Maybe, I get it for bigger names but I don’t know if it matters much for smaller or even mid names such as Pusha T, DVSN, Jauz..
A lot of people, such as myself, rather see tons of acts at a festival rather than dropping 40-50 for someone they like but don’t love
If I see tons of those names (Like but don’t love artists) missing from a poster, I will be discouraged to buy. Might push me to go to more concerts
For the smaller artists, I generally agree. But the top 2-3 lines do a lot of the heavy lifting when it comes to moving tickets, and they had less exclusivity with those acts this year than they usually do.
For top lines I semi agree. But even if the headliners played before or after radius clause, these 3 are underwhelming.
They better not even think about raising ticket prices next year.
Next year they should choose between 2, if not 3 of these: Rolling Stones, Metallica, Reunion such as Oasid or RATM if at all possible, Rihanna, Drake, Kanye/WTT with Jay Z, Frank, Daft Punk.
If they blow their load on main 2 and stacked lineup, 3rd headliner can be a fringe act such as Chance, Vampire Weekend
Sucks that they need to throw big names on top to move as many tickets as they need to, because star power doesn't make a great festival, this was the best year in my 4 years of going and it had the least amount of star power. But I know casual music fans who just want to be seen are a huge chunk of who buy tickets to these things. It's pretty annoying when people would say they wouldn't go to a set unless they were super familiar with the act. Like go and discover something new and have a blast, just rock out. I had never heard Perfume and most people in that tent never did, but that was one of the happiest and fun sets of the whole weekend and we all had a blast and found a new favorite. People festival wrong. I do know that from a popularity standpoint, Childish shouldn't have headlined and they shouldn't have bumped Tame a year too soon. Ariana was the only name that held weight. She's a solid 1 but not with Tame and Gambino behind her.

Rap: Kanye, Chance (with new album), Travis Scott (with new album) Rock: Coldplay, Metallica, System of a Down (great Friday/cheapest option, with or without new album, huge fan base), Vamp Weekend (probably a sub still) R&B: Frank Ocean Pop: Adele, Bruno Mars, Maroon 5, Justin Timberlake, Rihanna Electronic: Daft Punk, Swedish House Mafia
System/Adele/Kanye is my wish list but if they pick 2 heavy and 1 light artist from this list, they will sell great.

I also think there’s just general fatigue with this festival, and its reputation as the basic bitch festival is so so strong. Did the crowd seem younger this year at all? When I first saw the lineup it struck me as an attempt to attract a younger/new and more diverse crowd than usual.

Sucks but it’s true, especially when you’re charging 424 a ticket. To make people feel like they’re getting their money’s worth you need some expensive names.
I think it’s a good year, but lacked Star fire power. Gambino disappointed a bit to me, no new album was a shame. Tame still no new album, looked ok. Ariana I heard was meh and had issues.

I like Travis, but I feel like that will disappoint tons of people on forums/reddit and older crowd. But could appeal to tons of younger people. Still Need to keep balance of age demographic, need older people to spend money.
SOD would be disappointing. Sub makes more sense Shm also dissapointing. They’ve fallen off and so has main room edm. Sub makes more sense

Ariana was great. She came out very strong. The Nsync moment was special. By the soundbooth my group had a blast. When Nicki first came out, there was a lot of energy. It's unfortunate that there were technical problems. Grande handled the while set well. The Diddy moment was very special as well. It was nice to pay respects to loss in hip hop in that way. Not showy and not too emotional but celebratory in a way. Peaceful but fun. I just didn't enjoy the boyfriends and random guys that didn't want to enjoy the moment and have fun. I got the impression they would never be satisfied with her music and would go online and show their indifference to it.
Perfume was amazing. Exceeded what i saw in videos. Couldn't help but smile the entire time. I lived my best life moshing to Shame and The Garden. Very good energy there. A blast to hold go the singer and help him crowd surf. He trusted us to show up. When I walked into The Garden, the crowd was better than I anticipated. Blood Orange demonstrated his natural musicality. Beautiful.
this talk of worst year financially in a while, they did still sell out right?
No way this is less profitable than 2013 where the camping lot was 1/3 empty weekend 2, and people left in droves during RHCP’s set. Or any year after expansion, other than last year for that matter.

