2019 would be a perfect year to do Coachella for me but absolutely no way I am headed there for Rhianna- Gambino - Timberlake. Then again, not like we are seeing rock headliners anytime soon so I guess I'll just have to go one year with even looking at the lineup.
Just go. 2018 was maybe my least favorite headliner set ever and I had an absolute blast. Even if you left when the headliners got on at 11:15 PM or so, you'd have 11 hours of amazing music, plus you'll almost certainly find something you love in the last 100 mins of the day.

I think it’s funny this message board generally finds the rock headliners offered up to be boring or borderline headliner status, then is up in arms about there being no rock headliner. I saw a dozen good rock acts last year at this fest and wasn’t worried about what time they played or what stage. What other festival is booking these rock headliners everyone so badly wants? Take this with the caveat that I wouldn’t care if they booked Pearl Jam, Foo Fighters or Metallica because they aren’t unique festival bookings. On a personal level, I’ve found them to all to be painfully boring for the last decade plus as well. Rock will come back around in the next couple years here possibly with some bigger acts releasing anticipated records, reunions more likely to happen in coming years, and the giant pop acts of the early 2000’s being pretty booked up. The best rock acts around right now are club level to theater level acts and this festival gets that.

On another note, book Wolf Eyes or ADULT. as cannon fodder against one of the headliners so I can go melt in a tent late late at night. They played a show together in a rundown airport here last weekend and I’m still on a mental buzz from the show.

That show looked awesome.
I feel like an asshole teilling everyone about it, but it was a pretty perfect show. El Club is doing great things here with unique acts and venues. That show further fueled my fire to get a Day For Night/iii Points festival here with all the abandoned and beautiful buildings around but these are discussions for another time and another thread I suppose.
If you can close out with something like Soulwax > Jamiroquai, literally who cares about headliners
Better yet, you had Blac Coffe throw a giant party>DREAMS putting on an extremely weird show> the two amazing sets you mentioned. We need something to talk about though and I’m guilty of the same shit I guess.

Big same. Love Childish Gambino but I have no interest in JT or Rihanna and seeing Gambino next week so unless the undercard wows me, I'm out. Might try for glastonbury though.

The music festival internet is usually pretty contradictory.
Where are the rock headliners? Rock headliners are boring! I don't care about the headliners. Only talks about headliners. We want new and unique headliners. This act has never headlined before so they aren't big enough to be a headliner. etc.

Nobody hates a music festival more than its own message board.

You dont like any of those 3 at all?
And even if you dont, they are only 3 acts
Nah I really don't. I'm not saying I wouldn't enjoy them, but it's just not my cup of tea. I listen to Gambino here and there, but I really don't listen to the other two at all. I've just always maintained.. and perhaps many would think it stupid, that I have to have at least one headliner that in some way I'd look forward to travel for a festival. There are just too many options at this point. Coachella is close to the point where I could tell myself it didn't matter at all, like to travel abroad for a festival, but still. It's just the way I look at it.

Very fair points, I live in LA so the drive is not too bad (2 hours) and I am mostly into rap/pop/electronic/dance so these changes are fine for me
I don't get how so many people travel out of state or even country for Coachella unless its a very special act and there are multiple acts they want to see each day

Guys last night I explained to my brother how Gambino was dropping the name, but probably still going to make music as Donald Glover; and he responded "it sounds like that guy likes to jerk people off."

I like the cut of your jib. I saw Wolf Eyes with garageland at Hopscotch one year. Melt is a good word for my reaction to it.

Honestly, if it lines up for you to do it, go. There is so much going on each night that I'm sure you'll have a couple other options of sick shows during the headliners that you would be interested in.
Those 3 headliners aren't my usual cup of tea at all but they all have bangers and I haven't seen any of them before. There are a lot of undercard rock acts I'd love to see that could make up for it so I'm completely cool with them going that route too.

Got this e-mail from The Hold Steady mailing list today announcing two hometown shows in October:
"We’ve fit a lot of things into 15 years of The Hold Steady. We’ve released 6 albums and many other songs. We’ve played countless shows on three different continents. We’ve done most of the late night TV shows. We've played shows in all 50 of the United States. We’ve played Glastonbury. We’ve played Coachella. We’ve opened up for The Rolling Stones. And The Replacements. We’ve been personally insulted by Don Rickles. The list goes on... But, somehow, we’ve never played the 7th Street Entry. Until now."
I know it probably means nothing, but they are a top 3 wishlist for me for the poster next year and seeing them acknowledge Coachella in a positive manner like that has me dreaming again.

People using their disposable income to attend one of the best music festivals in the world is a concept that perplexes you?
Maribou State playing an LA GV show in March, wouldn't surprise me if they played.
I think this means they will be out. It could go either way, I guess.
It could go either way but I’m guessing they won’t be there. It depends on how well the sales go. For example, I think Kacey Musgraves is still in play even though she announced LA shows a while ago since they sold out instantly.

If you are going to travel far, why not travel to another festival that suits your taste better
Many people, not just on here, say the lineup is disappointing and then still choose to go just b/c its Coachella

Yeah - it's a destination / cultural landmark just as much as it is a "music festival." You're surrounded by perfect weather, breathtaking scenery, pool parties, beautiful people, etc. and the lineup is typically one of the top ~2-3 in the country. Even if "your tastes" don't line up with Coachella is, you should be able to find ~3 shows you really want to see and ~8-10 you could see in a day at a minimum if you like any type of music. This isn't hard.
