I'm surprised at the reception of the Gov Ball lineup. I legitimately like the majority of artists listed and I think it has the least amount of shitty filler acts. Being the only US festival that got Jorja Smith and Charli XCX is also pretty cool.

Yeah my biggest issue is the absurd percentage of the lineup I’ve seen already. And for the most part those are artists I do very much so like
I didn’t rank them because it’s too early in the year to know. Coachella or Bonnaroo would be top for me at this point. Bonnaroo has a lot of blah shit, tons of it. But there is some really good shit for me on that lineup which inspired me to buy a ticket. I thought Bottlerock was a pretty big step down from 2 years ago and Boston Calling, which usually would be top few for me in a given year isn’t that good I don’t think. What I find funny is outside of krisp, no one has Hangout anywhere but at the bottom. They don’t care what music lovers think anymore because it’s about beach vibez and pop now.

And Firefly is always penultimate. Those two fests have shot themselves in the foot for 3 years running now. You can definitely see it in the attendance, Firefly last year was dead (at least on Sunday, which had the best daily lineup by far). But why learn from mistakes, right? I honestly think in 10 years (or maybe sooner) from now there will only be the OG festivals like Coachella, Bonnaroo, Lolla, NOLA Jazz and Newport (and a few others of their ilk) still around. Which is fine by me as long as lineups won't be homogenized and milquetoast.

Im trying to get back to roo this year, the lineup is the best in a few years and I just don't think I'm ever going to go back if not for now. But holy fuck does the 3 sets of phish and post Malone annoy me. I think Shakey knees is my #1 right now

Acceptable Tier Coachella > Boston Calling > Shaky Knees
Meh Tier Gov Ball> Bonnaroo > Big Ears > High Water
Bottom Tier: Firefly >>>>>> Hangout
personally pulling for Pitchfork because if all else fails i’ll be returning to that the third year in a row, either that or the Merge Records anniversary fest which is actually near me

Ditto to every bit of this, except maybe Shaky Knees - looks good but I'm not in love with it (or any lineup out now, for that matter), and the drive would be pushing my limits.
This should be my year to go back to Roo, and I might. The lineup looks better than the last two years, for sure. The issues are that my OG crew have spread out and probably can't be talked into going, my local folks and the couple of Roo'ers at work don't seem too interested, and it's the week after Nelsonville, which is problematic. I can probably make it work and really want to do a big fest this year, but it wouldn't be the best choice right now.
Bonnaroo Shaky Knees Governors Balls Bottlerock Boston Calling III Points Coachella (guys it sucks, they share Tame with a small fest like Shaky, the only good thing is Aphex)

How is Shaky Knees so high if you just criticized Coachella for having Tame?
And having Bonaroo at the top is pretty funny. Phish, Gambino, Post, Odesza, Phish again with 2 sets, The Lumineers are their top 6

Tame is an amazing get for Shaky but a weak headliner to me when they could’ve been Preheadliner at Coach. Especially when looking at price, $1000 or free with a simple small tattoo, yes two totally different size fests, but for cost and amount of artists to see, makes Shaky a better lineup. I love Ariana, I think she’s beautiful and a sweetheart, I don’t like her music but I don’t hate it either, she’s a great singer. And I think it’s a good booking don’t get me wrong but when talking about the same festival that booked Prince as a replacement compared to her it’s just laughable this year. This is the fest that had Roger Waters, AC/DC, Guns & Roses, Tool, Rage, Oasis, Radiohead, The Cure, NIN, Coldplay, Depeche Mode, Paul McCartney, Muse, Blur & Gorillaz, OutKast, Drake, Dre & Snoop, Daft Punk, Massive Attack, The Chemical Bros a million times. You think more people would realize how bad Childish - Tame - Ariana really is. I don’t like Beyoncé, and I’m fine with Lady Gaga, but both are way more well deserving and bigger gets than her. With Roo at least we got Childish like Coachella did, we got Post who is huge right now love him or not, and the most unique booking that no other fest will have this year or probably ever again being three sets of Phish. Especially when you realize Phish is on the same day as Childish, it’s having two headliners instead of one Childish like Coachella has and then two more sets to close out the fest. Tame isn’t a unique booking and Shaky already announced them first. So for someone who looks forward to seeing a legend like any name I listed above, getting Ariana just isn’t good enough and Kanye wouldn’t have been any better. Which she isn’t even gonna be a one of a kind booking if the rumors are true and Lolla did book Ariana as well and Tame too. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
