An interesting announcement. I am happy about it overall in that I do not want to see Father John Misty and now I don't feel like I am getting stuck with him as a headliner.
What does this mean for the traditional Deer Tick after shows? Will there be multiple after shows?
Hoping that the Texas Gentlemen do another Texas Gentlemen and Friends after show as that was a pretty legendary. Speaking of, kind of surprised they didn't get announced as they had their first album and they have been so omnipresent at the festival the last couple of years. Have to assume they will be the backing band for some session.
On the Saturday lineup, I can't believe that they would go with 'Unannounced' headliner all the way to the show, so it is most likely someone who can't be announced until they have a competing performance. Who could that be besides Jack White?
Still am hoping it will be Arcade Fire. Would certainly not be upset with Paul Simon, Eddie Vedder or Bruce, but feel like they are too big and unlikely.

The last few years they've increased the after shows. Now it's Deer Tick (usually Thursday-Sunday) at the Blues Cafe and then two other small theaters having shows. This one is at the Jane Pickens theater which is a different place. Should be another one announced at some point.

Tick is usually Friday - Sunday and there is usually a different show at the NBC on Thursday. Last year it was “All Newport’s Eve”

Ahhh, gotcha. Didn't they do some show at the Blues Cafe on a Thursday in some year? Or maybe that was like a week/few days before the fest? Hard to keep track.

They've done Thursday kickoff at NBC at least the past two years with Langhorne. Last year was Langhorne & Charles Bradley

Three years ago when they were wearing the pirate costumes deer tick played the blues cafe Thursday-Sunday. I think last year they did the show on the beach in westerly on a Monday or Tuesday the week of Newport.
Jane Pickens capacity is 475, if they open the balcony, and 300 if not (the only JPT after show I went to, the balcony was inaccessible I believe; but the show was also not sold out).
Assuming some tickets get held for the promoter, festival, etc. that doesn’t leave too many tickets for sale to see him.

I wonder if Langhorne will still do it even though he is announced properly this year? We went to the thursday show two years in a row, 2015 at Pickens when it was the Watkins family and 2016 NBC for The Suffers and Langhorne.
I've been holding onto this salt for a few years now but I'm always surprised when people get pumped for Langhorne because he really brought us down at that aftershow. He told a rambling story about an ex girlfriend for about 15 minutes and ended by saying "this has no point I'm just killing time." We skipped it last year when we saw it was him again. My wife has been listening to him lately tho, so I guess this is the time to give him another shot.
Either way I think I'll try to swing the Thursday show--it's a great way to ease into the festival. Set up camp, grab some dinner, listen to some music. Oh man I'm getting excited now.

He's at Floyd Fest this year, so no chance of All Newport's Eve
The irrational hatred of FJM by people is hilarious to me
People like their folk really boring and made by boring people. That's the only plausible explanation.
Edited to say no problem with people not liking his music. Just seems like people's opinions of him are based on personal feelings rather than the music, which is indubitably better and more adventurous than 90% of the stuff on this "real" lineup.

He once dissed my dog on Twitter but I still love him.
I also once got in a Twitter argument with Robin Pecknold over the Patriots/Seahawks Super Bowl because he thought I was supporting a pro-Trump, conservative football team.
Clearly I just can't get along with Pacific Northwesterners...
Upcoming Shows: August 7: Green Day/Smashing Pumpkins/Rancid/The Linda Lindas August 30: Waxahatchee/Snail Mail/Tim Heidecker September 17: Pearl Jam/Glen Hansard September 24: Idles/English Teacher
The irrational hatred of FJM by people is hilarious to me
Why irrational? I am sure if you asked people to provide a rational reason for their dislike, many could do so, even if you disagree.
I never hated FJM, but I will admit I had a very hard time getting into his stuff. While I always appreciated his lyricism, I thought the music was boring. Nothing I would ever play on Spotify or want to see live.
His live persona did not do much in my mind to win me over. It didn't necessarily turn me off to his music, but I can see why it might to others.
However, upon further exploration, especially of his newer stuff, I am rapidly coming around to his music. I am eagerly awaiting his new album. I am bummed that I passed on his show last month when I had a free ticket (it was for a good reason though as I had visitors from out of town). This is probably why I am most disappointed in the announcement; I really want to catch him live but I am not sure if I am ready to spend $50+ (and prevent a potentially bigger fan from getting a ticket) to see him.
I have heard similar arguments lobbied at those who hate Kanye ("how can you hate such a genius?"). He's talented, but his personality is polarizing. Many of those individuals may now feel vindicated at their disdain.
