I see both sides of the argument. I personally would see Aphex and Tame is one of my favorite bands of all time. I saw M83 instead of Underworld because I liked M83 more and regret that seeing as I saw them three times that year
This type of "logic" is exactly what causes people to make bad decisions at Coachella. Also quack you for saying it'll be "good" for people.
I see abrasive and anxiety-inducing music all the time, and subject myself to musical misery more than enough. My favorite band is headlining, I've been anticipating their rise to the headline slot for years, I won't miss the set for anything.
There are 99/100 circumstances where people should see the rarer, more "challenging" artist as it will be more rewarding. This is the 1/100 where people should truly just do what they want instead, which ever set that leads them too.
Personally I hate the "rarity" argument. The only reason you should see a rare act you don't particularly care for over an act you love is if you place a tremendous amount of value on being the type of person who has seen a large number of rare musical acts. And if that's the case I hate to break it to you but 99.5% of the population literally doesn't care and the 0.5% of the population that does care almost assuredly *also* has their perception of self built on being the guy who has seen all the rare sets and thus will still be perpetually unimpressed by your accomplishments. "Oh you saw Aphex at Coachella...that mainstream fest where he had a short set time...I mean surethat's cool and all but I saw him in 95 at a warehouse outside of Berlin and he played for four hours..."
It's your weekend. Go to the one you'll enjoy more. The checklist mentality is just smoke and mirrors.

I think your projecting a little bit with your logic on the rarity argument. The idea is “if you’re even remotely interested you should go and see if you like it because you will never have another chance” not “you should go even if you don’t like it because you’ll get to tell people you were there.”
I’ve never seen Aphex Twin or Tame Impala. If they conflict (which I don’t think they will), I’m gonna prioritize seeing Aphex, and if I’m not feeling it, I’m going to leave and life will go on.
tbh while the rarity absolutely does play a role, I also want to see Aphex Twin because the shows look good and fun!
I would also argue I guess that nothing about this screams “anxiety inducing” or even particularly challenging to enjoy. Anyway I don’t think I can tread into this discussion without a true hot take so I will also say that while I like both, Aphex Twin just simply makes better music than Tame Impala.

I'm talking explicitly about the argument that's been made in this thread that you should go see it even if you're not into it.

Then you’re not talking about the rarity argument. The person who said you should go see it even if you hate it never mentioned rarity.

Dude. Take a deep breath.
lol I am breathing deeply. Unsure how this post is more intense than any of the other hot takes swimming around these forums lately.
And yeah feeling confused about OSL. The lineup isn't horrible but I don't really "get" some of the bookings. May try and do a single day ticket.

Final thought on the Aphex thing, I agree that I don't think they will conflict in entirety. I appreciate everyone on this thread sharing his live sets, as I'm unfamiliar with his performances (much more familiar with his studio work), and probably need to educate myself further before deciding how badly I feel like running between stages to catch whichever part of Aphex doesn't overlap.
Aphex did play Sahara in 2008. Sure sure, different DEMOGRAPHICS then but still, there's precedent to have him there. I agree with Travelfan that it'll be an ok-attended but not massive crowd, and people will be happy at him.
Saying you should see him even if you hate him, and even if you don't enjoy it - one of the most asinine things I've ever heard.
And Aphex playing the sunset slot would be even weirder than my pet weird booking, which is to stick him after Tame on the main (obv not happening).
Let's pretend we're in an alternate universe where that happens, what are you putting on the other stages when Aphex is on the main?
You could have Cudi on the Outdoor at the same time, Bassnectar or Balvin in the Sahara, and the rest be whatever. (but it's not gonna happen)
If aphex is in between Solange and tame on the outdoor I’ll be there. Any other time I’ll just have to miss.
I also am surprised we didn’t get any new albums from Cudi/Gambino. Tame SHOULD be releasing this week with SNL but who knows.
Cudi has put out a few albums since the last time he played. Did he hint at more coming?
No he’s just been in the studio for a while. But he already did a full PP&DS tour well over a year ago. I guess he could do KSG stuff but weird if it’s just half songs. Him doing PP&DS is like Coachella booking sza this year to do CTRL (assuming she wasn’t there last year)
I just remembered us having a discussion about the rarity (or almost non existence ) of 2nd line acts with albums over 12 months old in reference to would James Blake be at Coachella 2020

I remember said discussion, but I think most of us are assuming he was booked to do KSG songs. Even without Kanye on the lineup, he guests almost every year anyway. I expect a couple hits into a KSG set.

I definitely expected Gambino's album to be out by now. Considering he's the "everywhere" headliner....it feels like some festivals will get a different setlist than others if those shows are post-release.
It will be weird if only one of our headliners has their "album that propelled them to headline" actually released.

Has he? I can’t remember one time kanye was a special guest at Coachella besides Stromae

Came out with The Weeknd in 2015 and A$AP Rocky in 2016. Not sure what else.
Saw Ariana on her new tour last night, and as someone who has seen her two previous tours as well, her live performance was much better on this tour than the last ones.
Does anyone have a checklist for camping I can use? Camping with 4 of my guy friends so as expected we aren't very organized and I'm tryna remedy that!

Someone made a huge one for Bonnaroo a while back, let me see if I can find it
