Aretha Franklin has a June 2nd show in Boston so that could be another hold out. And one that I would gladly welcome.
I had tickets to this show and just received an email over the weekend that the show was canceled because of medical issues (Doctor told her not to tour). Same thing happened to me last summer for a show she was supposed to do at Martha's Vineyard. Hopefully she's ok, but I would probably guess she's not playing Newport.
No announcements Friday or Monday after daily announcements. Could it be some of the Museum acts have already been named and the lineup is not full yet?
I am OK in a general sense with all days, even Saturday -- its a nice little show -- but not exactly the festival that earns national recognition, and causes me to spend what I do on hotels and tickets. With all the competition out there now, they could be going more bare bones, but then arguably missing some pretty interesting, well touted new and indie acts. I think we'll have a better idea at the end of July. Would like some teaser boxes, though.
And good with Jack White. But been there, done that.
Hope you're right. And if they don't, I'm happy with Jack White. I was apprehensive when he played in 2014 (I'm not even sure why, I was a white stripes fan in their day) but he won me over completely and my wife and I have revisited both his solo stuff and the White Stripes regularly since.
That said I hope they don't tease an unannounced headliner only to have it be..Jack White who has played before and folk in the thread have already guessed.

My understanding was that doctor said she should not play shows for 2 months. Newport would be on the outside of the two months. Doesn’t Wein also book Nola Jazz Fest? She was booked for that and had to drop off at the doctor’s request. If she was booked, Newport may be in scramble mode.
"Sundown" is a little after 8 PM in late July, and the festival typically lets out at 7:30... maybe we get an extra 30 minutes? That could easily up the daily acts to 20 if every day starts closer to 11.
As much as I want to believe we’re still 2–5 acts short on the lineup, it’s most likely we are just a headliner shy of being complete (Saturday; the only day with fewer than 18 announced acts). The “More Acts To Be Announced” is either accidental until we get that last headliner or refers to impending Museum Stage announcements (I know there was talk that they were quick to remove it last year before Museum Stage acts; but consistency in how they announce the lineup is not a strength of NFF).
I was an original supporter of the idea that we do indeed have more acts to be announced. But that was before Newport just stopped announcing acts entirely (after hitting 18 on 2 of the 3 days). With the FJM after show announcement, there are no obvious omissions from the lineup either (a few maybes because of gaps in touring, but no obvious tour schedules with missing dates around Newport and missing Boston dates).
The only concerning factor to me is that there are currently 4 acts scheduled for Friday that are almost undeniably bigger than the biggest act currently announced for Saturday. It is really hard for me to believe a single headliner will be enough to address this discrepancy between days. And that Sunday does look to be missing an actual headliner (especially when Batiste and the Dap Kings are touring this year and not entirely unique to Newport and Toots is playing a bunch of free shows on their summer tour).
Hasn't it been 19 acts a day for the past 5 years (save the James Taylor day when it was 20)? Unless some people would only play if they could get longer sets, which would be odd to me, then surely we're short a few acts.

In recent years it has been 3 stages with 6 acts per stage: 18 total acts. You are right that in years with unannounced sets, sometimes we'll get a 7th artist on a stage, making 19 for the day (but not always the case; it was true for James Taylor's unannounced set but not true for MMJ's unannounced set).
Thus, it just seems too coincidental to me that announcements stopped as soon as we hit 18 announced acts for 2 of the 3 days if Newport was planning to expand to more acts per day (by somehow squeezing in an extra hour or putting smaller announced acts on the museum stage).

Yep, just looked back and realized I remembered it wrong.
Side note: Kurt Vile just announced a show with Lukas Nelson and POTR in Quebec City on July 6 with.... Neil Young.

Yeah, that monster fest was announced back in March. I believe it’s a 2 week fest.
News sites in UK are reporting that the lead singer of Frightened Rabbit is missing having earlier tweeted what is believed to be a suicide note. Hope this ends well.
saw traveller last night in brooklyn. super fun show, guys absolutely killed it, great time had by all. i failed to drum up any newport conversation with the guys, but it seems like a real no brainer.....AND NEVERMIND: looks like they are in germany on 7/28. if not for that, i would have certainly penciled them in for a DT after show opener or more. too bad, go see them if you can.
looks like two new dawes tracks out today. crack the code was played by taylor solo last tour. both good, if a bit slow going so far...
id certainly like some more nff info, how am i gonna make it to july?
Haven't been able to listen yet but what are your main complaints? I've tended to like most of their releases. I also find that I'm a little lukewarm to new stuff until I see then do it live

I'll have to give it more listens before cementing how I feel, but it's fairly in line with the direction they went on the last record. I think Taylor's lyrics aren't as sharp as they used to be and, along with his voice, feel out of place with this music. The band also just doesn't sound natural playing this. I'm all about them trying to evolve from just being a rootsy California rock band, and I don't think they sold out or anything, but I think they're reaching for something that they don't quite pull off.
I do agree on the 'seeing them live' thing. Their show at the Beacon last year might be the best Dawes show I've seen. But I don't know if I'd ever choose to go back to We're All Gonna Die over the other records, and I have a feeling this new one will be similar. Or worse. Taylor Goldsmith writing a concept album about the modern age is definitely not a prospect that fills me with excitement.
I don’t hate new Dawes. I assume it’d be fun live. Obviously, it doesn’t live up the expectations I created for them after their first two albums. But to be fair, those albums were simply Dawes being The Band 2.0. You can only do that for so long; but I wish they grew into something better than subpar My Morning Jacket.
Their other song out today Crack the Code is better and more traditional Dawes sounding.
