Did a quick seat check on the upcoming LA shows for our "fringe" headliner candidates next year:
Arctic Monkeys (2 shows, Hollywood Bowl, October): First show more or less completely sold out, second show has a lot of availability - probably around ~40% of the Bowl Childish Gambino (2 Shows, Forum, Sept/Oct): Same with AM. First show a sell out, second show struggling to move a lot of tickets, half filled right now Florence + the Machine (1 Show, Hollywood Bowl, September): Pretty puzzled by this. Bowl still has about 1/3 of tickets remaining including some good ~$65 seats in sections D/E and G which usually go fairly quickly for in-demand Bowl shows. Not saying GV can't do what they want - and we're still a ways from show time - but a little surprised this wasn't an instant sell-out
I actually cannot see Royal Blood getting payed 300k or something and HAIM only 30k. 10x more is a huge difference. But maybe around 30k is what they normally ask to play (even that is kinda weird for a band that has such high billings at different fests). I'd see Pixies asking that amount of money, but not Royal Blood. But then I think they wouldn't be so furious about it that they'd fire their agent about it.

Yeah I forgot about it too because Kendrick had the new album so it was a diff set with diff production but still. Can't say it's impossible. I'm probably one of the few on here who would be jacked for a top line of JT - Metallica - Florence or Gambino.

I’ve seen em all recently or will have by the end of this year but that’s also my own fault for going to so many fests. Most of my wishes for variation are pipe dreams. Metallica JT and Flo wouldn’t be bad at all.

So I've checked their setlists and there are only a few options where this could've happend (I'm sorry, I just wanna know lol) - Lost Lake (billed #8th behind Pixies, subbed for Chance The Rapper whilst Pixies where on the second stage) - Life Is Beautiful (billed #12th behind Schoolboy Q, I'm guessing, played on the second stage right before MGMT) - Ohana Festival (billed #5th behind Pixies, subbed for Jack Johnson) - Reading & Leeds (billed eh? idk??, closed the second stage against Muse) - Splendour In The Grass (billed #5th behind Royal Blood, subbed for the The xx) - Glastonbury (billed #26th behind .Paak, played on the second stage 4th to last before The Courtneers) - Tinderbox (billed #3th, played, subbed for Kings Of Leon)
The only justifiable one here would be Tinderbox. Anything else would need some sort of excuse (ie paycut for billing) but none of those seem big enough to even justify that.
This is kinda my issue with the JT rumor, is he the “#1” on the poster next year? Usually there’s a big name that’s rare or unique. JT is undoubtedly a big name, but getting him on the tail end of a tour off a shitty album with a bunch of winter California and SW dates isn’t all that special. It doesn’t have the newsworth factor of GnR, OutKast, or a Beyonce one off. Even AC/DC was launching a tour in 2015. It also seems unlikely that he’s gonna drop another album, and less likely that if he did it’d be any better than his last album.
So if JT is on the poster, that means there will be a real “wow” #1, or a lame set of headliners. But the pool of headliners that are more newsworthy than him is small. Lame set of headliners or he won’t be there at all make more sense to me.
Pop-wise you can't top Beyonce. Rock-wise you can't top a GNR reunion. There isn't a headliner-level electronic artist that is worth a damn. And I can't think of any midcard-type act, regardless of genre, that is ready to make the jump.
The only possible exciting headliner-level reunion is R.E.M.
I feel like we're in for a long season of mostly underwhelming headliners across all festivals.
So I'm starting to think the headlining rock act is gonna get left out again... I'm def down for JT in that pop slot, but if they want a female headliner for sure, you gotta think the other will probably be a hip-hop/rap/r&b type act since that's what the kids like now. I'm hoping for Metallica but if it's not them who could it realistically be? Maybe a split bill with AM & Florence? There just aren't many options that make sense. Mumford popping up on Voodoo I guess could put them in the mix.
Justin Timberlake - Depeche Mode - Nine Inch Nails
edit: Someone's mother who does lighting for NIN was overheard saying these names while transferring from the subway to an Uber (couldn't confirm whether Lyft or Uber actually)

Previously I thought AM could headline, but still be put in a co position. Just read up on TBH&C performance in the US, and it debuted at number 8, while AM was at number 6. S this isn't likely to move the needle on them in a big way. Anyone think they would take a sub position?

They haven't subbed before. It would be the logical next step.

Headliners touring dud albums seem to be the thing for 2019 tho.
I'd really prefer they sub or don't play at all. I'm seeing them at Lolla this year and it's not like their Coachella set would be any different. That's okay if they're gonna be a sub, but I'm just hoping for something a little more interesting from a Coachella headliner. Maybe I'm expecting too much though.

For real? I don't know why but I always assumed they had subbed sometime between 09-12 or something.

There's almost always one dud headliner. The Weeknd, Calvin Harris, Drake, Phoenix (I like them but def not a headliner), etc.
If AM's the worst we do, it's a pretty good year. But, yeah, I'm seeing them twice this fall, so don't want to see them next year as much as I would have had they debuted the album this year. And I highly doubt they accept a sub after being top line at every fest they booked this fall.

Phoenix was the best attended headlining show I walked by Weekend 2 of 2013, you could have included any of the headliners that year though tbh.