Key word here is profit. It’s pretty widely reported that Artist’s fees have risen rapidly in the past few years. Given what some of the Aphex cost estimates were, it could easily be less profitable

I mean......2013 was a while ago dude.
I have a few theories/thoughts about why the financial performance is supposedly weaker:
1. The subs.....I mean one dropped out, Janelle Monae has toured extensively already, and Khalid IMO wouldn't convince anyone to buy tickets who wasn't already going to go for Ari.
2. GV probably "overpaid" for a few artists relative to their draw. Gesaf probably cost a pretty penny, Aphex must have been expensive and although he is a huge draw, it sounds like one "rarity" wasn't enough to convince a lot of disinterested boardies.
3. The Kanye effect: GV reportedly paid MASSIVELY for Ari, most likely due to the last minute booking. If they hadn't wasted their time with 'Ye, and booked her along with her tour (or any other headliner), they could have saved themselves a ton of cash. Sunday Service I'm sure was expensive, and didn't seem to move the needle on sales at all. Hot Take: after this, I really am doubting his draw as a headliner in 2020.
4. Homogeneous second-line bookings: Compared to 2018 and 2017, these second lines are so weak and not very diverse. 2 "rock" acts, crappy EDM, tons of poppy hip hop. I absolutely respect GV for booking the international acts, but the rest of these lines are very "meh" for loyal, long-term attendees.
5. EDM Repeats: I strongly believe this had an impact on sales. Yes all the artists booked are big "draws," but they just played 2-2 years ago. EDM artists tour so much that most folks who are interested have most likely seen them within the span of a few months. I'll eat crow on the Diplo booking, as he tried to do something unique. All others (Snake, Zedd, Dillon) basically played the same sets they've been touring for years. Zedd LITERALLY so, playing the same songs in the same order as he's done on tour for ~3 years. Booking hot garbage repeats does nothing to draw the crowd you lost to EDC/Ultra, especially after they felt alienated last year.
(5) Less music, they legit only had five poster acts on the outdoor on Sunday. The Mojave was averaging 7-8 poster acts compared to 10-12 from prior years. T
This whole "less music" thing is depressing. We definitely had a lot of weird dark spots this year.....and last with Bey.
Reducing scheduling diversity and offering less choices is an easy way to lose business.

understood, and that makes sense. but if higher artist fees are the reason for lower profitability then we can't make the argument that people didn't want to see artist X or Y, ergo coachella made less money. tickets sold just fine. it wasn't lower demand for the product coachella is selling, it was a higher cost for the supply.

It would be a lot more fun to talk about all the good music people saw this weekend than worry about how much money Goldenvoice did or didn’t make. At least for a few days

