I'm from Waukesha and I will be going down with two other people, but I don't know about the camping situation because you have the space next to your car for camping so would you just set up somewhere close?
I know my group is staying a hotel somewhere, but most details are still to be determined. All I know is who's going so far and that I'm probably leaving from Madison.
It's about time I stumbled across my fellow Inforoo Wisconsinites.
I'm always down for having a few when my schedule allows it. Problem is, that doesn't happen often enough on my schedule.
We should definitely figure something out sometime, though. I probably won't put much thought into Bonnaroo logistics until the third week of May when graduation is behind me.
Anyway, as for hotel rooms... Last year, my gang got pre-Roo rooms in Monteagle and we're talking about doing the same.
I've found that entering from the east usually results in a better camping situation. I've entered from the west three out of my five years going, and every time we've wound up way the hell out by Pete Rose Way.
Here's a map (funny how Google directed me elsewhere on Inforoo) of the site. The three years I've entered from the west, I wound up camped in lot #79 twice and #80 once. Whereas the years I've entered from the east, I was camped in #s 5 and 12, respectively.
It's not going to ruin your weekend, but it will give you a bit more walking to do.
Eew. Don't go the Chicago-Indiana route if you can avoid it. It's not that much of a time difference, and there are plenty of toll costs along the way.
I usually leave Madison on 90/39. Then exit onto 39 - you only have to pay one toll along the way. Then drive south pretty much through the entirety of Illinois. Lots of flatland, no Chicago traffic, less police along the route.

You can also take advantage of the situation... go past Manchester south to an early morning visit to Mecca (Lynchberg, TN). Catch the early morning tour of the distillery, and then come back from the south and you should be golden!
Hey kdogg- We are interested in your route too. I do hate driving straight thru Il but would consider it if you think it'll give us a better spot at roo. We've been way out there 3 years in a row. Three different corners too! We've tried different times and exits but nope... still a friggin hike. We just decided it is all just luck and our Irish-ness is failing us!

1. 90 until around Rockford 2. 39 to Bloomington 3. 74 to Champaign-Urbana 4. 57 until you hit 24 5. 24 takes you to Bonnaroo
But that doesn't take into account where you'll enter Bonnaroo. I find that if you want a better campsite location, you need to overshoot Bonnaroo and then approach from the east. Last year, we had our hotel in Monteagle and wound up with the best spot I've had in my five Bonnaroos. You have to get down there early, though... Early enough to drive past Bonnaroo before the patrols force you to get into line. If you can't do that, you can't arrive from the east.
Last year, one of the cars in our caravan broke down right around Nashville. He got it fixed right away in the morning, but by then it was too late. They wouldn't let him drive past the entrance from the west (he tried lying and said he wasn't going to Bonnaroo, but they still made him get in line) and join us to enter from the east. We had a prime spot, and he was way the hell out by Pete Rose Way which is nearly as far out as one can get.
Thanks. I guess we could still follow the route we've gone in the past and just try to pass roo like you said. I only say that because I really hate driving staight thru Il. It feels like it will never end!!
I admit Illinois is flat and seemingly endless. But there's a crucifix for a Godzilla-sized Jesus along the way to break up that monotony.
I still stand by the Illinois route.
There's only one toll to pay, at least where I'm coming from. No Chicago traffic. Google maps says it's about 40 minutes shorter. Less enforcement along those roads. No foul Indiana smells to deal with.
Whichever way you take, the paths overlap starting with 24 around Nashville so it's going to the same place.
Yeah, we'd have to go out of our way to avoid Chicago and the tolls. I am not sure I could convince my hubby to add extra driving time to get on I-90. We are an hour straight north of Chicago.
Hey and don't forget about the lovely city of Metropolis,Il (no offense to any locals). Gotta love a city with all that Superman stuff!! I thought I was in an episode of candid camera or something when we stopped there a few years ago. There were men in full Superman gear on a Thursday night at Pizza Hut. We found out later it was a fest or something.
Whatever way we take, I am crossing my fingers for a shorter walk this year. Three years of long hikes is enough!
