Every year, I struggle with artists on the list whose music I enjoy, but is, for lack of a better description, chill/low-key. It's the type of music I definitely enjoy listening to on a good pair of headphones, and seeing them in a tiny club or up close at the harbor tent would be a wonderful experience. However, I don't want to see it from 200 feet away at the Fort, or from beyond the tent at the Quad, if that makes sense. So I typically decide whether I'm going to stake out the stage early for the artist (thus sacrificing on some other act I want to see), or just skip in favor of something with more energy, because if I walk up as the set starts or mid-set, I'm not getting close enough.
As I'm reading people's comments on Phoebe Bridgers, this decision is in my head once again. A couple other examples from this year, Twain and Moses Sumney.
Anyone want to share thoughts on their strategies for this?

I'd say either get there early for a seat in the Quad or a close standing spot at the Fort. Otherwise, don't go.
The last few years the really quiet shows I've gone to at Newport have honestly made me want to wander away to dance somewhere else.

There are a lot of those this year. If at least on the Fort Stage, you can always get up close (I remember walking up front for Jack a white like 3 songs into his set); but they’re almost never on the Fort Stage.
I too am grappling with that this year. I do think Moses Sumney, judging from the Coachella live stream, has a strong enough show to pull you in from wherever. But Twain and Phoebe are definitely a concern. This could also be an issue for Bedouine, Rachael and Vilray, This is The Kit, and (hopefully not) Bermuda Triangle.
I too prefer these acts in a club rather than at a fest. But at least if they’re going to be at a fest, Newport is their best bet for a respectful audience.

Kamasi Washington was featured on Masseducation, has played Newport Jazz, and is available. If St. Vincent had any say in the bookings, it is possible they got him since we also got Jenny Lewis (Featured on Masseducation) and Tuck & Patti.
Upcoming Shows: August 7: Green Day/Smashing Pumpkins/Rancid/The Linda Lindas August 30: Waxahatchee/Snail Mail/Tim Heidecker September 17: Pearl Jam/Glen Hansard September 24: Idles/English Teacher

Man, with the talk on here a week or so ago about the new direction the Festival should take, introducing new genres and whatnot, and now the mention of Kamasi. Could you imagine if Kendrick headlined some year???

Agreed.
I think the smoothest transition would be to book Nas with the same band that backed him on American Epic. There are already 2 songs ready that would fit phenomenally.
I know we joke but man, it would be a bummer to see Berkelee in this spot...
Anti climatic (but may just be because I’m impatient)! Would have been a good day for a podcast, a post about a former artist/set, etc. or even a comment from the organizers (eg., “We’re in the home stretch of announcements. Thank you all for the support you have given. We can’t wait to show you what we have in store.”)

i guess even berklee announcement would have been better than no announcement...oh well

Could be going back to 3 a week for the final announcements?
I'm a little surprised they kept going with daily announcements for as long as they did. I don't remember having a full lineup (minus surprises) by now.

Would it still be a Springsteen set if he plays an unannnounced Museum stage set and there's no one there to hear it? Haha. I just remember so many good sets on that stage in 2016. Kristofferson, Joe Ely and Terry Allen, and Hayes Carll and Allison Moorer come to mind.
Friday headliner, right? She fits the mold of past Friday headliners and that's the only day she's free.
I think if unplugged, we see her close Quad Stage. If regular set, then probably Friday headliner. But it would seem strange to me to see Margo - Isbell - Sturgill - St Vincent. And I don’t foresee Sturgill and Isbell on Quad, but could be wrong.
At what point are the stylistic bounds of the Newport Folk Fest stretched beyond all recognition in their bookings? I can't see St. Vincent's regular plugged set fitting into Newport, particularly with her recent pop leanings.
Sure, they've booked plenty of acts who get loud and take their music in some very decidedly non-folk directions, but they always have some foundation in country, folk, blues, or R&B, like Wilco and My Morning Jacket.

I like st vincent more than sturgill but that doesn’t mean she’s more popular. I do love how she seems very approachable yet won’t ever tell you anything about her. I know this has nothing to do with the festival but I just got home and I’m rambling. Didn’t the jack white announcement come weeks after the previous announcement that year I’m wondering if that’s a possible scenario again this year for someone else.

The Jack White announcement was late. It came the Monday right after he played Gov Ball, which was assumed to be the reason for the delay.
Don't know if there'd be a similar case this year and I really hope not. Can they just announce Florence or MoF so I can just be hyped from now until late July?
When did Florence become a favorite? I mentioned them last year and I feel like people here shot it down when I mentioned it here.
Partially just because she's active again so it's more of a possibility. Also it'd be something different for the fest, while also fitting in well with this lineup.
Plus more women headliners everywhere is a good thing. Newport's more limited in that regard unfortunately and Florence is one of the few more modern big female artists that could fit
