I thought that was the standard speculation since he was saying similar stuff at Govball. That he'd probably wind down the "Gambino" name and eventually get back to music as Donald Glover or some other thing.
Either way, it would seem odd to completely hang it all up so early. Unless he really just wants to focus on film/tv going forward

He's probably just tired of kids screaming to play Worldstar at him. A lot of the older songs don't really hold up too well. Plus the whole "Childish Gambino" thing was like an AIM screen name he got from putting his name into a Wu Tang Clan name generator.
Kind of makes sense to just say "this is the end; enjoy the old material one last time. Going forward I am going by my own name and not playing that stuff anymore."
Or maybe he really is retiring from music. Doesn't seem like we have gotten a 100% straight answer. “I don't want to be a 40-year-old rapper." - Andre 3000

He played a 17 song setlist yesterday and only 4 were songs from his first two albums, so he's definitely not just playing a bunch of old stuff. It almost feels like a "Donald Glover" tour already.
I'm wondering when he's planning to release the album among all this.

That leak from RCA back in April said it was dropping in September (this month). Unless its changed since then; I would expect it any week now.. Maybe even this week since the tour just kicked off?

To me, the time to change his name was with Awaken. As it is now, the Childish Gambino persona is kind of jumbled and indistinct from his real name. That would have been a better time to make a clean break into more "serious" music or whatever.

Agreed. I think he missed his shot there; it has also lead to some pretty damn annoying crowds the last two times I saw him. Better late than never though.
I don't understand why some artists will start a tour before their album comes out. It just doesn't seem like a great idea. I guess it doesn't matter for Gambino since he never toured for "Awaken, My Love!" and he can sell out shows regardless.
Clearly Donald Glover needs our advice. Dude's path recently has been one failure after another.
I don't think it's going to affect his career or popularity. I just don't see what the point is of doing it now.
Because his work and name recognition outside of Childish Gambino is still only just starting to eclipse the Childish name.
'Awaken' would've definitely been a good time, but it's not like this is much later than that in the grand scope of the career he's probably envisioning.

Fair enough. It still seems just a little bit silly to hype the end of Gambino when it's pretty likely he'll still be playing a lot of the same stuff moving forward. But ultimately that's pretty typical "farewell tour" bullshit that lots of artists do. It's always annoying, but it's never gonna stop.

Yeah I'd think he at least fully intends on taking some sort of break from music. I just don't imagine it lasting any longer than like...5 years?
And it's still not as pointless to me as Nick Murphy changing his name but festivals still having to remind us he's Chet Faker on every poster.
That is true. His newer stuff is a lot different than when he was coming up together with people like Flume and it would just make sense to just drop that bit..

I agree. I think its a holdover from the old business model whereby an artist toured to sell records, rather than the live show being the product like it is today.
I think headlining Coachella will be his retirement performance. The crowd will be mostly wearing black suits, white shirts, and skinny black ties, and it will be a very somber affair. And Glover will never ever return to music again

Jungle did that this year and I've honestly no interest in their new album anymore even though I really dig their music.

Yeah I wonder if that sort of thing is intentional or sometimes the artist just doesn't have the album ready in time. I thought it was weird that Anderson .Paak pre-headlined at Bonnaroo without a new album (not that I'm complaining). I thought that album was supposed to come out this year but I guess it's coming out next year now? Also when Jay Z and Beyonce released their collaboration album in the middle of their tour, that was odd.

I think there’s a combination of factors. I bet most of the time bands just don’t finish their new albums in time. Other times you know you’re between albums but you’re doing a small tour to keep your name in the mix while you work on it. Bands want to get out there and prove they can still fill rooms now, so when they do release the album they can book bigger better rooms (or get better festival slots) on the support tour.
What was really the worst was when Kendrick dropped a fire album while on tour and didn’t perform it.

Or when Haim played almost every fest again without a new album

I agree as well, thought the album would drop few days before the tour started
This does help with his Coachella performance though
His last 2 shows with his new album and maybe this will be the only time he ever does that album live. Unless he comes back as Gambino, but that could take years.
His headlining spot is deserved
2-3 more months for the 3rd headliner to be confirmed, wish it was sooner though

I think Kendrick probably had it in his contract to debut the album at Coachella, probably like how Gambino will perform its debut at Coachella

Pretty sure he's talking about how Kendrick barely played any TPAB songs on his festival run in 2015.
