combined with the noise around Kanye making a surprise appearance, is it worth entertaining the idea of Tame Impala getting a Jack White 2015 / Black Keys 2012 headlining second to last slot and then Kid Cudi closing Main against Aphex Twin?

One of the dumbest things I've read on inforoo.
Yeah the kanye set is going to be in the Antarctic dome with a choir, idiots
How many people show up to Aphex Twin if he conflicts directly with Tame Impala? Less than 2,500? It's crazy to me that this seems likely.
That low? Aphex seems to be very anticipated, I don't think there would be that few people.
Regardless of conflicts, I'm betting the Aphex set will be poorly attended. And then when the curious realize how esoteric and non-lit his sound is, it's going to be really poorly attended. Something along the lines of A Perfect Circle or JMJ crowd to start and then thinning out further from there.
For that reason alone I'm hoping GV finds a way to put him in the Mojave (or even Gobi but that seems unlikely) and spare him the reality of an 85% empty Outdoor or Sahara.

I have fond memories of Animal Collective taking the main stage before Arcade Fire in 2011. Massive crowd, with many expressing excitement to see Animal Collective. They were still indie royalty, and Coachella was still (somewhat) an indie festival. Animal Collective goes on and.....madness ensues. Could’ve been 50% of the crowd that left in disgust. To be fair, AC played an incredibly abrasive set with not a whiff of a melody or “hit” song. Which is to say, I anticipate that Aphex will be in a similar vein.
Anyone that chooses tame over Aphex would be dumb anyway. Tame is like the easiest band ever to see. I think Aphex will have an acceptable crowd wherever he is. Certainly bigger than JMJ
Aphex will be noticeably bigger than both JMJ and APC but nowhere near a sizable crowd. It'll still feel paltry. I thought for sure nobody was going to show up to Jamiroquai or Underworld and they both filled up their tents. Aphex Twin is a different beast and far less accessible, but I don't think it will be JMJ level tragic.

Even if you hate aphex twin and tame impala is your favorite band of all time, if they conflict, please go see aphex twin. Even if you don't enjoy the experience it will be good for you. Sometimes music isn't fun. Sometimes it is exhausting and scary and anxiety inducing.

I still feel like Aphex was booked for 90 mins in the Sahara/Mojave against JT since they both were booked 11 months ago and I don’t see that changing just cause an unrelated psych rock band replaced JT

Counterpoint; Go where you gonna create the best memory. No guarantee Tame ever headlines Coachella again.
Underworld a pretty good sized crowd in the Sahara although unlike Aphex that crowd grew, and his will likely shrink.
If they booked him at all and put him on the second line I find it hard to believe he would be anywhere other than Sahara or Outdoor, and that they would then put him against Tame Impala seems like a bad move. But who knows. The Paul moves in mysterious ways.

It will grow if they book him second to last in the Sahara with Bassnectar closing. The kids will catch the last 25 minutes of Aphex after Kid Cudi or Billie Ellish finishes on the Outdoor.
Regardless of how rare Aphex is, I’m not missing Tame for him. I’d much rather be at a set I know I’m going to enjoy than at a set that I’m not hip enough for.
What about Aphex at main during sundown like Disclosure in 16? They are billed similarly and Aphex with those screens would be nuts and would add enough diversity to the main stage to discourage camping

Aphex did play Sahara in 2008. Sure sure, different DEMOGRAPHICS then but still, there's precedent to have him there. I agree with Travelfan that it'll be an ok-attended but not massive crowd, and people will be happy at him.
Saying you should see him even if you hate him, and even if you don't enjoy it - one of the most asinine things I've ever heard.
And Aphex playing the sunset slot would be even weirder than my pet weird booking, which is to stick him after Tame on the main (obv not happening).

Some people love Tame, so it’s not wrong or bad to see them. Especially because Aphex isn’t for everyone. I’ll be at Aphex if they conflict, but won’t call anyone who sees Tame dumb. That’s dumb itself.

Let's pretend we're in an alternate universe where that happens, what are you putting on the other stages when Aphex is on the main?

No. This is stupid reasoning.
This type of "logic" is exactly what causes people to make bad decisions at Coachella. Also quack you for saying it'll be "good" for people.
I see abrasive and anxiety-inducing music all the time, and subject myself to musical misery more than enough. My favorite band is headlining, I've been anticipating their rise to the headline slot for years, I won't miss the set for anything.
There are 99/100 circumstances where people should see the rarer, more "challenging" artist as it will be more rewarding. This is the 1/100 where people should truly just do what they want instead, which ever set that leads them too.