I’ll go through all the shows I saw in a bit when I catch up at work a little more, but I will throw in again that the crowd was noticeably more diverse this year. Lots of native Spanish speakers, lots of Asian fans (I assume Koreans but I don’t know). Age ranges seemed about the same to me but that’s hard to tell, same with overall attendance.
Only set I went to with an embarrassingly sparse crowd was Nocturnal Sunshine.
Friday: Let's Eat Grandma>craft beer>half of Beach Fossils>RAT BOY>half of Calypso Rose>Kacey Musgraves>Anderson .Paak>little bit of Polo & Pan>U.S. Girls>half of Khruangbin>Janelle Monae>bailed on Nina for Charlotte Gainsbourg>Childish Gambino
Saturday: serpentwithfeet (who was great but ended 20 minutes early for some reason, so I went to)>the end of Ty Segall & White Fence (heard they had technical problems in the front half but the back half was good)>shame>beginning of Hop Along>Mac DeMarco>Deep Dish>Christine and the Queens>Aphex Twin>Tame Impala
Sunday: Cola Boyy>Iceage>most of Pusha T>Unknown Mortal Orchestra>Lizzo>end of Blood Orange>Gesaffelstein>Jon Hopkins>stopped by each of Cirez D, Rufus in Do Lab, Kaytranada, and ended with Ariana
An amazing year. Every act I saw was on point with the exception of Nina (who just seemed like she was in the wrong environment for the type of show she wanted to do). Didn't enjoy Cirez or Rufus that much Sunday night, but that's mostly because I'm not that into what they play as DJs. Wish I could've seen Parcels but that Aphex Twin set was once in a lifetime. And it's really easy to walk from the end of Aphex to Tame and get a good spot; I only missed one song even though Aphex went over.
Interpol & The Walkmen 11.23 I Am Morbid/Suffocation 11.26 King Diamond 11.29 Sadistic Intent/Massacre 11.30 70K Tons Of Metal 2025 Hell's Heroes 2025 Sick New World 2025 Maryland Deathfest 2025
Finally found some time to share my opinions about the last weekend. First of all, although slightly weaker lineup compared to previous years, this was a pretty stacked weekend full of music and other fun activities. It was my second Coachella (I also went on 2015), and I like the new layout a lot, as it was very easy to go from one stage to another. I tried to spend some time in all the stages (with the exception of new Heineken House) and tents, and I can say new Sahara is pretty impressing. I can understand why Kid Cudi wanted to play Sahara rather than Coachella stage as Sahara is the most impressive of all the stages, including the main stage. Yuma was pretty amazing too, but I was there only for Ross From Friends, and I would spend more time if they booked a better lineup. Antarctic Dome was pretty meh, and although it's a good getaway from the sun, it's not worth much. HP Lounge had a good lineup and I was briefly there during Dam-funk, but they should've had a better soundsystem there, especially since they booked a nice lineup over the weekend.
Weather was perfect, but they should put some shaded areas for Outdoor stage. Crowds was more than okay, and although most were on the younger side, I didn't see many obnoxious people with the exception of a group of people at Ariana's set. It might also because I wasn't in Sahara or DoLab stages most of the time. Very diverse group of people as well. Most crowded on Saturday, followed by Sunday and then Friday. Coachella's own merch was pretty bad in my opinion, so I ended up getting an Aphex Twin tshirt. They have a 'boutique' merch store (next to the Record Store) where you can purchase old posters and more personalized merch and that was a nice touch. Food and drink options were plentiful with minimal lines no matter when you go, but I ended up getting Spicy Pie most of the time as I think it's one of the better deals available. Both speakeasy bars were very nice, and I strongly recommend going if you can since the drinks were pretty strong (and $16 for a glass of cocktail) and it was nice to have some break from the crowds and all. Tiki themed bar was in "Beer West" section next to Cupcake Vineyards, and Hush Hush Disco was in Indio Central Market next to the pupusa place. No password or whatever is necessary, just go the entrance, and say you're there for the Tiki/Hush Hush, and some gentleman will escort you to the entrance.
Finally, music. I have seen 25 or so sets throughout the weekend, and it was mostly good with few exceptions. Worst performance I've seen was Mac DeMarco's as it was very sloppy (and I know he's goofy and all but this was very bad) and I don't think I'll ever make an attempt to see him again. I don't understand the hype for YG, I watched some of his set while I was in the line for the ferris wheel. It wasn't bad but it was just meh. I was left slightly disappointed after serpentwithfeet and Tierra Whack's sets, hopefully they'll have a much better show next time I see them. Although it was fun to listen to Kacey Musgraves, soundbleed from another stage kinda ruined it for me, and some portions of her set didn't translate in a festival environment I think. I'd ideally wanna see her in her own show. Among the few shows I've seen in Sonora (shame, Javiera Mena, Men I Trust, Ocho Ojos), the tent was at least 50% full, and the fact that you can have a drink and watch from behind was pretty nice.
I skipped Tame Impala, because I've already seen them seven times and I'm not gonna attempt to see them again unless they have more new songs. I caught Little Simz instead, and I can say it was a pretty good & fun set although it was underattended. Similarly for Charlotte Gainsbourg, Perfume, Rosalia, and even for Four Tet. All underattended, but they were all very good. Among the last four names I've counted, they should've just had Perfume perform in Sahara, they would be fantastic there. Speaking of Sahara, Blackpink there was a blast, although I could only see 15 or so minutes as they clashed with Rosalia, which was the best set of the weekend for me. Lizzo packed Mojave though, more than Aphex Twin for sure. Both of those sets were very good. Lizzo's stage presence is amazing and I can see her getting bigger in the next few years. I was in the 5th row from the front for Aphex Twin and it was a magical experience to watch him so close. I'm so glad he performed for about 100 minutes, anything less than that would not be sufficient. Among the sets I've seen at the main stage; Janelle Monae, Childish Gambino, Ariana Grande and Mon Laferte (although quite empty) were all very good in their own ways.
To sum up, here are my top 10 sets:
1. Rosalia 2. Aphex Twin 3. Perfume 4. Janelle Monae 5. Childish Gambino 6. Mon Laferte 7. Lizzo 8. Ariana Grande 9. Four Tet 10. Charlotte Gainsbourg
Will probably go again next year regardless, but I hope they book slightly more diverse lineup with more rarities this time and make it a much better overall experience.

It was really easy to get a good spot for Janelle, just approach from the left side of the stage. I could go all the way near VIP section, 10 minutes ago before her set.

Would echo this. Left side Main is possible to get in front of the sound stage leaving halfway through Khruangbin; I didn't because I prefer to be a little further back with my friends, but in general this held true throughout the weekend. Only act this wasn't possible for was Ariana, you needed to be there around the end of Khalid to have any chance I'd guess (some of my friends left Hopkins halfway through and ended up just in front of the second row of towers).
