When did Florence become a favorite? I mentioned them last year and I feel like people here shot it down when I mentioned it here.
I can't imagine FatM fitting either, unless they did an unplugged set.
I'd think that Neil Young or Paul Simon would be more likely additions. According to Songkick, their schedules line up for Newport. It would make a world of sense for Simon to do it, given that he's taking his farewell lap this year and his music would be perfect fit.

Partially just because she's active again so it's more of a possibility. Also it'd be something different for the fest, while also fitting in well with this lineup.
Plus more women headliners everywhere is a good thing. Newport's more limited in that regard unfortunately and Florence is one of the few more modern big female artists that could fit
This.
I’m fairly confident that Jay and team are actively booking a demographically diverse lineup. Would love to see it show in headliner choice as well. (St Vincent is definitely a good start.)
Also, I’m pretty sure I’ve mentioned her in most years at some stage of the lineup announcement process. But anyone who follows my posts when I get actively (and overly) invested in the festival knows I have recommended or mentioned every single artist that has played an acoustic guitar at some point in the process.
As for Florence, I see her no less likely than, say, Arcade Fire. She even gets the folk tag on Wikipedia. As a baroque pop/rock artist, I think a lot of the genre is rooted in folk instrumentation, melodies, and harmonies. (Hasn’t Brian Wilson played the fest before? Andrew Bird has, although I know he also was touring a more traditional folk album in the year he was booked. Similar artists on Spotify include Regina Spektor, Mumford and Sons, and Of Monsters and Men.)
Add in the fact that she is active and her current tour schedule doesn’t necessarily rule her out.

I’m not sure how I feel about this. I mean, obviously it’s a great booking. But we can’t get a name bigger than Barnett for the fest on Saturday, but we can pay extra for an FJM after show? And out of all of the repeats we get, potentially the one that makes the most sense because he’s at the peak of his career, is booked instead as a separate concert? I fully realize I’m impatient and time will give us a Saturday headliner, but in the meantime...

I was just going to post they announced a Pittburgh show for August 3rd so good bet he was playing something at Newport. Pittsburgh tends to have people who play Newport right before or right after. Still gives me hope for Lord Huron at the fest since I'll be inbound when they play in Pittsburgh.

We better know who the Saturday headliner is before tickets go on sale for this May 22nd. FJM is one of my favorite artists but if it's a headliner I love, I'm not leaving early.
Upcoming Shows: August 7: Green Day/Smashing Pumpkins/Rancid/The Linda Lindas August 30: Waxahatchee/Snail Mail/Tim Heidecker September 17: Pearl Jam/Glen Hansard September 24: Idles/English Teacher
Any reason in particular for this? This seems very strange to me
Agreed (although not necessarily with the word strange. More in my mind as ... curious or interesting). What if they had booked FJM as the headliner for Saturday? Obviously a more intimate show at Pickens has its advantages, but...

I'm guessing this was announced today because the rest of his tour was announced today. Personally, I think I'd be more excited if he was announced for the fest, but we'll just have to see who Newport has up their sleeves.

Newport's headliners the last few years have generally not interested me. I didn't care about seeing John Prine, so I skipped it. I see Wilco whenever they come by, so I skipped them. I don't care about Flight of the Conchords or Patti Smith. I watched Fleet Foxes last year and Alabama Shakes the year before.
I usually use the time to catch someone at the Quad and if they aren't really pulling me, leave early, grab some dinner and some good seats for the aftershows, which end up being my fav parts of the weekend, usually.
I imagine he will sit in on some sets during the day. Maybe Shakey Graves, HGM, or his touring buddy Jenny Lewis? OR BENEATH THE SACRED MOUNTAIN.
What if, and hear me out, he saw that Neil Young was playing saturday with Promise of the Real, and said "I gotta be there, Jay" but Jay said "hmm, we don't have room for ya bud" and Misty said "darn, how bout an aftershow" and Jay said "Okay!"

I also imagine some of those artists will show up at his after show.
Jenny Lewis definitely. Lucius if they hang around for the weekend. Phoebe Bridgers potentially? And I have a feeling Jonathan Wilson will be there too.
After shows should not be considered, in my mind, as part of the festival itself. There are precious few tickets, and people with families, dinner dates, jam sessions, long travel, short sleep, younger kids, older parents, tight budgets -- in other words, the huge bulk of festival goers -- have already paid for a stand-alone festival. So great after show announcement, but I would find no pleasure in Saturday now being fully booked, and a few able to say, yeah but FJM played an after show. We just may not know the headliners for quite some time.
A few pages back I said I thought the "museum hypothesis" was wrong but that I wouldn't be surprised to see additional aftershows. Not ready to toot my own horn yet but I feel I'm on the verge of being vindicated.
op336 I hear "after shows do not equal festival" but I think this is a great strategy. Adding additional "headliners" off site is a great way to give something to people who aren't wild about the fort closer. It's also no secret that Newport has financial limitations that other fests don't have to deal with, and adding no-doubt profitable aftershows feels like a way to help keep prices to the main fest down. Plus it'll get more people out of the parking lot so FJM haters (I see you Beaker) have an easier ride home. ;-)
There is no world where saturday announcements are over. This feels like he is now big enough to headline, but they have someone bigger/older and this is a way to keep him in the family.
I love FJM and I'll definitely shoot for tickets to this, but I've seen him twice and have another chance to see him closer to home this year so if the headliner is dope I reserve the right to skip it.
i'm generally impatient so maybe its coming but i am really hoping we get some kind of explanation via podcast or wherever as to the thoughts behind this.
i trust in jay but at first glance it kinda seems like a headliner-level guy that a lot of people anticipated is now playing for a fraction of the people at a premium cost on top of the festival ticket. while the actual saturday fest lineup seems a bit light. hm..
Another possibility is that FJM is playing an unannounced set. It'd seem kind of silly to announce the aftershow if that was the case, but who knows
Eh, Phil Cook played an aftershow with the Guitarheels the night before his set in 2016 so it's a possibility, popularity between the two notwithstanding.

I meant more that it'd be strange for him not to leave the set unannounced if he's announcing the aftershow
