Got this e-mail from The Hold Steady mailing list today announcing two hometown shows in October:
"We’ve fit a lot of things into 15 years of The Hold Steady. We’ve released 6 albums and many other songs. We’ve played countless shows on three different continents. We’ve done most of the late night TV shows. We've played shows in all 50 of the United States. We’ve played Glastonbury. We’ve played Coachella. We’ve opened up for The Rolling Stones. And The Replacements. We’ve been personally insulted by Don Rickles. The list goes on... But, somehow, we’ve never played the 7th Street Entry. Until now."
I know it probably means nothing, but they are a top 3 wishlist for me for the poster next year and seeing them acknowledge Coachella in a positive manner like that has me dreaming again.
Semi related but seeing The Hold Steady in the entry would be cool as hell and also I am maybe one of three people on this board who 100% also love to see them at Coachella.

Do people not like The Hold Steady? Would have killed to get them in a tent when they were playing Boys and Girls in America in full a couple years ago.
If you are going to travel far, why not travel to another festival that suits your taste better
Many people, not just on here, say the lineup is disappointing and then still choose to go just b/c its Coachella
Yeah - it's a destination / cultural landmark just as much as it is a "music festival." You're surrounded by perfect weather, breathtaking scenery, pool parties, beautiful people, etc. and the lineup is typically one of the top ~2-3 in the country. Even if "your tastes" don't line up with Coachella is, you should be able to find ~3 shows you really want to see and ~8-10 you could see in a day at a minimum if you like any type of music. This isn't hard.
Fair enough, its a good time regardless and there is music for everyone

But idk if 100 degrees is perfect weather haha
Weather during the day is hot, but it's not nearly as bad as Bonnaroo. Once 5-6 p.m. hits, it cools down quite nicely and is lovely.

I think it's a bit hard to tell what their popularity is now since as of late they've been playing smaller venues but often selling out multiple nights. I'm just going to say that their fanbase is almost certainly not what it was 10 years ago but whatever's left is very devoted.

the festival is also in april, so the sun goes down at like 7, so you get a solid 5 hours of sets at night. when I was there in 17, it even got a little chilly at night/early morning which made sleeping in a lot easier.
I say yes to going to Coachella at least once. I've been to Bonnaroo, Lolla, FYF, etc. and it's on another level in terms of most what you'd rate a festival by. Even with the continual change to pop, and social media influencers, and blah blah blah it's still an incredible time.
If you've never been, can afford it, and have an inkling, I'd go almost regardless of lineup. Even the worse days of Coachella in the two lineup era (Sunday '16, Sunday '18) I had more than enough stuff to do.
The great debate of Coachella 2019(and future): "Go to Coachella regardless of lineup, or explore other options and locations?"
Looking at the shows you typically go to, I wouldn’t say you should go to Coachella regardless of the lineup. The type of music you seem to like is exactly what they’re sorta phasing out. Now if the lineup at all interests you, definitely give it a try; the festival is amazing. Plus they typically do a great job of scheduling, so even if you consider the lineup to be in the “good but not great” range you should still be able fill your days with music you’re into (look at this year’s schedule as a for instance).
Personally, I can do this fest “regardless of the lineup,” but I am typically at least casually interested in checking out the more mainstream acts, and the Yuma stage almost always has something going I’m into. But if you don’t have those as a safety net it may not be worth flying blind.

I’ve said this before and I’ll say it again but when people are disappointed when the Coachella lineup drops at the beginning of the festival year it’s not like they are usually super hyped about the other options for the rest of the festival year usually. If Coachella is very good, it is more likely that the other festivals that year will be good and there will be less of a reason to travel for a “down” Coachella. It’s kinda an odd situation

This is a good point, and it's part of the reason I always follow Coachella rumors and news even though it is unlikely I will attend. The Coachella lineup is the harbinger of the rest of the US festival season.

Yea that’s kind of my issue, is that the music they are zeroing in on now probably isn’t option A,B,C, or D for me in terms of my preferences of genre. That’s why I want to wait for a big time headliner that I can hook onto, so if the rest of it is mostly void of my likes, I can have a clear cut reason to make the trek.

I'm 20 lmao I feel this. I do want to make the trip someday though. Tbh I didn't think there were anyone younger than me on these forums.
I just went for the first time this year at 27. Give it a few years, you'll get out there eventually.
My wife and I had our first child this past february. We missed this year but will be back next year. This will be our fifth trip in six years. I'm 32 (33 next week)
