The only reason I don't totally hate the Weezer booking is because they appear to play almost entirely classic tunes and covers (way too many covers, in fact), so it might not be an awful set. But it's an incredibly lazy, bad booking, there are lots of acts that would be more exciting there.

I also don’t totally hate it, but only because they’ll be the easiest band in the world to skip during a prime time.
I feel like one weekend Weezer is going to play a killer debut/Pinkerton heavy set and really crush it and one weekend they're just going to not give a shit, play a bunch of their lame new songs and covers and leave. Seems like the Weezer thing to do.
Vampire Weekend is the obvious omission that could have moved some extra tickets. Honestly, I think if they would have booked Robyn, Thom Yorke, the Racounters instead of some of the repeatable second line artists I think it would have gone a long way for the 30 plus crowd.
That being said, I personally think they tried to book these artists and were just told no thanks. It’s not a matter of them reaching out but more a matter of certain artists don’t care to play Coachella anymore.
Any of the bolded would greatly change my outlook on the lineup.

Weezer is a huge LA band that hasn’t played Coachella in 18 years . Not sure what’s lazy about it. You can not like something and it not be lazy. When I think lazy I think of some EDM DJ who hasn’t done anything of revelance but is brought back so soon cause they move tickets
For those of you who are saying that the difference is not booking the acts like WOD, Fleet Foxes, St. Vincent, and APC, did you see the crowd sizes at those shows? I went to FF and St. Vincent and it was pitiful. APC apparently was about 5,000-6,000 people. War on Drugs I heard was not very well attended either. Those are the types of bands I love to see at Coachella, but it makes sense that they'd book Tame, The 1975, and Weezer this time around...all three will have massive crowds.

I thought Fleet Foxes, WOD, and St Vincent were fine W1, definitely worse than 2015 though. But as I've said elsewhere, when you have The Weeknd, Beyonce, Eminem, SZA, HAIM, and ODESZA at the top of your bill, it follows that there are going to be fewer fans of bands like Fleet Foxes, WoD, and St Vincent. Very different than having AC/DC, Jack White, and Tame Impala at the top of the bill.

Seriously. They gave y'all a Fleet Foxes>War on Drugs>St Vincent run last year, and nobody showed up. (Also relevant to the asinine "PT breaks up campers at all costs" logic that dominates the scheduling threads, but I'm retired.)
Don't you think that maybe the small turnout for rock over the past several years has influenced how they book? Doesn't that make more sense than blaming it on the absence of a rock headliner, or spread out stages, or whatever else y'all can reach for to justify this bizarre position that they're struggling by not courting white dudes who read Stereogum in 2007?

This I wholeheartedly agree with. And I think this is why the Sonora is failing. The type of person to spend all day at the Sonora for those bookings is not going to pay the big bucks to do so if the top lines look like that.
I don't think we'll ever need to go to dual headliners, but instead of keeping the outdoor empty, they could book counter programming.
What if, for example, it looked like this:
Gambino vs Yeah Yeah Yeahs Tame Impala vs a J. Cole sized mainstream name, or have J. Cole earlier and then have Tame vs. one of the big DJs on the lineup Ariana vs The Strokes
And then replace Dillon with ZHU, and add a few key third line names (The Rapture reunion, Robyn, The Raconteurs). There you've just bolstered the "value add" for two different demographics.
ALL of the above were/are out there.
I think part of the problem is that GV started cannibalizing their own fest. FYF, Arroyo Seco, and things like Smoky Grooves/Just Like Heaven simply spreads the demand around a lot of niche lineups, it doesn't necessary create new demand.
EDIT: But I will also maintain firmly that the undercard is a veritable "who's who" of the trending and buzzed bands right now, even if most of you would rather have rock instead of the electronic, R&B, and hip-hop that's dominating music right now. I think minus a couple bands (Confidence Man and Gang of Youth) they nailed it. Not really my favorite sounds/bands, but hard to argue that they could have done better there, frankly.

Hey, hey, hey...my name is not "nobody"!!!
But yea, crowds were sparse and didn't improve much for JMJ who was after St Vincent and his was a hell of a set. I walked straight to the front about 20 minutes in.

lol this never happened
Yea Fleet Foxes were the next day post-Byrne, but I got their point...both fantastic sets

Well, 2/3 did, which hardly invalidates the larger point.
Edit: I didn't realize Byrne>Fleet Foxes happened. So if anything you turned my single example into two examples. Thanks!

Honestly pushing 250K tickets leads me to believe Coachella will go further from what the board wants (Vampire headlining, Chemical bros subbing, The National) and further into what they’ve been avoiding (Lil Skies would bring a huge crowd, more Lil rappers, and more label pushed pop acts and mega DJs)
idk, seems like the "lil" rapper bubble is kinda popping. I feel like Lil Skies isn't that big compared to any of the other hip hop acts we have this year.

How about the point of keeping acts like Carti and YG apart due to the fact that tens of thousands of people will be camping, compared to the fucking 30 people who camped for War On Drugs -> St. Vincent? lol

Lil Skies is bigger than Rico, Lizzie, Burna, almost everyone but YG and Childish. He has a date where Pump that he’s headlining.
Lil Baby and Gunna would have a huge crowd. Uzi fans have been nonstop about this album for the last 2 years. Trippie Red is still big even tho his album sucked (great manager). I would have to think of more but there are a ton of rolling loud acts that Coachella ignores but if the landscape continues to change it’ll be hard to ignore

Larger point being the turnout for rock bands, not the parenthetical point about set times. But I'm the dense one.
There's a lot of bands they should have/probably could have booked. I honestly think some of those sought after reunions or proven acts would have pushed past attendees back. I usually experience fomo (still feel bad about missing Soulwax and Moderat), but I'm not feeling that at all this year. Should be noted though that I've had my moment with Aphex so things might be different otherwise. There are enough Coachella-esque acts floating around this year that could have tempted more vets back though. That's not to say I wouldn't have a great time this year, but I don't feel like I'm really missing too much (not to knock on anyone's plans here at all). I would try and double up duties like they did with Panorama instead of booking themselves into a corner with their own niche festivals.

The Yuma could have been a lot better too this year.
When the lineup dropped I was super hyped on the Yuma lineup. "Yumachella 2.0" I texted my group.
Then the set times came out and all the techno I want to see is outside of Yuma, I'll barely be in there at all the entire weekend. Adriatique and Ame maybe but....

I think we still could have some of those acts misplaced and ya might get Polo & Pan or something different in there.
As some suspected, Rufus will have a part in the HP dome
How does the Antarctic Dome work? Do they have scheduled times for the specific projects? Would like to check that out but I probably wouldn't skip any bigger sets for it.

Same show all weekend, 20-30 minute intervals. Basically once one show ends, they get everyone out and let others in.
