After some math, can confirm that performances by Chem Bros, Stereolab, Modeselektor, and The Rapture would have madeup that extra 10K and ya wouldn’t even need the worst possible version of Kanye.
Agreed. Or Thom Yorke or Massive Attack. I’ve seen Aphex 3 times (Day For Night, Primavera, Club to Club) and will be seeing him again this weekend at Ceremonia. If Coachella had one or two more rare left field bookings, I would have chosen that over Ceremonia.
Four Tet, Yves Tumor, and Jon Hopkins isn’t enough added value to Aphex. Especially with a weak Yuma lineup.
Also I believe if it was the first Aphex Twin show in years, then that’s an extra 20-30K tix. He blew his load playing other festivals.
JT’s tour still did great numbers. All the metrics about Ari can be completely true (although Billboard rankings is a broken measurement) and that still doesn’t change the fact that Americans loves to prop up white guys who haven’t done anything worthwhile in years.
I don’t have the numbers, but I think Ariana’s stadium tour is doing better than JT’s last stadium tour.
As of last month JT has made 212 million, Ariana started last month. You would have to revisit that in 2020

You guys got to come to reality lol. Aphex ain’t adding 30K of nothing lmao
I guess my broader point is that JT is certainly bigger than Tame Impala but Ariana trumps both by a long shot.
Eh I disagree there too. I’d certainly rather see Ari, and long term she’ll end up being a clear “number one at Coachella” caliber headliner, but she’s not there yet. I think if you surveyed the type of casual fans who go to Coachella based on the name and the top two lines that are the bread and butter if ticket sales, they’re picking JT over Ari, and even if you surveyed this board I think they’d be at best 50/50. JT is old and washed, but old washed white guys have commercial staying power.
The only reason this isn't a ridiculous statement is because she already has three sold out arena shows in LA. She's the biggest draw in spite of that. She's much, much bigger than JT is right now.

LOL yes, Truevine was responding to a sarcastic comment seriously. But this still speaks to the same thing. If there were more than JUST aphex, people would come for it. If Coachella did more than a token act to fulfill certain genres, people would come for them. They used to do this with pop, R&B, and rap, and now they do it with rock and electronic. With this many acts across three days, they could be genuinely satisfying five genres every year, and they don't, and I find that perplexing.

He's not wrong. As a consistent festival goer, I would have done Coachella this year if they had more of a 2013 undercard. There's just not enough around Aphex and the like to make that investment. Instead, I'm pulling a truevine and opting for Ceremonia in a few days. The fact that there's much more niche festivals now hurts Coachella in the long run as those obscure acts have a wide variety of options to choose from instead of taking a single (big) pay day from Coachella.

Which is crazy because Coachella can be five niche festivals at once - many of those “niches” being hugely popular genres. They could easily dominate any competing niche fest while still satisfying people who don’t spend a lot of time at concerts or discovering new music.

Rough numbers for perspective...
2,000 people primarily going for Aphex Twin paying $375 each = $750,000/performance once quoted as his festival fee.
So does that mean we could get Aphex at a discount and get 15x as many people as his few demands if only he didn’t play some small Houston festival a few years ago first
I thought we were discussing things they could have done to sell more tickets.
Is it really that hard to imagine a hybrid of 2013’s lineup and this year’s lineup that still appeals to both crowds and ends up selling more tickets?
I think the main problem with this year’s lineup is that there aren’t enough big name, mass appeal acts, so no, I don’t think adding more 2013 acts change things meaningfully.

It's easy to imagine a hybrid lineup that appeals more to you, but I don't think dropping acts like DJ Snake, Diplo, or even Blackpink for more old school bookings like Nick Cave, Sigur Ros, or Grizzly Bear moves the mythical extra 10k.

I mean to be fair this is one of the people on this board that books festivals, and also had a financially successful festival this year. Maybe hes right

Flip Gambino for Drake and this thing is sold out easy. Even with Tame Impala there

Touching back on the Ari vs. JT argument, I know that GV have been trying to get JT for years but now it’s kinda too late IMO. By too late I mean the appeal is getting stale. We’ve seen a big shift in pop music the past few years regarding it’s sound, audience and definition. The charts look different than what they did years ago and the older established pop stars are getting left behind. They just don’t have the tools to keep up anymore in this age of streaming. We’re already seeing the relevance of artists like Taylor Swift start to fade. Sure they’ll still sell tours really well but that’s like saying people like Bruce Springsteen sell well too despite him having no place at Coachella.
I think JT is one of these pop stars that just don’t seem to fit anymore. His last album was a failure to make a mark in today’s scene and he’s not enough of an icon like Beyoncé was to warrant a top spot like that anymore. Ariana, on the other hand, is a near perfect representative of today’s pop. Tollett himself said this lineup is “very 2019” and a large part of that is due to Ariana. JT wouldn’t have that kind of appeal. Of course he’d sell better than Tame but let’s not act like JT is some big buzz worthy name anymore.

JT did 2.5M a show last year in revenue.
P!nk grossed more than JT did and she sure as shit isn’t playing Coachella.

I think you could replace some combination of BLACKPINK, Ella Mai, Solange, Weezer, Wiz Khalifa, CHVRCHES, H.E.R., and Kaytranada from the 2nd and 3rd lines this year with almost anyone and not see a notable change in ticket sales. And I think if you tossed in some combination of Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Hot Chip, Spoon, James Blake, The Hives, Cut Copy, DFA 1979, Lauryn Hill, and Flying Lotus you'd pick up people who otherwise aren't going to this thing. Maybe I'm crazy. This is obviously the hill I shall die on.

I think JT and Ariana have a similar dynamic to AC/DC and Drake and 2015. AC/DC was coasting on legacy status and did not pull in the the same crowd as Drake, but I think they were the clear “#1” headliner. I think where Ari is now is where Drake was then, popular and about to go supernova, but still not the type of icon people expect from Coachella’s biggest act.
JT is an extremely weak example of a #1 headliner, but I think sales would be better with him on the card, especially if we were being more honest and comparing JT/Kanye/Gambino vs Kanye/Gambino/Tame.
Also, JT/Kanye/Ari would have been an easy sell out too. Gambino is getting off easy in the “why didn’t they sell more tickets” debate.

What you guys are failing to realize is a lot of the people going are already on the fence so you want to then take away Solange and HER? Or eliminate something as buzzworthy as BLACKPINK for Hot Chip and Cut Copy? You will lose much more than you gain. Especially people who will say “I can see hot chip and cut copy for cheap. And not when Ariana is playing”
The only way indie rock or electric rock or whatever genre you feel is being left out can move 10K solo is with a headliner. Period. And then you have to account how much you lose losing that headliner
