What you guys are failing to realize is a lot of the people going are already on the fence so you want to then take away Solange and HER? Or eliminate something as buzzworthy as BLACKPINK for Hot Chip and Cut Copy? You will lose much more than you gain. Especially people who will say “I can see hot chip and cut copy for cheap. And not when Ariana is playing”
The only way indie rock or electric rock or whatever genre you feel is being left out can move 10K solo is with a headliner. Period. And then you have to account how much you lose losing that headliner
Childish/Tame/Artic Artic/Tame/Ariana
Both lose more than gain
I just don't think Solange or HER is pushing anyone over the edge on a lineup with Gambino, Janelle, Cudi, Ariana, Khalid, etc, to be totally honest. But yeah, I might be wrong about that. In terms of Spotify listens, Solange is a weak #2. Maybe she'll have a massive crowd of people who don't actually listen to her music. I'm dubious.
(edit) H.E.R. is a lot bigger than I realized, though, I'll take the L on that.
It's easy to imagine a hybrid lineup that appeals more to you, but I don't think dropping acts like DJ Snake, Diplo, or even Blackpink for more old school bookings like Nick Cave, Sigur Ros, or Grizzly Bear moves the mythical extra 10k.
I think you could replace some combination of BLACKPINK, Ella Mai, Solange, Weezer, Wiz Khalifa, CHVRCHES, H.E.R., and Kaytranada from the 2nd and 3rd lines this year with almost anyone and not see a notable change in ticket sales. And I think if you tossed in some combination of Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Hot Chip, Spoon, James Blake, The Hives, Cut Copy, DFA 1979, Lauryn Hill, and Flying Lotus you'd pick up people who otherwise aren't going to this thing. Maybe I'm crazy. This is obviously the hill I shall die on.
No way should BLACKPINK, Ella Mai, Solange or H.E.R. should be replaced with any of the artists you listed (except for James Blake). The lost hype wouldn’t be worth it. Hell, one of them was nominated for album of the year and they’re a candidate to be replaced?

Switch out Weezer for Massive Attack / Thom Yorke / Trent Reznor. CHVRCHES for James Blake. DJ Snake/Dillon Francis for ZHU. Wiz for Black Star or old school hip hop. And a much better Yuma lineup (like MCDE, Talaboman, Pachanga Boys last year) And that’s easy 10K more tix.
The mainstream crowd is already going. They need to convince the more educated crowd to move the needle. Especially when you have a unicorn like Aphex on the lineup already. Need added value.

from your experience are the costs of these acts roughly similar or would this have been an additional cost incurred

Well from experience. I am a person who just bought the W1 ticket cause I wasn’t pressed to go. You remove Solange and I don’t buy my ticket.
I would have about 6 - 8 more friends if they put a massive attack act or if they could of got misfits. We have all been going since 2010 and this was finally a year where the majority of our friends did not find the music worth it.

Roughly similar. Massive Attack and Thom more than Weezer though. But you’d save money on ZHU over a DJ Snake.
Every time I go to Reddit Coachella it’s just a big Tame Impala circle jerk. They’re going to have the smallest crowd of any headliners since 2013. I don’t think you should put too much faith in what’s going on over there as a bellwether.
1. r/Coachella is absolutely a Tame circle jerk. I undeniably participate in that. This fact pollutes my next point
2. Honestly someone posted their 2015 subheadlining video on the sub and their crowd size shocked me. Much bigger than I remember. I think you are under-estimating their draw vastly. Will it be the smallest headlining crowd? absolutely. Smallest headlining crowd since 2013? no way in hell. LCD and even Jack White will have you beat IMO. I feel like their crowd will be similarly sized to Radiohead.

I second this idea being tossed around. Even just remove the damn second line repeats, DJ Snake, Zedd, CHVRCHES, Dillon Francis. Add some slightly more unique acts (anything mentioned in this thread so far) and my intuition is that sales would increase.
EDM artists who everyone in the festival scene has had the opportunity to see 100 times, don't in my opinion sell tickets. Toss in Thom and James Blake and I think you have a winner.

Distorted crowd size photos are a proud Inforoo tradition. They are never useful. I bet there's a photo out there that makes the Stone Roses crowd look like Altamont.

I think we (myself included ) are betting too personal. Cause In the same vein if you replace any of the 3 headliners with Kanye or Travis I have 10 friends going.
We call all agree this is a down year but I don’t think going backwards is the key.

Video. It was a video. Much easier to tell the crowd size that way.

This video shows the crowd a couple times near the beginning and it looks pretty big. And that was before Currents came out, right?
The crowd size was pretty normal for a sub in '15.
2015 had some damn strong subs. If you are saying that Tame's 2015 crowd size was similar to the crowds for The Weeknd and Florence....then I think they will draw just fine in 2019.

I think you guys are really underestimating Tame, they are a huge act among the younger crowd, and even older. I just saw them over the summer at Mad Cool and it was insane how crowded it got. Their visuals are insanely good and new music is always a draw. I’m pumped to see them and think they will bring the heat.

Yeah I think they will draw fine - granted there were some AC/DC campers that night. I just don't remember the crowd being significantly small/great.
I think they will have just a big of a crowd as Gambino (whose drawing power I feel is a bit overrated, though I'm basing this off of nothing).

For me I'm not going this year (95% sure...) because of the lack of second line rock acts. Sure, I think it's a fairly weak headliner crop and switching out Gambino for a bigger rapper/pop star or Ariana for a legacy rock band would have been big for me, but I just get very little value for my ticket in the second line rock.
It went from *just last year* having Fleet Foxes, St. Vincent, War on Drugs, David Byrne, A Perfect Circle - all bands I'd pay $50 to see (and even HAIM, PtM, and alt-J), to this year essentially just being The 1975 and Weezer from the "rock" side of things, and both of them are pop / mainstream rock.
I know that makes the lineup "very 2019" to have little/no rock acts, and they always get small crowds, and blah blah blah I'm just saying if Misfits were subbing instead of Khalid and The National were playing instead of Diplo, I'd be there.

My bad.
I don't think anyone really expects a Stone Roses crowd, and I think they could outdraw LCD, but it's going to be significantly smaller than the last 6 headlining sets.
(B) That doesn't necessarily mean that that is a perfect representation of the average Coachella ticket buyers. I knew people that went and most fell into the 30-50 year old professional type person that sees one concert a year and just picks the biggest one, not necessarily representative of Coachella's target audience of 25-35 year olds. This isn't Beyonce who was at her cultural peak when she performed.
It really blows my mind how much you all are underestimating Ariana's draw right now. She is, hands down, the biggest act on the planet. If I had the choice to pick JT over a year out from an album nobody liked and a show all his fans got the chance to see, or Ariana who is currently touring in support of the biggest album so far this year, with two #1 and one #2 singles, and 11 of the album songs hitting the Top 40, and the #1 most listened to artist on Spotify in the world, and the record for the biggest streaming week in music for a pop artist ever, AND one who simultaneously is balancing all of this with critical acclaim from established indie music publications and blogs...I mean, I wouldn't even think twice about it.
Would Justin have been a bigger draw than Gambino or Tame? Unquestionably. Bigger than Ari? in 2019? No way.
And the idea of replacing BLACKPINK or H.E.R. is ridiculous, frankly. H.E.R. just swept clean at the Grammy's. BLACKPINK is selling out huge venues right now. Those are two of the smartest bookings for this year. Wiz, yeah I get that easily. Dillon Francis and Zedd are totally unnecessary. CHVRCHES seems lazy.
