for all the talk of old friends returning to the fort, im still surprised we haven't seen official announcements for dawes, deer tick, nate rateliff
just based on the combo of legacy AND album cycles i thought these were no brainers...
Add Low Anthem to that list of artists with new albums that are head scratchingly absent from the lineup.
I mean if we're gonna go this route you can add Father John Misty, Jim James, Traveller, Leon Bridges, Nicki Bluhm, Trampled By Turtles, Neko Case, and The Milk Carton Kids to that list
Toots is so much fun!! They will have the whole tent up and dancing. Toots & the Maytals have been playing the Oceanmist for decades - that's a legacy venue. Original RI dancehall. Special show.
IMHO don't think any announcements yet are museum acts.
Nathaniel won't likely show this year...he'll be in Japan.
Praying for Eddie.
Vedder or no Vedder, I think this is one of the best line ups ever.
She’s been the biggest grower for me since being announced. I worried about her being too sleepy for what I would want to see at a festival, but I’m getting so invested in her music that I’m okay with that. I totally hear the Conor Oberst and other darker indie folk influence in her work (and not just staying that because he’s featured in one of her songs).

I read an article where she was referred to as the female Bon Iver.

I definitely hear that. My mind initially went for a comparison to Sun Kil Moon, Pedro the Lion, and Bright Eyes.
Great find! The best possible comparison I could make was to the museum stage in 2014 when Communion organized and booked Leif Vollebeck, Hozier, Willy Mason, Bear’s Den, and Hamilton Leithauser to play the Museum Stage.
Was that right before Hozier blew up? I know he had a Harbour Stage set that year too. Was he originally planned for both or did they add him to a main stage for crowd control reasons?
This is the schedule I saw, as well: Post by op336 on Apr 25, 2018 at 2:11pm
"Saw a 2012 schedule and a reminder that they had unplugged sets in what I guess is still Square Space, and seven acts on Sunday (two short morning acts). They also used to announce their "wandering minstrels" and gate performers. And at times had some announced familiar acts in the Museum..."
I think several short sets with relative newcomers may be what we are looking at here. Trying to recall -- weren't there 7 acts when James Taylor played his short set?
Also -- I wouldn't be too quick to drop Batiste and the Dap Kings as the closer Sunday. They are a recording company's house band, Batiste leads a TV show band...and it would seem natural for them to be the "house band" for any number of musicians, announced and unannounced. At least that's how Jon Batiste has been teasing this set.
Ahhhh. Don't go getting my hopes up on Neil. I'm not expecting that after what Jay said. I could see Leon showing up which would be very cool. The first song is a great find and a very good version. I made a YouTube playlist with many songs by performers playing Newport this year and have the second video on it. Great jam.
Interesting. Phoebe Bridgers was a big Joni Mitchell fan. When she was growing up she started playing at a folk music center in California owned by Ben Harper. Heres a CBS This Morning segment about her. Her new album was on a lot of best of 2017 lists. John Mayer 'It's time you heard her. This is the arrival of a giant'. Ryan Admas 'Her new album is a modern masterpiece'. I read an article where she said she wrote one song from the album in Julien Baker mode, the whisper-to-a-scream mechanism. While on her first tour she was upset and considered cancelling because people talked during her sets. She called Ryan Adams who told her to sing in a whisper when it happened. She did and it worked. People realized they were being loud and ruining it for others. I'm expecting her set to be like Julien Bakers at Newport. I think the Newport audience will appreciate her.
I was lucky enough to see her at a really small venue a few weeks ago. She blew the crowd away. She made a comment about how respectful the audience was. I think we were just mesmerized! Can't wait to see her again.
I'm spending the weekend at The National's Homecoming/MusicNow Festival. Really well run festival with a lot to offer. There is a bit of crossover between here and Newport---I heard an incredible performance w/Bonnie Prince Billie and 8th blackbird w/Bryce Dessner. Next I'm hearing Lisa Hannigan and Crash Ensemble. Big Thief, Father John Misty, Julien Baker, Moses Sumney are also playing. I find, as with Newport, it's the smaller unexpected acts that become the highlights.
Ps. Moses Sumney just wowed everyone. Feist next.

When I saw you list him earlier I'd a feeling you'd end up saying this. His music has really been growing on me.
Also really liking Curtis Harding lately. Im feeling really grateful to Newport for sending such a great new generation of musicians our way this year. I'm expecting great things ahead for some of them. Last time we'd this many great up and coming artists was 2015.

Moses was incredible. I'm also excited about seeing Khruangbin at Newport.
Anyone have a good, up-to-date spotify playlist for this fest? Does NFF have an official one?
I could make one myself but usually I end up adding full albums so some of the acts get more play than others.
“Newport Folk Festival 2018” by Newport Folk Festival is the official one, they add as artists are announced, and sometimes it feels like the only thing I listen to. Last year I was listening to old ones back to 2015, but I only see back to 2017 now. The page has a few other playlists too “folk family” and “power to the people.”
