Southwest flights just went up for Coachella's 2 weekends. We're trying to figure out the best way to manage the timing/price. I think we're gonna fly into LAX, should be there at 10:30am. They have a nonstop from Chicago and hopefully traffic won't be that bad at that hour on a Thursday. The way home is up for grabs. SD and Ontario r more expensive but I don't want to have to worry about LAX traffic Monday afternoon/evening. Any tips from people who have gone Southwest would be greatly appreciated.

I’ve done Southwest in and it of LAX. Traffic getting to Indio on Thursday has always been fine, although the airport and the rental car lots are really busy. Getting back in the Monday can stressful but my experience has always been that once you get to LA proper you get in the HOV lane and traffic is fine. If you’re flying out in the afternoon you’ll have time.
i could use some advice now that the flights are up for april. my chance of actually doing coachella next year went up when we realized that my husband's spring break is the week ending in weekend 2 (which i already bought a ticket for), and i won't be trying to figure out how to do it solo. since neither of us have been to california, we're looking to plan a road trip ending the trip with the festival. my initial thoughts are to fly into vegas and work our way down to palm springs throughout the week (and fly out of lax). any suggestions for where we should be spending time during the trip?

Flew Southwest from STL to LAX weekend one in 2017. I had zero problems getting from LAX to Indio on Thursday. My flight landed relatively early on Thursday morning, around 9:00-ish. Can't give you any advice about Monday since I didn't go back to LAX until Wednesday afternoon. Just be aware that renting a car from one airport and dropping off at another can cost some serious cash. Probably not worth it. Just choose a late flight on Monday and give yourself plenty of time to get from Indio back to LAX.

If you don't mind camping, go to Joshua Tree National Park. Even for just one night to experience the night sky and how insanely quiet it can get in the middle of nowhere.

generally, we'll need to be in places with internet access because he'll be at the tail end of grad school and we're not sure if he'll need to finish up any work while we're gone. but that's the one thing we've already decided is absolutely happening.
I checked Ontario and SD but they didn't have the flight times I wanted at a decent price. The roundtrip to LAX was 27,000 SW miles which is nothing. Plus they're both nonstop which is HUGE. It's already a long trip, I don't want to add another 2 hurs on top of it.
I've used LAX 75% of the time. They all work. I used Ontario my first year, but wouldn't again. I just prefer to start out my journey in an actual city.
edit: I would echo what those have said about Joshua Tree. Even if you aren't settling in for the night, it makes for an amazing day hike.

Bad news for people who hopped on the Embassy Suites deal or are otherwise staying in Palm Desert. I emailed them to ask if they were bringing back the Albertson’s stop and this was the answer
Thank you for reaching out! At this point in time, we do not have any future plans to add additional shuttle stops. We apologize for any inconvenience. You can view our available shuttle stops here. If you have any additional questions, please let us know!
For reference, I typically leave our house rental / hotel around 11 AM on Monday and drop someone off at LAX and we don't get there til like 3:30ish. So prepare for like a ~4-5 hour drive unless you are busting out of there super early.
I'm surprised more people don't fly into Las Vegas
I flew into Vegas this year and had no issues. Hung out in Vegas for a few hours and gambled, then made a few stops on the way including Joshua Tree at sunset which was pretty awesome. Got to my hotel by around 8:00 at night. The drive through the desert was pretty cool too, as somebody coming from the east coast.
Next time I go to Coachella, we're talking about flying into San Diego to check that out.

The drive in from San Diego is pretty beautiful through the mountains.
