The Frames 30th Anniversary show has been rescheduled from September 22 to September 21 of next year. The did give a refund option but the ticket wasn't too expensive so I will hold on to it. Although, it will technically be their 31st Anniversary by then. I expect cancellations/reschedules of my Inhaler show and Sea.Hear.Now any time now, especially since Ohana just rescheduled to next year (Pearl Jam, The Frames and Inhaler are all still playing that fest). And Thom Yorke needs to make some decisions too...
5/1 Belle & Sebastian 5/17 Echo & the Bunnymen 6/7 Hozier 6/8 Governors Ball 6/20 Future Islands 7/25 Billy Joel 8/5 Green Day/Smashing Pumpkins, etc. 8/21 The Gaslight Anthem 9/7 Bikini Kill 9/10 St. Vincent 9/13 The National, TWOD, Lucius 9/14 PULP 9/27 IDLES/The Walkmen 10/4 Bleachers 10/6 Vampire Weekend 10/9 Sting
I'm confused because I recently got the notifications about the reschedules in the fall for Shamir and Caribou as though they are still happening. Is this correct?
And now it's just Thom left...Inhaler just canceled for September - that one had been rescheduled from April. Even if Thom reschedules again I will take the refund, almost took a pass on it in the first place! The one bright spot with all this is that I will have my credit card paid off by the end of the year and be 100% debt-free, I think for the first time in my adult life!

I have to imagine they are trying to reschedule the Thom Yorke dates, otherwise that would have been cancelled by now. I'm now starting to wonder if summer 2021 is too ambitious for live shows at this point.
Do you want to dance while also thinking about all the ways you've failed as a human?
UPCOMING SHOWS 5/14 - Neil Young & Crazy Horse @ Forest Hills 8/17 - King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard @ Forest Hills 9/4 - Pearl Jam @ MSG 9/7 - Pearl Jam @ Wells Fargo Center 9/11 - St. Vincent @ Brooklyn Paramount 9/13 - Lucius/The War on Drugs/The National @ Forest Hills
Sheesh, Thom Yorke in a month was FINALLY postponed officially (I think Thom himself has had everything postponed on his site for awhile now) although it said they are still trying to reschedule the event, and no refunds at this time. I am probably going to put in for the refund once they deign to do it though.

Does anyone remember if Beach Bunny officially cancelled their 2020 tour (including MHOW) or if the events are postponed? I bought via Stubhub and the event in their system is in that weird postponed limbo but I can't find any other info about the show.

Rough Trade is relocating. No word yet on whether the new location will have an attached venue, but if I were a betting man, and given the current state of everything, I'd wager it won't.
It's a shame. I saw some really kick-ass shows there.

They also said that there won't be a music venue in the new place. Sad, indeed.
The Weeknd rescheduled a slew of area dates for 2022:
February 5 – Newark, NJ – Prudential Center February 11 – Brooklyn, NY – Barclays Center February 12 – Brooklyn, NY – Barclays Center April 4 – New York, NY – Madison Square Garden April 5 – New York, NY – Madison Square Garden April 7 – Elmont, NY – UBS Arena
First show I've seen announced at the new arena on LI. Is he big enough to do SIX area arena dates?

So, Cuomo just announced that arenas can start operating on Feb. 23rd, with the following caveats:
10% capacity
Attendees must have a negative PCR test result on a test taken within 72 hours of the event.
Face coverings/social distancing/temp check required.
Mandatory, assigned, socially distanced seating.
They're starting with a Brooklyn Nets game at Barclays, but I wonder if we might see a live music event crop up there or at another seated venue in the coming months.
Not that I'd go, but it's an interesting development.
(Also, of course, here's hoping the variants don't kick us in the ass and make this all moot)

