What do Florence fans think of Alice Merton? Not really my thing but I still thought it was pretty good.
I honestly think it sounds way closer to other, more bluesier alternative singer/songwriters (e.g. ZZ Ward, Elle King) than Florence + the Machine, which is a bit of a shame because I think it could use some of the more ethereal qualities that make Florence's music more interesting.
Enjoy Florence substantially. I've only heard "Roots" by Alice Merton afaik but if that's her lead single I have no desire to listen to her again. That song actually really irritates me.
Also this Toro y Moi album is very, very good.
Edit: Toro y Moi were just in Philly two months ago...why do artists go on tour before the album release? I woulda enjoyed that show.

It's a little samey throughout, but I'm also enjoying this record by The Twilight Sad a good deal. Kinda like if the Frightened Rabbit guy was singing Cure songs

The Twilight Sad is a great live band as well. And they opened for The Cure couple years ago for their US tour.

Only about halfway through, but the Phoebe Bridgers/Conor Oberst album is a pleasant listen with some good songwriting. Fans of either would probably enjoy (like Phoebe, can take or leave Bright Eyes myself)
The Weezer album, however, was not a pleasant listen. Credit where it's due though, they keep finding new and different ways to be disappointing!
Assume Form is miles ahead of The Colour in Anything, imo.
Some of my favorite James Blake songs in years, particularly Mile High and Barefoot in the Park.
I love both albums tremendously but the biggest flaw in The Colour in Anything to me was it's length. There were quite a lot of songs that should've been cut or only included in some type of bonus album format. If you edit out like 7 songs, it would've been such an achievement.
As far as my favorite songs of Assume Form, "Don't Miss It" remains my favorite after all these months of it being out. Love that track. Also love "Assume Form", "Into the Red", "Barefoot in the Park", "I'll Come Too", and "Lullabye for My Insomniac". Basically the whole album.

I agree with your Colour assessment. It took me a long while to enjoy the back half of the album because it was such a slog to get there. There's something to be said for being a good editor, which that album somehow didn't have.
Still, I'm glad he's growing as an artist. After listening to Assume Form, Sharon Van Etten, Toro Y Moi and the new Conor Oberst/Phoebe Bridgers, seems like James Blake is a slamdunk for my pick of the month.

That you wouldn't feel comfortable posting the album art. I assume that's in reference to the nude girl?
Haha yeah obviously. When I'm listening to this on the Spotify web player at work I have to look over my shoulder, quickly press play, then minimize the screen. I'm terrified someone will walk by my desk and see the album cover and call HR. I'm also one of those people who is heavily against posting nude or semi-nude pictures of your children on social media.

But there's like... so much nude art of children that's way more revealing than that album cover.
I mean Nirvana's Nevermind literally shows a baby's penis

I sorta agree with you, but there is unfortunately a difference between a baby's penis and what looks to be a nude five year old girl.
Even though I very much enjoy Assume Form, I don't think it comes close to Colour or even Overgrown. The songwriting is much more straightforward and there's less vocal manipulation, which I think is one of the more interesting parts of his music. And while there are periods of silence, he plays with silence/atmosphere less than he does on his other albums. Some of the songs on AF remind me of Disney songs tbh. I agree that Colour was way too long but so many songs on there are just next level. Assume Form is a good album but doesn't blow me away like his other work does. Maybe my expectations were too high; maybe I just like him better when he's moodier and ethereal as opposed to bright and poppier, but now that my hype has died down, I'm a little disappointed.
