. Probably catching Alvvays there this July.
was extremely lucky to secure a copy of speak out from rough trade in Brooklyn yesterday.
Anyone else who got the album have any sound issues? My side a seems to warble like crazy and might be warped, while side b sounds fine. Guessing due to limited print imma shit outta luck on getting this fixed or addressed but wanted to see if i was only one...