Is there fear the variants may prolong this even more? I thought the vaccines were doing well treating those?
TL; DR: It depends which vaccines, which variants, and what your metric for success is.
- Pfizer and Moderna (the mRNA vaccines) have tested vaccinated sera vs. the new variants in vitro (meaning only in a lab), and found only minor reduction in neutralization vs. the UK variant, to the point at which they don't think it'll make any difference in effectiveness. They found moderate reduction in neutralization vs. the SA variant, but again, the effects of the vaccine are so pronounced that even a moderate reduction keeps it above the level they think will provide protection, although it might reduce effectiveness somewhat. Given that we're starting at, like, 95%, that's still decent. BUT, since both vaccines trialed before the variants emerged, we don't know at all how things are affected in a real-world setting.
- Johnson & Johnson vaccine (adenovirus vectored) showed, if I'm remembering right, 70-something percent effectiveness preventing infection vs. wild-type virus, but only 56% vs. the SA variant.
- I don't remember the numbers, but the deal was more or less the same with Novavax.
- AstraZeneca's vaccine's effectiveness was so dinged by the SA variant that SA halted its rollout entirely to evaluate further.
So. UK variant spreads like crazy, but doesn't really escape the vaccines we have now. SA variant does, to some degree, although how much has yet to be determined. What a lot of scientists are predicting is another surge based on the spread of these more-infectious variants some time in the next 2-3 months, as they become the dominant versions of the virus in places like the US and the vaccination program takes time ramping up.
For what it's worth, all the vaccine makers who've at least hit phase 3 trials are currently working on boosters vs. the variants of concern, but it might mean everybody getting another shot in the fall, which sounds like a logistical nightmare given that we won't likely even be done totally vaccinating the general population by fall.
Then, it depends what metrics are going to be used to determine how we're doing. Even the "disappointing" vaccines like J&J and Novavax have, so far, proven almost entirely effective at cutting out mortality and dramatically reducing hospitalizations. There's a lot of talk right now about herd immunity and cutting the infection rate to zero, but if we get to a point at which the virus is still going around but mortality and hospitalization aren't a factor for anyone who's been fully vaccinated, is that something that'll allow us to return to normal? Or, do we keep waiting and try to drive even mild/moderate infections down to a point of near-non-existence to protect those who either can't be vaccinated, don't respond as well, or are otherwise vulnerable?
Ultimately, yes, I think the variants emerging has led most to conclude that pandemic life is going to go on longer than it would have if they hadn't done so. Which sucks. We're still on the road to things being better...the road is just somewhat longer, now.

I can see this working for sports games but...not for concerts.
Even if the vaccine doesn't entirely block the new strains, it does significantly diminish how sick one might get if it doesn't, supposedly. I am optimistic (also very happy I get my first shot this week). Anyway, the Garden just announced a NEW show for October 1 (Maluma) so hope springs a bit more.

this is the first time I'm hearing of Maluma, and he's got a massive arena tour in the fall. Wow, I'm out of the loop

Sooo, starting April 2nd, venues can open at 33% capacity, up to 100 people indoor and 200 people outdoor...and that expands to 150 and 500 with testing.
What do you guys think? If I’m vaccinated (2nd shot in 3 weeks), I might be up for an outdoor show this summer if they’re requiring proof of a negative test...but man, is taking that first plunge going to be weird AF.

You can do it. Especially outdoors. Wish I could come up there, I'd join you. With a mask and socially distanced, of course.

I guess we can start going to places like Mercury Lounge if people are willing to play there but...I don't see how this whole mask policing thing will work especially if they are planning on selling booze in these venues.
I get my second shot in two weeks so I'm down if there's something I want to see. A negative test will probably be required. Since I'm moving at the end of this month (walking distance to Barclays for the win) and Florida at the end of April it'll likely be May before I can entertain seeing anything anyway. Makes me even more hopeful for some Summerstage and Celebrate Brooklyn shows this summer and that shows I have tix for in August and September will happen, even optimistic about Rage at MSG.

Smaller venues wasting no time...Jesse Malin at Bowery Electric on April 2 & 3 and City Winery with shows with various people starting then too.
It's going to be really interesting seeing how people fall out in terms of safety protocols. I know the guy who runs City Winery has said they plan on some sort of vaccine/negative test result passport situation, and I'm guessing some of the bigger venues in the city will do that, too...but something on the level of Bowery Electric?

Yeah, it will. I dunno - I think best that Bowery Electric and venues like that can do is just enforce the capacity restrictions, mark off standing pods on the floor and have a mask mandate (although I'm not sure how they would handle drinking in that scenario).
Seems like Brooklyn Steel is booking shows again, have gotten emails for on sales for two bands there in November, so they should have a full schedule by then at the latest. Also excited that Shakespeare in the Park will happen this summer, makes me hopeful for some Celebrate Brooklyn and Summerstage shows.
