Yikes. Saturday. Is it bad I am actively hoping that Berklee is not on the lineup? At this point, if they’re on the lineup, we’re only missing headliners on Sat and Sun. That kills any hope I have of seeing Lord Huron or War on Drugs this summer. Or even any hope of some really unique unannounced set ala James Taylor.
Saturday still seems missing a headliner and subheadliner with only 1 spot open, unless we’re missing something (e.g., schedule has expanded, some museum acts have been announced already)
I can’t believe I’m saying this but this is the most blasé lineup rollout in recent memory. Don’t get me wrong, I still trust in Jay, but damn, we need some heavy hitters in the next few days to make up for this.

For what this costs me to go...this is a huge disappointment. Sorry, but true. There’s too much crossover and too many repeat acts. To me, it’s generally lame. If my wife didn’t love newport, we’d not be going.
It’s so weird because I’m used to seeing this board go crazy when at least 1 artist is announced. Have not seen that at all this season...
In my opinion, there have been 3 bigger surprise bookings: Cheech and Chong, Passenger, and Hamilton and Rostam. I may be the only one on here who cares about Passenger. The board was pretty excited after the Hamilton and Rostam booking. And Cheech and Chong is a novelty act that basically tours casinos at this point.

This will be our 5th consecutive year for my family. We love it, simply for the summertime getaway, unexpected artists and collaborations, 5 days in Newport and just the "folk family" atmosphere. However, we're from Philadelphia, so with all the crossover from the XPN festival and repeat artists from 2016-2017, it's a little disappointing. With that said, I'd much rather see this lineup in Newport rather than Camden, NJ!
Also, take a look at the Philly Folk Festival. That lineup usually has some popular names, but this years lineup (in my opinion) is a total dud. Patty Griffin, Wynona Judd and Valerie June .... as Headliners?! Graham Nash, Anderson East and The Lone Bellow were headliners just two years ago. In short, maybe it's just a down year for the smaller festivals that don't pay that well.
Total side note - I had meet and greet tickets to see an artist that should be on Newport's radar over the last few years and I asked if they were going to be there this year. His response was "Haven't been invited but I'd love to play there one day. Isn't that festival very cliche" .... it didn't hit me until today that it may be a little true!

Oh I was pretty pumped about Passenger. Look back lol, I was hit pretty hard for it haha

I've wanted to see Passenger for years. Wonderful add!
I mean it’s pretty realistic to assume that Dawes will be coming soon as well right. So there goes another spot. Unless they play backing band again.
The fact that there are 3 non-headlining sets left, one potentially going to Berklee and the remaining 2 on Friday, makes me think no. Especially when some on here are sure that Deer Tick is playing.

What if this is the year they give some respect to Deer Tick and let them headline Saturday? Can't say I'm that big of a fan after seeing them a few times but they play a hugely important role in this festival.
EDIT: partially bringing this up because it would 100% ruffle some feathers here, and is also realistic.

Then you'd all have the right to complain.
Yeah if they headline that’d be a joke IMO. Granted they’re big around here, but that’s about it. They’re not gonna headline though, so I won’t worry.

Wrong. I put my faith in Jay by buying a ticket. I'm here to hear new things and celebrate one of the best events in music. Doesn't matter if someone I am not crazy about is on the lineup, let alone headlining. This festival is for everyone, not just for me.
This is exactly what we signed up for. By putting that faith in someone else's hands.
This is not comparable to the Bonnaroo argument of the last few years, for those of you who will inevitably go there.
Has Deer Tick even subbed yet? Seems like a better spot for them.
I still think we get some big headliners. Arcade Fire appears most likely in my mind. I don’t know if a single headliner is enough to win me over though. Monsters of Folk would be on the right path (because of uniqueness). Bruce could do it. Maybe Bon Iver. Arcade Fire? As happy as I would be to see them at NFF, anyone who has wanted to see them over the last 2 years has had a chance to do so (and thanks to groupon, usually an affordable chance).

I'm saying there's absolutely no reason to complain right now. But if Deer Tick ended up headlining that would be something to complain about. This lineup is great and you're probably going to get Deer Tick and a great headliner.

If Deer Tick headlines I will be the happiest I've ever been. They are the best band in the world and nobody can convince me otherwise. I'd like them to headline Friday if I had my choice. Then give me anybody from the group of Neil Young, Monsters of Folk, Arcade Fire, Mumford & Sons, Willie Nelson, Father John Misty, Bon Iver, John Fogerty, Elton John, etc. to headline Saturday/Sunday I'll be happy.
If the remaining announcements include My Morning Jacket, Sylvan Esso, Lord Huron, Leon Bridges, OCMS, Dawes, etc. I'll be pretty disappointed, although I know I'll still have a great time.
Upcoming Shows: August 7: Green Day/Smashing Pumpkins/Rancid/The Linda Lindas August 30: Waxahatchee/Snail Mail/Tim Heidecker September 17: Pearl Jam/Glen Hansard September 24: Idles/English Teacher
For anyone who may be interested, I received word that there were two copies of Speak Out still on the shelf at Peaches Records in New Orleans yesterday. I unfortunately ran out of time to make it over there. However, I have seen them post their records on Amazon marketplace before, so if you are interested and willing to pay shipping, it may be worth calling them to see if they’ll sell it and ship it to you.
edit: I know we eventually hit a point where record stores get frantic that they’re stuck with RSD exclusives that nobody wants.
